In Liar Liar, the latest addition to M.J. Arlidge's DI Helen Grace series, Detective Inspective Helen Grace and her team are hot on the trail of a serial arsonist.

Helen Grace and her team are called in to investigate a chilling case involving multiple fires set simultaneously at different properties around Southampton. Two of the fires destroy local businesses while the third fire destroys a home and claims the lives of some of its inhabitants. Grace's investigation has barely begun when the arsonist strikes again and just like the first fires, two businesses are lost and the third fire in a residential area takes yet another life. Not knowing where the arsonist will strike next, Grace is under extreme pressure to capture the perpetrator before more lives are lost.

Helen continues to be an exceptional investigator who is battling her personal demons at the same time she conducts her investigation. She has an excellent crew working with her but she a little off balance as she works her first case under the watchful eye of her new boss, Detective Superintendent Jonathan Gardam. He seems a little over involved with the investigation but Helen cannot figure out whether this is because he is a micromanager or due to the fact that he does not trust her. She also runs up against an antagonistic fire investigator who turns to ambitious reporter (and Helen's personal nemesis) Emilia Garanita to try to discredit her and her investigation.

The investigation into the fires turns up few clues and many of the investigators are thrust into uncomfortable and unfamiliar situations as they track down leads. Helen's close friend and fellow detective Charlie Brooks is particularly affected as she tries to reconcile her job with her need to be home with her daughter. Helen manages her stress in a rather unorthodox manner and as the pressure builds she makes a decision that could have disastrous repercussions. DS Gardam is rather enigmatic and Helen remains a little uncomfortable with his close scrutiny. Helen's fragile truce with Emilia is no match for the reporter's career aspirations and she continues to use sleazy tactics to get information her articles.

Liar Liar is another gripping addition to the DI Helen Grace series. The story is even paced with chapters that alternate between the different characters' points of view. M.J. Arlidge does an outstanding job keeping the series fresh with another unique crime to solve and the addition of new characters. The perpetrator's identity and motive for the fires is impossible to deduce until the pulse-pounding, action-filled conclusion. The mysterious revelation in the final chapter will leave fans anxiously awaiting the next book in this spectacular series.

Thank you, FirsttoRead for my complimentary review copy.Liar, Liar is the fourth in Arlidge's Helen Grace series. I read Pop Goes the Weasel(#2) and liked it enough to want to read the other books. Although each book functions well enough as a stand-alone, I would have preferred to read them in order to get a better sense of the characters' histories and relationship dynamics.Southampton is going up in flames, literally. There have been six fires in just 48 hours, resulting in four deaths and several injuries, not to mention the emotional fallout. Helen and her team, along with Fire & Rescue, have their hands full dealing with the investigation. Who would do this? Were the sites random or targeted? Law enforcement is under immense public and media pressure.Helen and her team also have to contend with personal and political dilemmas. Gardam, the new boss, is more pro-active and attentive to Helen than she is used to or comfortable with. Also, the "extracurricular activities" Helen engages in to reduce stress are not having their desired effects. Finally, Charlie is torn between her professional duties and family commitments.Arlidge's writing style is very readable. The chapters are short and often end on a suspenseful note. As expected, Helen is the major character and main focus but all characters' perspectives are presented.Overall, I enjoyed this installment. As in Pop Goes the Weasel, the perpetrator was not obvious. Arlidge led me to believe that any number of suspects could be the culprit and they were all viable possibilities. I would definitely want to catch up and continue with the series. I look forward to developments in the current cast of characters and meeting new ones.

It's a lengthy (440 pages!) gritty police procedural about a series of deadly fires started by an arsonist. There's an intriguing story here with a climatic semi-surprise ending. It's an example of the banality of evil.Despite being too long (a frequent complaint of mine), the story moves along briskly. This pace is established and maintained by the author's use of short chapters (one is a page, most are in the 3-5 page range). Tis approach helps to mitigate the extra length. Another thing in this regard is the changing points of view in the narrative -- it's not all told from the investigators' perspective, there's also that of some of the victims and of course that of the perpetrator. This is the first DI Helen Grace novel that I have read and there's obviously some backstory I have missed. This gap however did not adversely affect my reading of this book however; in other words this book can stand on its own. Nevertheless for me, I plan to seeks out others books in the series to get caught up. I like this one enough to read others.

I really love DI Helen Grace. What a great character! She's tough, but her inner demons make her vulnerable as well. And it's not just Helen whom I love in this book. I love the recurring supporting characters as well: DC Charlie Brooks, DS Sanderson, DC McAndrew. They are all well-written characters with depth. The newest character was Detective Superintendent Jonathan Gardam, Helen's boss. I couldn't quite get a handle on him until the very end of the book; I won't say more, to avoid spoilers.Although this is the fourth in the Helen Grace series, you don't need to have read all three previous novels in order to understand or enjoy this one. It helps if you've at least read the 1st book "Eeny Meeny," so as to better understand Helen Grace, but it's not essential. In "Liar Liar," Helen investigates a series of fires. First it's a set of three fires in one night, then, less than 24 hours later, another set of three. What seems at first to be the work of a pyromaniac quickly becomes a murder investigation when two people are found dead inside the burning buildings. And Helen needs to stop the killer before more fires are set and more lives are lost. The mystery behind the fires becomes more intriguing as Helen and her team try to figure out the connection between the victims. The book moves at a fast pace, with very short chapters. It definitely held my attention solidly throughout. The only partially loose end that was not satisfactorily dealt with in my opinion was journalist Emilia Garanita, a thorn in Helen's side. She pursued things doggedly throughout the book, but in the end there was no mention of her; I expected her to pop back into the picture. It wasn't a big loose end - certainly not enough to detract from the 5 stars that I readily give this book. I continue to be impressed by author M.J. Arlidge, who writes female characters realistically and convincingly, despite being male himself.

This has been my favorite Detective Helen Grace series. This really kept me on my toes. We learn a little more in each book about Helen and the rest of the crew. Also this story line is wonderful. Who could be starting all of these fires almost nightly. This is scaring everyone and the police. Will they ever be able to figure out the culprit. I received this book from Firsttoread for a fair and honest opinion. I give this a five out of five stars.

Liar Liar by M.J. Arlidge is the fourth book in A Helen Grace Thriller series. Detective Inspector Helen Grace has a new boss. His name is Detective Superintendent Jonathan Gardam. He is more of a hands on boss. Helen is still trying to figure him out. Helen just finished a tough case when three fires break out in one night. Two are businesses but one is a Victorian home. The fire was set at night while the family was asleep. The eldest son, Luke jumped out of the attic window (the only way he could escape) and suffered severe injuries. Thomas Simms was just arriving home from a business trip and discovered his house in flames. The wife and daughter are still inside. The fireman found them in the shower in the bathroom with the water running (to get oxygen). Who set three fires in one night? Helen Grace and her team are on the case to find the arsonist. Deborah Parks is the arson investigator assigned the case. Deborah discovers that all the fires were set the same way. Then there are three more fires. Again, only one was a home. Can Helen Grace and her team find the culprit before there are more victims? Is there any connection between the victims? The team needs to work quickly and Detective Superintendent Gardam is breathing down their necks (he is keeping a close eye on the investigation and Helen). The tension is getting to Helen, and she makes a mistake that could affect her professional life (she tries to keep her personal and professional lives separate). It is going to be a bleak Christmas unless they catch this firebug!Liar Liar is well-written and easy to read. It has a fast pace that makes it hard to put down. There are some great, unexpected twists in the book (loved them). In order to understand everything about Helen Grace, you really need to read the other books in the series. Each book is based upon the previous novel. Helen is a unique character. Helen is a strong woman, but she is also weak. I liked how we got to know more about DC Charlie Brooks in this book. We got a look at her personal life. How Charlie has to juggle her family (husband and baby daughter) and her work (with its unpredictable hours). I give Liar Liar 5 out of 5 stars. I love M.J. Arlidge’s complex characters and crimes as well as the setting in Southampton, England. I cannot wait for the next book in A Helen Grace Thriller series.I received a complimentary copy of Liar Liar from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.

I cannot get enough of Helen Grace! M.J. Arlidge never fails to entertain me, book after book. This is one author I know I can go to for a series of twists and turns that make up a mystery I can never figure out until that final “a-ha” moment at the very end. Although this isn’t my favorite in the series, this is well worth reading and a great book in itself. Definitely a must read series for the thriller or crime reader. Don’t read any of these as stand alones as they MUST be read in order. I will be waiting, impatiently, for the next book.

Liar Liar is the fourth installment in M. J. Arlidge's Helen Grace series. While having read the previous books will make you familiar with the recurring characters it isn't necessary in order to enjoy this volume. This series combines wonderful crime mysteries with very well-developed characters, especially Grace. Though lovers of British TV crime dramas will find this right up their alley, I see no reason why people who are not fans of British TV dramas will be turned off. If you enjoy character driven mysteries that keep you guessing until the end then you will enjoy this, as well as the others in the series.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via Penguin/Random House’s First to Read program.

This is the fourth book in the DI Helen Grace series. This time, Helen and her team are chasing a serial arsonist in Southampton. Are they random attacks? Is there a connection between the victims? What is the killer's motive? M. J. Arlidge had me completely fooled throughout. I had no idea who the arsonist was until the reveal was made, and the reveal then led to some pretty powerful scenes. The final pages were jaw-dropping and I now wish I had the fifth book Little Boy Blue. This was really well-plotted, fast-paced and utterly gripping reading. It was great to see Charlie having a big role to play again. I really like her. Helen is as complex as ever, still struggling with her past but also attempting to build relationships. Her attachment to Charlie's family was lovely to see.Fantastic police series with some dark characters! Highly recommended! Thanks to Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Another amazing read by M. J. Arlidge. This is not a lie as I am not a "liar" but the honest to goodness truth. I am a fan of Detective Helen Grace and her partner, Charlie. They make a great team. The more and more I see these two in action, I am thrilled. Both strong co-lead characters. It was kind of like dual stories happening with Helen and Charlie both investigating on opposite sides to come together for an great ending. The beginning started out strong and pulled me in. Not that I expected anything less. I like that I was slowly introduced to all of the other characters in the story and not all at the same time as there was quite a few. If you have never read these books then what are you waiting for as you need to pick up a copy today. This book can be read as a stand alone novel. I can't wait to read the next book.
