About this audiobook
#1 New York Times and Amazon Charts bestselling author Lee Goldberg hits the ground running in a breakneck thriller where truth and fiction collide for the unluckiest writer alive.
When a passenger jet crashes onto the beaches of Waikiki, bestselling thriller writer Ian Ludlow knows the horrific tragedy wasn’t an accident.
Years before, the CIA enlisted Ian to dream up terrorism scenarios to prepare the government for nightmares they couldn’t imagine. Now one of those schemes has come true, and Ian is the only person alive who knows how it was done…and who is behind the plot. That makes him too dangerous to live.
Ian goes on the run, sweeping up an innocent bystander in his plight—Margo French, a dog walker and aspiring singer. They are pursued by assassins and an all-seeing global-intelligence network that won’t stop until Ian and Margo are dead. Ian has written thrillers like this before, but this time he doesn’t know how it’s going to end—or if he will be alive to find out.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5What would you do if something you did as a lark, for example participating in a think tank session for the CIA where you dreamed up potential terrorism scenarios, strangely seemed to be unfolding around you?! In True Fiction, Author Ian Ludlow is faced with this implausible reality after events start taking place that he knows, for a fact, were his ideas spun from his own imagining. This was not something that would sit very well for anyone and it puts Ian in the position of trying to figure out how to stay alive after it becomes apparent that someone clearly wants him eliminated because he knows too much. It was fun to read a story about an author who’s put in a situation that mirror’s the fiction that had made him a best-selling author. I am sure that idea seemed very appealing to Ian until he was facing that reality. True Fiction is a theatrical conspiracy theory wrapped up in a tongue-in-cheek espionage thriller that is not meant to be taken too seriously. In order to enjoy it you will have to suspend plausibility and take it for the satire that it was intended to be. For me, there were many moments of humor as well as other moments of feeling an eye roll or two coming on. I am curious though to see where the Ian Ludlow Thrillers series goes and if it continues in this humorous fashion.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5“True Fiction” was my introduction to author Lee Goldberg. A pleasant mixture of action/adventure and tongue in cheek humor. Our hero, a writer, finds one of his concepts all too true. He goes on the run with a dog walker/author wrangler and fights against injustice by the CIA,..or is it? It's an original plot that might be credible?
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5So bad it's good? It is almost a parody of spy thrillers, but Goldberg never entirely commits to make it a good one. The humor doesn't take off, and the characters never fill out. Thriller pablum.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5When a passenger plane crashes into a Waikiki hotel, it’s déjà vu for writer Ian Ludlum. It’s the scenario he put forth to other writers asked by the CIA to dream up terrorism schemes to better prepare the government to deal with nightmares they couldn’t even begin to imagine. When he learns that the three other writers from that long-ago Maine weekend are all dead, Ian realizes he’s become a target since he’s the only one who knows how the perpetrators caused the crash. Soon thereafter, there’s an attempt on his life. As he goes on the run with Margo, the author escort hired by his publisher to drive him around Seattle, he knows the assassins won’t stop until he’s dead. It’s just like the thrillers he writes . . . only this time he has no idea how the story will end.The conspiracy-theory narrative spins out in highly inventive plot with whip-smart execution and a multitude of laugh out loud moments. Self-deprecating Ian Ludlow is the perfect foil for the over-the-top villain and the crazy [like a fox] friend. Readers will find this delightful romp to be completely unputdownable. Highly recommended.
