A nice ending to one of my new favorite fantasy series, but it did have some problems.

This had a lot of pacing issues. We start off VERY slow. I had to wait until after the 50% mark before we started working towards a solution to our "big problem". Then once we get going things happen a little too quickly. So there's parts that are really slow and parts that happen too fast. I really think this book and the one before could have been edited and condensed into one book. That would have been a more effective conclusion. There's many unnecessary issues thrown in between these two books that felt like stall tactics. Things happen and then we undo them fairly easily later on. We didn't need it.

The characters are still great but they lost a little bit of their spark in this one. My annoyance for Lucia and Jonas did lessen in this one which was nice. And my LOVE for others only grew. (Seriously, shout-out to Morgan Rhodes for giving us all Magnus Damora and his beautiful character arc!) The characters and the SHIPS are truly the best part of this series. So much fun to read and watch how each individual develops.

I will say I was a little disappointed with the plot. I was hoping for some more twists and dramatics to liven things up. I think she attempted to do this with some of the unnecessary things I mentioned before but they weren't effective. The middle books were like an amazing roller-coaster and this one felt pretty straightforward throughout. Which isn't necessarily bad but not exactly the ride I was hoping for. That felt like a lot of complaining so I want to reiterate that I really did enjoy this book. I just can see how it could have been so much more! I think I have a hard time with finales.

Overall this was a satisfying conclusion, everything wraps up very nicely with a sweetly little "bow". You can think I'm terrible but I wish more people had died in this one. Haha.
And we are left with plenty of room for future installments in the same world if the author so wishes. I have not mentioned it before but the audiobook narrator is fantastic! I am always so impressed with him. There is such a large cast and he does so many unique voices. How he keeps them all straight I'll never know. He’s excellent.

I can’t believe how much I’ve grown to love this series. I almost DNF the first book, Falling Kingdoms. I was so torn and unhappy with it that I am not even sure what compelled me to read on but I will forever be grateful that I stuck through with it until the end.

Closer to 2.5 The story was ok. Underwhelming. I wasn't very impressed with the narration either. It was hard to differ between all the characters, many of the accents used for characters sounded exactly the same. With this story having SO MANY characters it definitely needed multiple people to make a distinction.
