      This 2nd installment of the Livia Lone series takes off shortly after the end of the first book. Livia, a sex crimes detective in Seattle, is approached by a U.S. operative who asks her to become involved in an investigation in Thailand. Barely able to contain her eagerness, Livia returns to the country of her origin, where her own personal childhood nightmares began. While there, she unexpectedly meets Dox, a former U.S. marine sniper who is more or less investigating the same thing. Realizing the most effective way to bring down the sex crimes lord is to work together, they begin an unlikely partnership in order to bring about justice.I recently read the first book of this series and Livia is one of those female characters you can't help but like. Tough as nails, showing no mercy to her victims. I've not read any of Barry Eisler's other series, but apparently Dox is a well-liked character from his John Rain series. Though Livia and Dox are two characters with completely different personalities, their chemistry works. Whereas book #1 of this series examines Livia's background, this second book reads more like a typical thriller, with lots of action and violence. But it's good and moves along quickly. It's different than book #1, but I enjoyed them both, and am looking forward to moving on to the next one in the series.

      I’ve read many books by Barry Eisler over the years. He was once my favorite author. The main character in most of the books I read was John Rain, an assassin who righted wrongs perpetrated by Japanese crime bosses. One of the characters introduced in that series was Dox, a former Marine sniper who became Rain’s accomplice and closest friend. In ‘The Night Trade’, Dox is the familiar character working with Kanezaki, his CIA contact. Kanezaky was also introduced in the ‘John Rain’ book series and was also a friend of Rains. Dox and Kanezaki are in pursuit of a Taiwanese human trafficker. But Dox soon discovered that another skilled assassin was also pursuing that same criminal. It’s that other assassin, Livia Lone, who is introduced and who is the main character in this book.Lone, a Seattle detective, has a hidden personal agenda. She and her sister came to this country as child sex slaves. Fortunately, she was able to escape and was taken in by a Seattle family. Her sister was not and was ultimately killed. Throughout her education, Lone excelled in criminal law studies and became highly proficient in the martial arts. These early successes led her to be a top rate detective and a highly successful crime case solver. Lone kept to herself the personal goal of punishing all the people involved in her and her sister’s childhood abduction. Reaching for the top of the criminal trafficking pyramid led her to Taiwan where she bumped into Dox who was chasing the same guy. They succeeded in capturing him and Livia administered her justice on the leader of the Taiwanese trafficking syndicate. I think that we’ll be seeing more of Livia Lone in future Barry Eisler books. She is a strong, yet flawed character and this makes her appealing. Her crime-solving and martial arts skills will make interesting vigilante adventures.

      Excellent followup to the first book, Livia Lone. Sure the hero is improbably skilled and gifted but that's standard (think Dirk Pitt) and Livia has worked to achieve her capabilities. They don't just arrive out of a clear sky. There's a new addition to the good guys in this volume but, thankfully, the two of them don't just fall into bed together, but give each other respect and work as a team in a way that makes sense. Bottom line is that the plot, motives, and results are all definitely on the extreme side of adventure/revenge etc but they're unusually understandable for that genre. I enjoyed this and will be looking at his other series.

      As good as any other Eisler book. It brings together Livia and Dox and both characters are pretty much exactly what you expect them to be. The story is not as... distressing... as the first Livia book, but justice is still served and the resolution is satisfactory and believable (well, as much as these black ops activities can be believable anyway).The story does stand alone, but I don't think you would appreciate it nearly as much if you did not read the first book in Livia Lone series. Also... having read about Dox in previous books (Rain series), makes him more relatable here as well.All in all, I would buy this book again, and will continue to read pretty much anything Eisler publishes.

      3.5 starsLivia Lone has a reputation as the best closer in the Seattle P.D.’s sex crimes unit. Other than that, few know much about her or her past. Readers of the eponymously titled first book are all too familiar with the story of her journey from Thailand to America as a trafficked child. Her sister wasn’t so lucky & in this outing, Livia gets a chance to return & exact a little payback on those responsible. Special agent B.D. Little from Homeland Security is hoping Livia will add her expertise to his investigation into a major trafficking ring. Oh, did he mention it was based in Thailand? What are the odds? Livia immediately begins to wonder how much he knows about her & if he just might have a hidden agenda. Either way, it’s too good to pass up & she’s agrees to go on a fact finding mission. Meanwhile in Bangkok, a familiar face from this author’s John Rain series reappears. Dox is an ex-military sniper who uses his talents as a covert “problem solver” for a branch of American intelligence. He comes across as an affable good ol’ boy unless you’re in his crosshairs. He’s currently in a bit of a pickle. After an attempted double-cross, the good news is he’s still breathing. The bad news…a bunch of other guys aren’t. With his cover blown, Dox is pissed & sets out to find the guy behind it all. What he doesn’t know is there’s a cop from Seattle in town who is hunting for the same man. What follows is an action packed & intricate chase story full of corruption, political intrigue & hidden alliances. Half the fun is trying to figure out who is on the same team & why. Even the good guys are capable of acts of extreme violence but when their prey are those who profit from the sale of trafficked children, it’s hard not to cheer them on. The biggest revelation (if you read book #1) is Livia herself. She’s been waiting a long time for revenge but perhaps underestimated how being back in country would affect her. The sights & smells of Thailand bring old memories bubbling to the surface. Her cool, distant veneer develops some major cracks & her emotions lead her to acting impulsively instead of strategically. This took some getting used to as she’s very different from the character I met in the first book. The pace drops in the middle as the MC’s spend time doing the mental gymnastics required to figure out the whole snarly mess before amping up for an explosive finale. In the end, Livia is a changed woman & it will be interesting to see where the author takes this character next.
