- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a very interesting series by Tracy Peterson About three young women who set off to San Francisco. One is in search of her long-lost brother, Another is in search of love, while the third is running away from love. Will each of these ladies find what they are looking for or find more than they are looking for? A good series set in turn of the century California with a backdrop of the great San Francisco earthquake and its devastation.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5“In Places Hidden”, is the First book of Tracie Peterson's new Golden Gate Series. This series is set in San Francisco in the early 1900's. I have read many of Ms. Peterson's books and I enjoy her writing. She takes a Christian historical fiction novel and brings the story and people to life. I like the way throughout all of her books there is a thread of faith woven into the story. I found the mystery and the suspense in this story enjoyable and interesting. I had a little difficulty getting into some of the characters. Camri Coulter is going by train from Chicago to San Francisco to find her lost brother. She befriends two young ladies on the train and invites them to come stay with her at her brothers house. Judith has just lost her parents and is looking for a lost aunt she never knew about. Kenzie was left at the alter and is nursing a broken heart. Maybe because they are not a lead in the story and we didn't learn that much about them. I just had a hard time following their characters. On the other hand,my favorite character was handsome Irish contractor, Patrick Murdock and his sister Ophelia. Patrick is the type of leading man every novel needs. He is strong, buffed, gorgeous and very kind. What is not to like about him, plus he has the sweetest Irish brogue. I can not wait to start on “In Dreams Forgotten”, book two of this series. I was blessed to receive a copy of this book from Bethany House publishers.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Title: In Places Hidden (Golden Gate Secrets #1)Author: Tracie PetersonPages: 316Year: 2018Publisher: Bethany HouseMy rating is 4 out of 5 stars.Camrianne Coulter has arrived in San Francisco to find her brother, Caleb, who has been missing for three months. He is a lawyer for a firm and has successfully defended a poor Irish man charged with murder. Camri’s parents have been so worried about their son that their health has suffered and they both have been confined to their beds. Camri discovers that there are very few clues as to what happened to her brother. She works at a chocolate factory to support her brother’s household while questioning those who last saw her brother. She also meets the Irish man who was found innocent of murder. He also is searching for her brother as they both were trying to get proof of corrupt business practices, graft and other criminal activities of a wealthy and ruthless man. Then, just as they were getting close to bringing their proof to light, Caleb disappears.Patrick Murdock used to work with his father in the family’s construction business. His father was approached by some shifty characters to accept some money in exchange for using inferior materials. His father refused and soon after was found dead. Patrick knows his father was killed and didn’t have an accident. He also knows who is responsible, but he must have proof. He agrees to work with his friend and lawyer, Caleb, to gather evidence. Then, Caleb vanishes without a trace. Patrick meets Caleb’s sister and agrees to help her try to discover what happened to her brother. As they keep digging for the truth, they become more of a target for danger. The beginning was slow, but it got more interesting. I liked the setting as well as the three women agreeing to work together to help each other solve their problems. They pooled their resources to support one another. I also admired Camri’s ability to look at herself and see how pride and arrogance had been a part of her life without her realizing it. She was able to admit this and apologize to those she offended. She also had God as her center. Patrick had anger toward God due to his circumstances and all that he had lost. He had distanced himself from God. He got to a low point and realized he needed God to be back as the focus of his life and not his anger. Good life lessons for all!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In Places Hidden by Tracie Peterson is the first book in the Golden Gate series. The story takes place in 1905, in the booming city of San Francisco. Camri Coulter, with the help of Patrick Murdock, is searching for her brother. What she discovers is political corruption running rampant. Although there is danger in the search for Caleb, it is not too much of a concern to anyone, or so it seemed to me. The story was a very slow start for me. Nothing really happened until over half-way through the book. Camri was supposed to be looking for her missing brother but to me she didn’t do too much “looking”. Still, the storyline was interesting and entertaining. I enjoyed the wee bit of Irish dialogue that was inserted throughout. Overall, I would recommend this book if you like a sweet romance with just a touch of danger.I received this book from Bethany House publisher’s in exchange for my honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In Places Hidden by Tracie Peterson is the first novel in the Golden Gate Secrets series. Camriann “Camri” Coulter has journeyed to San Francisco in late November of 1905 to locate her missing brother, Caleb. On the journey she meets Judith Gladstone and Kenzie Gifford. Each woman has their own quest that has brought them to San Francisco. The three women decide to pool their resources and help one other. They move into Caleb’s house and Kenzie helps them obtain jobs at her cousin’s candy factory. Caleb has been missing for over three months. Camri begins her search by speaking with Caleb’s boss, Mr. Henry Ambrewster. It seems Caleb took Patrick Murdock, a local contractor being tried for murder, as a client and got a not guilty verdict which angered some bigwigs in the city. What lengths would these high-powered individuals go to silence Caleb? Camri teams up with Patrick to discover her brother’s whereabouts and uncover the corrupt people responsible. In Places Hidden is well-written and it has some interesting characters. Kenzie’s candy maker cousin, George Lake is a quirky individual with exacting standards (he is very twitchy). Camri is an intelligent woman who believes in education and suffrage (she likes to pontificate on the value of education especially). I was happy to see her alter some of her opinions and behavior by the end of the book. I had a little trouble getting into the story, but once I did, I was curious to see how matters would play out. I did feel we were given too much backstory on each of the ladies. Since each woman (Judith, Camri and Kenzie) will have their own book, we did not need so much detail on Judith and Kenzie in this installment. It made for a tedious beginning. The Christian elements are strong throughout the book especially having faith in God to get a person through the troublesome times in life. I felt the romance between Camri and Patrick proceeded at a little too quickly. Since In Places Hidden is part of a series, I felt the author could have let their romance progress at a slower speed (which would have been in keeping with the time period). I will be curious to see how Judith and Kenzie’s stories unfold. In Places Hidden is a light, historical romance with touch of intrigue that will appeal to Tracie Peterson’s fans.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This read had me mesmerized, and quickly page-turning, and I had to have answers. Now I’m looking for the next book in this series, and hope those who are so evil get there just due. What a wild, sinful, and immoral city San Francisco was, and although this is a fictional book, it does have a lot of historical fact. Can you image back in the early 1900’s receiving, or not hearing from your brother who is about two thousand miles away, and not knowing where he is, or if he is even alive. This is why Camri Coulter is in the West, and she meets two women while traveling there, in rather dire circumstances, and takes them under her wing and offers them shelter. So many life lessons here, and you will be quickly caught up in this story, with evil so prominent you will have to wonder who is going to come out alive at the end. So many people hurt, and why? Greed.Don’t miss this one!I received this book through the Publisher Bethany House reviewer program, and was not required to give a positive review.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have always enjoyed reading Tracie Peterson's books. When I was given a chance for an early reader copy I was so excited. I immediately asked and received a copy of the book through Bethany House publishing. So, now that you know I was given the book, let me assure you that the review is my own opinion and not required. I loved this book from the very beginning. You are immediately introduced to three single women getting off a train in San Francisco in the early 1900s. All three have a reason for going to San Francisco and agree to team up to accomplish their goals. The first goal tackled is about Camri and her missing brother. The other two women's problems are mentioned but will be tackled in the coming books in the series. Camri's missing brother is the center of this book that is full of mystery and intrigue, political corruption and murder. I was immediately hooked and it held my attention throughout. It was a book that was easy to read and I didn't lose interest at all. It is a Christian book and that shines throughout. It is not just barely touched, as in some books, but not preachy either. It shows how Camri, already a Christian, grows in her faith. This book is also a romance story but not just romance. In fact, the romance almost seems like an aside to the story. The book also touches on the different classes of people in the early 1900s, the elite and the poor. The criminals and the lawful, and the prejudices of the day. How people in San Francisco looked down on the Irish and Chinese. All of these are addressed in a most interesting way in this book. I highly recommend you read this.
