About this audiobook
Olivia Kiernan's tautly written debut novel immerses listeners in a chilling murder case . . . and the tantalizing, enigmatic victim at the center of it all.
In a quiet Dublin suburb, within her pristine home, Eleanor Costello is found hanging from a rope.
Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan would be more than happy to declare it a suicide. Four months ago, Frankie's pursuit of a killer almost ended her life and she isn't keen on investigating another homicide. But the autopsy reveals poorly healed bones and old stab wounds, absent from medical records. A new cut is carefully, deliberately covered in paint. Eleanor's husband, Peter, is unreachable, missing. A search of the couple's home reveals only two signs of personality: a much-loved book on art and a laptop with access to the Dark Web.
With the suspect pool growing, the carefully crafted profile of the victim crumbling with each new lead, and mysterious calls to Frankie's phone implying that the killer is closer than anyone would like, all Frankie knows is that Eleanor guarded her secrets as closely in life as she does in death.
As the investigation grows more challenging, Frankie can't help but feel that something doesn't fit. And when another woman is found murdered, the same paint on her corpse, Frankie knows that unraveling Eleanor's life is the only way to find the murderer before he claims another victim . . . or finishes the fate Frankie only just managed to escape.
Engrossing, complex, and atmospheric, Olivia Kiernan's debut novel will leave listeners breathless.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A new series for me!Eleanor Costello is found hanging, and Det. Chief Sup. Frankie Sheehan realizes that it isn't a suicide. Having not fully recovered from a previous case, pursuing a killer, she is hesitant but realizes that something is not quite right. Finding a blue paint clue, and an art book and Chagall painting, Frankie is intrigued. Additionally, a laptop that accessed the Dark Web is found. Eleanor's husband is missing, and is the main suspect. But, as Frankie and her team investigate, she recognizes that there is a sinister secret that Eleanor was keeping. This is a very good debut novel, and I look forward to continuing the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I read this on a flight in one sitting and it did hold my interest, but I don't think I would seek out any more by this author. Frankie is returning to work as a senior detective in Dublin (I'm not familiar with ranks in the Irish force) after being attacked, and is investigating a murder while preparing to give evidence at the trial of her attacker. It felt a bit as though I had come in at book two, although gradually the story of her attack was recounted and it was tied in with the main storyline. My main issue with this book was the lack of characterization. There was a bit of banter between Frankie and Baz, another detective, but apart from that I learnt nothing about Frankie and what made her tick (actually, I tell a lie, there were lots of paragraphs devoted to her bonsai tree). The unpleasant motivation behind the murders (for there were subsequent deaths) was again explained, but in a detached manner. When you know the ending the prologue makes a lot more sense. Finally Frankie did make some odd decisions, for example in the questioning (or not) of Tom and in her risky actions at the end.Not bad, but nothing special either.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An excellent start to a new series. The thing I really appreciated about this was there weren't any wildly crazy technologies or futuristic forensics used to solve the mystery. It was all down to really good detective work that, as a reader, you followed right along with. Of course there were fingerprints and DNA and such, but the essence of the solving was pure detective reasoning and leg work. The story drew me in immediately and kept me fully engaged throughout. I look forward to the next in the series. Many thanks to the publisher for providing with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a solid debut crime thriller and looks to be a good start to a new series. It is definitely dark and the crime scenes are graphic at times. I did think the back story of Detective Frankie Sheehan and the Tracy Ward case should have been the first book in the series rather than interspersed throughout this book. The book kept me guessing - I really didn't know who did it until the reveal at the end. I received an ARC of this book from FirstToRead.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Too Close to Breathe is a book I was eager to read and I wasn't disappointed by it. It did take me a little getting into and I think it's because it felt a bit like I had missed something about Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan's past. It obviously was something major and was shaping the current story. However, it was drip-fed to me as I read on and I realised that it was actually a really good way of giving me information, not only about Frankie, but about the case she was working on before. Before what, you may ask. Well, before Dr Eleanor Costello is found hanged at her home and before Frankie starts to wonder if it really is suicide or whether there's more to it.This is a very well written story, a cat and mouse game between Frankie and a killer. She's one of those people who throw themselves into every situation with little regard for her own safety, which makes for a very exciting read, even if I did want to shout at my book and tell her not to do something so rash. She's a very intuitive cop, working on her instincts and what they tell her about a person or a case. Whilst her team support her well, she seems to me to be someone who works better alone as she's a bit of a maverick, and apart from fellow police officer, Baz, and her boss, Clancy, the rest of the team are more background characters. I guess they could be brought more to the forefront of future novels, as I believe this is the first in a series to feature DCS Frankie Sheehan.Too Close to Breathe is quite a thrilling read, fast-paced in some ways and in others more of a slow reveal. One of the things I particularly enjoyed was the dark web element to the story, something which is current and relevant. In fact, dark is a word I would use to describe the whole book. It's very edgy, well-plotted and an excellent debut crime thriller.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow, where do I start! What a debut, I loved this novel! The Irish setting was a big bonus but the true winner for me was DCS Frankie Sheehan. She's just been cleared to return to duty after a brutal attack. Her first case seems to be an apparent suicide but things are looking a bit off after the autopsy. The more they learn about the seemingly perfect Dr. Eleanor Costello who at first was thought to have hung herself the more twisted the trail gets to finding her killer. The team has several false starts, they are following leads that take them to more puzzles. I liked Frankie because she's a tough no-nonsense leader who isn't afraid to go it alone if she needs to find out just what is driving this case. Her superiors are concerned about her because she has her own trial coming up where she'll have to face her own attacker. Is she getting in over her head, things are spinning out of control with this case. This is a real whodunnit and it was a hard one to put down, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery. I'm looking forward to next installment in this series. I would like to thank First-to-Read for providing me with an e-galley of this book in exchange for my honest review.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5WOW... This is a debut book by Olivia Kiernan. DCS Frankie Sheehan has a lot going on. She is working on solving a string of crimes while also dealing with a crime that happen against her. There is no doubt the crime against her left her with many issues to deal with but working is helping her get on with her life. I like that a Frankie didn't let her issues keep her out of living life. I actually think that because of what happen it helps her keep prospective of the crimes, sees things other have or could have missed, and work harder to solve a crime that others have written off as unsolvable. I was enthralled from the beginning and by the halfway point of the story I thought I had the case solved. Yea, well I wasn't even close. I love being wrong while reading. The hints led me one way while I should have gone the other way. While there were some hints that I knew were taking me the wrong direction since what fun would it be to give it all away at the beginning of the story I couldn't help but follow them. I am a synopsis and cover person. For me to want to read a book the cover has to grab my attention. The cover of Too Close to Breathe did just that. I look at the cover and saw a mystery, a thriller, and a dark story that I couldn't wait to pick up. Then when I read the synopsis and Olivia Kiernan was compared to such amazing authors as Tana French and Gillian Flynn I knew that I would not be able to pass on this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Irish are fantastic storytellers, and Olivia Kiernan proves that she is going to be one of the best. Too Close to Breathe is the first in the Frankie Sheehan mystery/thriller series and debut novel for her. Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan who four months earlier, was almost killed in an attack trying to apprehend a killer. When she is called to a Dublin suburb to investigate the supposed suicide of a woman, Eleanor Costello, who is found hanging from a rope in her home. At first, it seems cut and dried and the case can be closed but after the autopsy report shows old wounds and broken bones Frankie realizes that this is not a suicide. Of course, the first suspect is the husband.Another woman's body is discovered with the same MO as Eleanor's. Then Paul Costello is found and that really throws the investigation into a tailspin. Frankie is challenged with all she has to try to figure out what really happened. Frankie is a strong but flawed, a bit rough around the edges, woman who tries to take charge of her demons and keep an open mind in her investigation. With the help of her team, Frankie pulls out all the stops in this case.Too Close to Breathe is a taut thriller that will have fans of Tanya French and Gillian Flynn excited to read this new author. I really loved the story and definitely want to read more from Olivia Kiernan.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. Yet, I was struggling to find that bond with the main character as well as any of the other characters. This makes it very hard to become invested in the book as a whole package when parts of the story are lacking. As this saddens me because undereneath the layers I feel like there was something here. It just did not resonate from the pages to my brain. There was not enough interest to retain what I was reading most of the time. There were a few times when my interest would start to peak. Overall, I ws not impressed by this book.
