About this audiobook

Year 2197.

Earth is suffering from the consequences of an environmental catastrophe. Cities the size of continents are drowning in a toxic industrial fog.

Max Bourne is a typical teenager. Like billions of other people, he is forced to live in the protective shell of the individual life support module. His habitat is the virtual Layer. But one day, circumstances force the young man to leave the in-mode. He has no idea that fate will lead him through unimaginable hardships, bring him face to face with military AIs, and teach him to survive in the distant Outlands. He will come to understand that the sum of all technologies, possessed by the four leading corporations of Earth, can either open the way to the stars or destroy human civilization.

This book is absolutely top notch writing and story. the concept is not fully unique, the plot is like the best hard scifi combination of ready player one and the matrix.

The story is very serious and has a vibe much like the three body problem and from a sort of third person perspective.

Essentially it's a story of a teenager who lives in a sort of pod and works/ lives in a VR environment. The real world environment is toxic due to pollution so he cannot go outside. he has lived for most of his life in this VR world and so has almost all of his peers. This has effected humanityand culture in a very strange way. He is waiting for some future point where the government will open up a new clean city in Antarctica so these pod people can sort of live normally (but probably still not go outside). In this VR environment he can earn money by basically playing a side- character in a video game that a rich person is playing. Ai is absolutely illegal and even neural network are somewhat illegal. So if rish people want to play VR with realistic other characters, they must employ some pod people who do it very cheaply.

The story is about some unusual events that lead to him bettering his life situation and climbing the weird cyberpunk social ladder in the strange poisonous world. Most of the characters are very self obsessed and cut throat due to the weird pressures of growing up in a VR headset pod.
