About this audiobook

Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn't as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry-though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon's heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, she soon forgets that their courtship is a complete sham. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!

Editor's Note

Book to screen…

Shonda Rhimes’ first series for Netflix is “Bridgerton,” based off of Julia Quinn’s beloved romance following the titular family. The first book starts off as Daphne Bridgerton enters a courtship with Duke Simon Basset. But it’s a sham — Simon just needs a fair lady to pretend to be his devoted lover so it looks like he’s playing by society’s rules.

Couldn't even finish it. Initially a good story line. Started out decent, but turns into this back and forth pointless banter between the couple. It enrages me to read about the female character so ridiculously desperate to be impregnated. She can't act like an adult and discuss it with her partner. She's absolutely annoying and portrays women as nothing else but baby machines and that's all they aspire to be. Why? I cannot read on. Irritates me. Worst of Quinn's books I have read so far. I really liked the other ones. This one has no substance.

The best of the best. The characters are funny, witty and very compelling.

Rosalyn Landor is a great narrator

I don’t know how I feel about the book. There’s a scene in the book that feels “iffy” on whether or not it was consensual. If the book lacked that it would be great.

This was the first book that I can say I liked the “movie” version better than the book. It lacked the desire and passion that was present in the Netflix series.

I enjoyed this book a lot! I do think the tv show was better, but i enjoyed the book enough that i will probably read the second one! If you like historical romance, you will probably like this one! It’s very sweet!

Good story but the “romance” was over done. I’m not a romance reader but was interested in the story because of the new tv series coming out.

I agree....meh...VERY predictable, kind of boring to tell the truth. I was waiting for the twist but nothing came of it. Now, I read this book after reading Jennifer Donnelly's "Tea Rose" series which I could not put down. Bridgertonerton read like a 5th grade story compared to Jennifer Donnelly. I am surprised this made it to Netflix but it sounds like the tv series is better than the book.

    Audiobook: Narration - Rosalyn Landor

This was an exceptional narration! A few chapters listening to this in a slower speed quickly adjusted my ear to this narrator's accent and I was ready to go. I suspect there was no need to slow it down but it’s something I always do with accented audios. I enjoyed both the male and female voices as well as the life she brings to the characters.

With my apologies to my previous audios, this was actually the first audiobook I’ve listened to without ever losing my attention to something outside the story. I found myself so consumed with it that I was surprised when I had accomplished a task that usually diverts me from the book and of which I’ve learned to pause the story. That alone is enough for me to recommend this book despite the questionable scene.

I read this book a hundred years ago, give or take a year or two, and remember loving it. However, I didn’t remember much of the details. As everyone is jumping on the Bridgerton Netflix bandwagon, I wanted to jump too. But I love to read the book before the movie and while I had read it, I needed to remember it. And that brings me to choosing to do my reread via audio and quickly remembering why I had loved this book so long ago!

It was a great book. After watching the Netflix series, I found the books. I like listening to the books so much better because I can do stuff around the house and still enjoy reading.

A good story, had she left out the lustful scenes. There was no need to put them in there as the story can stand on its own.

The Narrator was awesome. The book was ok. It does not elaborate on the characters. If you compare this book to its Netflix counterpart, then Netflix's much better.

Love, love, love this book. It exceeded my expectations. First time reading a historical romance novel and I am excited for more. Being a fan of the Netflix series I thought I would try the books and I am utterly delighted.

The book i rate a 5 star, but the reader's voice was kind of boring at time. I wish Simon's parts were done by a male, have listened to many books where it swiches back and forth for female and male characters/readers and enjoy it so much more!

Pretty good. A bit too naughty to be a proper Regency novel, but it was a fun mix of modern personalities with a Regency background.

Eh... I love the show but the book is missing all the heat. Less of a steamy brooding Simon and more stuffy and anxious, with a Daphne that has none of the brightness of her on-screen counterpart and instead feels mostly
... "fitting to the time period" and almost feels perversely childish by the time the story hits any of the gentle simmer it has. Enough so that the wedding night made me feel genuinely uncomfortable.

Interesting read. I'm looking forward to the next one. Daphne's sexual assault of the Duke isn't treated as sexual assault? Even though she punched the other guy for assaulting her? Weird.
