About this audiobook

Fiercely loyal to his friends and comrades, Ewan Mostyn is the toughest in a group of younger sons of nobility who met as soldiers and are now trying desperately to settle back into peaceful Society. Ewan trusts his brawn more than his brains, but when he's offered a job watching the Duke of Ridlington's stubbornly independent daughter, he finds both are challenged.

Lady Lorraine wants none of her father's high-handed ways, and she'll do everything in her power to avoid her distressingly attractive bodyguard-until she lands herself in real trouble. Lorraine begins to see Ewan's protectiveness in a new light, and she can only hope that her stoic guardian will do for her what he's always done-fight for what he wants.

Shana Galen

Shana Galen is three-time Rita award nominee and the bestselling author of passionate Regency romps, including the RT Reviewers' Choice The Making of a Gentleman. Kirkus says of her books, "The road to happily-ever-after is intense, conflicted, suspenseful and fun," and RT Bookreviews calls her books “lighthearted yet poignant, humorous yet touching." She taught English at the middle and high school level off and on for eleven years. Most of those years were spent working in Houston's inner city. Now she writes full time. She's happily married and has a daughter who is most definitely a romance heroine in the making.

Ewan is a survivor. He's strong, broad shouldered and his presence intimidates people. He's the third son of an Earl, a father who's never appreciated him enough because he doesn't believe in Ewan's intelligence. Ewan's lifelong struggles with his mean cousin Francis are still going on and Francis keeps winning. When Ewan can avoid his cousin's destruction of the life of his next intended victim by accepting a job as a protector, preventing Francis from marrying Lady Lorraine, he takes it. Ewan is supposed to keep an eye on Lorraine. She's already tried to elope with Francis and desperately wants to marry him. Ewan thinks marrying his cousin would be a huge mistake and his task is to stop meetings between Lorraine and Francis from happening. Will he be able to protect Lorraine from the man who probably has an ulterior motive for wanting to marry her?

Lorraine tries to escape the confinements of her home. She wants freedom and she's determined to follow her heart. As soon as Ewan appears on the scene, it becomes incredibly difficult to sneak out. He might be a man of few words, but Lorraine seems to perfectly understand him. When he saves her from danger several times her opinion of him slowly changes. Will it change enough to listen to his advice or is Lorraine still trying to do something stupid in the name of love? Is Francis really her one true love or is there a chance she could love another man more?

Third Son's a Charm is a fantastic romantic story. Ewan is an adorable man. I immediately loved his chivalrous personality. He's kind, caring and protective. He's also tough, brave and robust. He's the ideal man to protect Lady Lorraine. She has a fierce personality, she's headstrong, smart and inventive and keeps attracting trouble. They're constantly challenging each other, which was a true delight to see. I absolutely loved the chemistry between them. It's impossible not to admire Ewan, he's such a sweet person and while he can easily defend himself, he also has an endearing vulnerability. I really enjoyed watching Lady Lorraine peel off his multiple fascinating layers one by one. They are a fabulous pair and I loved every single page of their story.

Shana Galen has a terrific descriptive writing style. She makes the beginning of the nineteenth century come to life in an incredible way. I was intrigued by the balls, the beautiful gowns, the rules of society, the schemes and the plotting and the many interesting family relationships. I love it when a story puts a big smile on my face and Third Son's a Charm definitely falls into the category of books that made me happy. It's entertaining, filled with surprising twists and turns and beautiful romance, suspenseful and wonderfully charming. I highly recommend this brilliant book.

This was a great book. The protector did not see it coming ?

This fell a bit flat for me. Lorraine was kind of dumb. It was fairly obvious she didn't love Francis and she knew that, she just insisted on ignoring it which was dumb. I really didn't like how she was such a rude spoiled brat at the beginning when Ewan saved her from being killed. She didn't even bother to thank him and barely even acknowledged him. It didn't endear me to her.

Ewan not being able to read (he's dyslexic) was an interesting storyline, I particularly liked that Lorraine was the one to come up with a solution to the financial problems. There were some funny lines when Ewan got together with Neil and Jasper and I liked the storyline of the parents, but overall I just didn't feel the connection to the characters.

This is my first book from this author, and I look forward to reading more. I ended up liking the main characters quite a bit, and the story was nicely fleshed out without being bogged down by needless details.

** spoiler alert ** This was an interesting and enjoyable read. I liked that while the main romance was happening, the heroine’s parents, or rather, her father, decided to try to repair their marriage as well. That was almost as interesting to me as the rest of the story, because it’s the first time I remember seeing that done, and the background of the breakdown of their marriage was all based on misunderstandings and lies. And there’s the main plot, with the background plot of all the men who survived one division of the Napoleonic War. It’s not the first time the latter has been done, but it was done well. I also liked the fact that Ewan has dyslexia and has been mistaken his whole life by those who don’t really know him as an idiot. So when the villain turns out to be the cousin who tortured him during their childhood, that was an unexpected surprise. Character development was subtle and mostly about self-awareness on Ewan’s part and the realization that he was more than the summation of others’ opinions of him. It was good enough that I have the second book out, this one about Neil.

Full review appeared on Reader's Edyn on 11/05/17 Lady Lorraine Ridlington has a propensity toward bad sense. Always getting herself into potentially scandalous situations, and fancying herself in love with a less than desirable man, Lorraine is the only daughter of a Duke and stands to inherit a substantial fortune. Her father decides to hire a bodyguard for her. His mission is simple – keep her away from Francis (his cousin) and allow her to be introduced to other potential suitors who might make her happy. Lorraine is appalled at having a bodyguard thwart her secret rendezvous with Francis, but she is also dangerously attracted to him. He reminds her of Francis, but is also nothing like him. The more time they spend together, the more she learns about him, and the more she wants him. Scandal be damned, she’s going to get through to Ewan and she’s not above using her body to make it happen. Of course, the added bonus of knowing him intimately isn’t much a deterrent. But he’s a third son and convincing him of his worth is going to be an order that may even be taller than she realizes.Ewan Mostyn is a third son. The heir, the spare, and the third son. He wasn’t needed and his options in life were few, so he went in to the service. A man of very few words – more frequently one-word answers when absolutely necessary. Ewan is known as a bit of an enforcer following his service for his country and he really only ever associates with his former “special ops” team. They survived several dangerous missions together and are now bonded as former brothers in arms. When Ewan if offered a position to protect Lorrie, he practically jumps at it. Francis may have been his cousin, but he’s never been trustworthy, and he immediately knows he’s up to something in his pursuit of Lorraine. Doesn’t hurt that he’ll be able to exact some revenge on Francis by keeping him away from his target – nasty in childhood and favored by his father even now, Ewan has no love lost for his cousin and he’s going to make sure he not only stays away from Lorrie, he’s going to uncover his true intentions. But falling for Lorrie wasn’t part of the plan and Ewan’s protective instincts toward the sensual woman is something he’s never dealt with before.Shana Galen is one of my go-to authors, so this review was automatic. I adore Historical and her style of writing always guarantees a world in which the reader becomes well and truly immersed. Once I start a book, I do not stop until it is complete. I was curious how in the heck she was going to make this story work initially. Ewan literally spoke very few words and didn’t seem like much of a sweep-you-off-of-your-feet kind of guy. And Lorrie isn’t your typical Duke’s daughter. She knows how to behave, but she says what she is thinking and feeling – and that doesn’t include her passionate sexual curiosity. She is an innocent, but she has some understand of what she speaks of despite her inability to process her exact feelings. She only knows she experiences an intense longing that builds when Ewan is around and the more time they spend together; the closer they get; the more stolen kisses; the deeper her longing and the closer they skate near her ruin. I absolutely loved that Lorrie knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to go after it. And Ewan in his quest to remain honorable to his word struggles to resist her and her wanton displays of desire for him. Every time he tries to gain an upper hand, she not only calls his bluff, but raises the ante. It’s a unique situation that I rarely encounter within historical characters and I loved every moment. I was thrilled with how Ewan broke out of his shell – so to speak – at least with Lorrie. And super cute addition – not only does the reader get to watch this romance blossom, they are also treated to a second romance plot within.I really cannot think of a single aspect I disliked within this book. I did enjoy most of Ewan’s combat friends and the glimpse in to their lives – and especially the end of the book that leads me to assume who the next victim to love will be in this series. ? I can’t wait to revisit the Survivors series and hope to encounter both Lorrie and Ewan again in subsequent books. The banter, wit, and Ewan’s no nonsense single word answers were a joy – and I frequently found myself giggling as I read, which doesn’t count the several times I was reading with a huge grin on my face. Galen crafts a world with unlikely lead characters who beautifully blossom into something charming and unexpected – characters you can’t help but adore. Underdogs, romance, a bit of suspense, heroes, strong-willed characters, wit and charm, all wrapped up in a brilliantly engaging plot – lovers of Historical are guaranteed to love this latest Galen treasure.Kindle version provided by Sourcebooks Casablanca/NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had so much fun reading this historical romance! I have to admit that the cover of this book is what first grabbed my attention. I am always a sucker for pretty covers and the cover of this book is simply gorgeous. I have enjoyed Shana Galen's work in the past and this sounded like a good story so I knew that I would have to read it. It turned out to be a very enjoyable read that was really hard to put down. Ewan knows his place in life. He is the third son of an Earl and is therefore rather useless to his family. He has been a solider and is known for some of his brave acts but that hasn't changed his father's opinion of him. Many see Ewan as a dimwit because he has been unable to learn to read. When he is offered a position to guard a Duke's daughter, he decides to take the job.Lorrie really wants to marry. So much so that she has recently tried to elope with her love, Francis. Lorrie is determined to make the marriage happen and believes that she and Francis are in love. The Duke opposes the match and tasks Ewan with making sure it does not happen. Ewan becomes a permanent fixture at all of the society events attended by Lorrie and her family. I loved these two together! Ewan tends to doubt himself since he has been told he is dumb his whole life. Lorrie sees him for the intelligent man that he truly is. Lorrie believes that she is in love with Francis but she soon learns that love is something very different. This pair had a lot of wonderful chemistry with each other and complimented each other quite nicely.I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance. The book is filled with wonderful characters and a few exciting moments. I can't wait to read the next book in this delightful series!I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley.

Well done Galen! Third Son does indeed charm!I really enjoyed the first entry in Galen's new series, The Survivor's.Lady Lorraine, daughter of the Duke of Ridlington, is a bundle of energy that she has trouble keeping inside. She's determined, inquisitive, daring and delightful.Ewan Mostyn is a returned soldier, a younger son of Lord Pembroke. He was one of a number of younger sons who fought and survived the Napoleonic Wars with Lieutenant Colonel Draven’s special unit. 'The survivors called themselves the Survivors. They called Ewan the Protector.'Back in civilian life, the Colonel has opened a club for the men of his unit. A place they can gather and support each other, eat and sleep. For Ewan it's his lifeline. The story begins with a runaway dog, a slightly damaged owner and a large bulk of a man who saves both from impending doom, not that the lady seems at all grateful much less aware of her eminent danger. The Duke of Ridlington wants a bodyguard for his daughter and after the contretemps with Ewan and his daughter it seems the Duke's decided that Ewan is the man for the job. This first of the series that will be woven around these survivors is a winner. Wonderful interaction between Lady Lorraine and Ewan--often hilarious. I love the tree limb sequences. Of course there's an antagonist. Such a coincidence, (Hmm! the literary universe does move in mysterious ways), that it's Ewan's slimey cousin Francis, a person who's been a thorn in his flesh since early childhood. That these two should meet, and that Lorraine is the intersecting point, raises all sorts of emotions, bad memories and angst for Ewan and adds the requisite sinister note to the story. I loved Galen's writing style, her turn of phrase. I was particularly struck by Ewan's metaphor regarding Francis's pursuit of his charge. 'Ewan had no illusions that his cousin was in love with Lady Lorraine. He wanted her dowry, and once he had it, he would discard his wife like a browning apple core.' That last image is brilliant! And to think the starting point for this series was 'The Dirty Dozen' as Galen says in her Author's Note. (I always read the authors notes. I find them so enlightening.)Anyway, I'm sold! I'm so looking forward to all the Survivor's stories!A NetGalley ARC

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I normally enjoy Shana Galen's books, and this one was one of them. This was a different concept, a new series she is starting about survivors and I think you will enjoy. Our hero Ewan, is that is a little rough, but the guy is a survivor you have to give him due. Then we have our heroine Lorrie, who is an innocent, but sassy at the same time, and enjoyable, and it was fun to read about them. I can't wait to continue to read about the continuing stories.
