There’s no easy way to die…
Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and the newly promoted DCI Ava Turner, a serial killer has Edinburgh firmly in his grip. The killer is taking his victims in the coldest, most calculating way possible – engineering slow and painful deaths by poison, with his victims entirely unaware of the drugs flooding their bloodstream until it’s too late.
But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows? A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar? Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly impossible task…

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent…. All these books keep you engaged right from the beginning. Brilliant
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I’ve read all the books in the series so far, I love the protagonists and by that I mean the cops, the villains are incredibly credible in spite of that fact that they are so devious it makes my skin crawl and that along with the intelligence and intuitiveness of the police makes for truly compelling stories.
What I also need to mention is that some scenes are so cruel or twisted, I just couldn’t bare to read them.
The books, all of them, are really good though, even if you skip some disturbing parts. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic series of books.
Each novel has its own gritty, brilliant storyline as well as a thread that connects each book and the back story of each character.
I listened to these audiobooks one after another, and was completely enamoured.
Helen Fields, you are wonderful! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thoroughly enjoyed this book!!! Looking forward to the next one
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Oh my, I do love this series of books. Perfect Death was a welcome return to Edinburgh and Police Scotland for me. This time, Helen Fields has shown that she doesn't only write about gory deaths, as the deaths in Perfect Death are slow, torturous, drug-related ones. Don't get me wrong, they're still pretty horrible, but not quite worthy of a slasher movie this time! We're back with newly promoted DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach and their team. They actually have two cases to work. One is the killer poisoning his victims slowly, but the other is one of crime lords and corruption. This dual approach works well as Turner takes one case and Callanach takes another. DS Lively is still on the squad, a dyed in the wool officer who just loves ribbing Callanach for his pretty face. But I saw a different side to him in this book which was nice. Also nice to see return from Perfect Prey, the previous book in the series, was Lance Proudfoot, the journalist. The whole range of characters in these books are perfectly drawn, they work well together and are hugely likeable. This being the third book they have featured in, I'm really starting to care about them and want them to succeed. And I must admit to having a real soft spot for Luc.The book started with me reading slowly, taking it all in, working out what was going on. Then it completely took off and I just could not put it down. It's absolutely thrilling, so exciting and so deliciously twisted. You can read each of the books by Helen Fields as a standalone read but I really do recommend that you read all of the books in order, to appreciate the back story of each character, but also because they are so damn good. I'm over the moon to see that this is not, as I feared, a trilogy, and there are apparently another three books to come at least. Perfect Death is a superbly put together crime thriller. I can't get enough of the characters and I'm already eagerly awaiting the next instalment. The stories that Fields creates are so clever, so unique. She's easily my favourite crime writer around at the moment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Edinburgh homicide detectives DI Luc Callanach & DCI Ava Turner are back. With Ava’s promotion, any chance of a romantic relationship has been scuppered & their friendship has suffered as well. In this outing they will be forced to rely on each other as they come up against a devious & damaged killer.Climbing the ladder with Police Scotland has been a lot harder than Ava thought. Turns out it’s the small things she misses the most. No more casual chat with the crew, no more drinks after work & no more movie nights with Luc. Comradery is hard to come by & to top it off, her boss is a bitch on wheels. Office politics is a blood sport & Ava longs to actually work a case. She’s about to get her wish.It all begins when the naked body of a young woman is found on Arthur’s Seat. With no obvious wounds, it appears to be death by misadventure. But as Luc investigates, small discrepancies begin to add up. Then the head of a charity organization dies under mysterious circumstances. Both families are gutted & the body count is just beginning.Meanwhile Ava is left reeling after her former boss & mentor is found dead of apparent suicide. But he left a few surprises behind that threaten not just his family but the department itself. Ava has no choice but to secretly investigate his death & it’s not long before she’s in well over her head. In alternate chapters we meet a killer whose methods & pathology will make your skin crawl. He’s a busy guy. Tension rises as we watch his meticulous plans take shape & you may find yourself yelling “Run away!” to characters who are unwittingly caught in his web. Because we know more than the police, watching them flounder for clues is excruciating & you truly have no idea who will be the next victim.Running along side the 2 investigations are personal story lines for the 2 MC’s. Luc, in particular, is stunned when his estranged mother turns up to deliver some surprising news. It’s a cracker & no doubt this will unfold further in future books.Familiar faces return to add colour to the story. Journalist Lance Proudfoot, Luc’s secret weapon, is back although by the time the dust settles he may think twice before offering his services again. And DS Lively continues to steal every scene with his blunt & humorous dialogue. My only nitpicky comment is Ava’s tendency to go haring off without back-up into situations that are clearly dangerous. It’s an effective plot device to raise tension but her decisions seem out of sync with a police officer of her standing/experience & you’re left thinking “Wow, that’s a really bad idea”.This is a fast paced & eminently readable story full of characters who have become old friends. The criminal investigations peak simultaneously for an explosive finish & I look forward to ‘Perfect Silence”.
