- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The author is skilled at description and the mystery is a puzzling one, but it drags with too many side-facets. We have relationships! And architecture! And a strong female character! And rogues! And the Great Fire! And social issues! And! And! And! It just ends up feeling like the author isn't much interested in the mystery as much as he's using it to share tidbits of things he finds interesting. The mystery unraveled itself, more or less, and more space was given to how awful Newgate Prison was than to actual detection. For all the time spent with them, and as much as one feels they *should* be interesting, the characters seemed like stock characters: the Good Brother, the Naughty Brother, the Loyal Conflicted Friend, the Overbearing Father, the Freespirited Woman Who Doesn't Need a Man, the Upper Crust Sister. Good people are only good and right and know everything, the bad people are only bad with no redeeming qualities.
