About this audiobook
The mesmerising new novel from the winner of the Costa Short Story Award, following her debut novel Himself.
Maud Drennan - underpaid carer and unintentional psychic - is the latest in a long line of dogsbodies for the ancient, belligerent Cathal Flood. Yet despite her best efforts, Maud is drawn into the mysteries concealed in his filthy, once-grand home. She realises that Cathal, and the junk-filled rooms, are opening up to her. With only her landlady and a troop of sarcastic ghostly saints to help, Maud must uncover what lies beneath Cathal's decades-old hostility, and the strange activities of the house itself.

“Mixes up murder and mayhem with the eerily supernatural. Utterly unputdownable.” SUNDAY EXPRESS

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An exciting story with lovely narration. I'm a sucker for an Irish accent.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is different to the books I'm normally attracted to. For me it starts slow but the writing was so incredibly good I had to stick with it and so happy that I did. It's one of my favorite books this year.
Maude is a carer for surly horder Cathal Flood who lives in a a sprawling mansion in London. She also sees saints and interacts with them. There are mysteries surrounding the death of Cathal's wife and disappearance of his daughter. Maude is determined and obsessed with finding out what happened to them.
Rich characters and I especially liked Maude's landlady Renata. I loved this extraordinary bonkers of a book. Excellent narration - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lovely, atmospheric, mysterious and captivating book. The descriptions are so vivid I could picture the old house, the old man and Renata perfectly! The ending felt a bit abrupt, but I loved it nonetheless.
The reader did a fantastic job and I will seek other books read by her. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ms Kidd has a wonderful way with words, creating pictures wild and believable. The reader with her Irish accent is perfect for this Irish story
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The last time a book made me feel this way was when I was a little girl discovering the works of Roald Dahl.
An enchanting read, I laughed and cried, fell in love with the characters and yet couldn’t warm to those who indeed turned out to be bad!
It is just like a Roald Dahl for adults!
Brilliantly written and beautifully narrated! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. The constant interaction with the saints a little irritating. Beautifully narrated.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book, excellect narrator who really made the story come alive.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Did not want this book to end. Amazing!! Movie material
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was an okay book. It had its mystery and mystical parts. But all in one I don't know if all this fit together. At times the action concentrated on Maud and her search, some other time it was just filler information.
