About this audiobook

In this gripping stand-alone from bestselling author Mary Burton, an FBI agent must catch a copycat killer. The only difference this time: she’s the final victim.

Catching monsters helps FBI agent Kate Hayden keep her nightmares at bay. Now an urgent call brings her back to San Antonio, the scene of her violent past. A brutal new murder shows hallmarks of a serial killer nicknamed the Samaritan. Tricky part is, Kate already caught him.

Either Kate made a deadly error, or she’s got a copycat on her hands. Paired with homicide detective Theo Mazur, she quickly realizes this murder is more twisted than it first appeared. Then a second body is found, the mode of death identical to a different case that Kate thought she’d put behind her.

Now Kate and Detective Mazur aren’t just working a homicide; the investigative pair is facing a formidable enemy who knows Kate intimately. While Mazur is personally trying to protect Kate, the closer they are drawn to the killer, the clearer it becomes that in this terrifying game, there is only one rule: don’t believe everything you see…

A very good start to a new series, the books are read standalone but are part of the same series…
The book was quick and easy to fall into as per usual of Mary’s books.

This story was an exciting romantic suspense title with two intriguing main characters. Kate Hayden is an FBI agent who is a profiler and a specialist in linguistics. When the story begins, she is trying to track down a man who puts young women in boxes and rapes them repeatedly until he gets tired of them. Kate rescues his latest victim Sara and promises to find the man. However, she is called back to San Antonio because there has been a crime committed that is eerily similar to a string of murders that Kate thought were solved. She isn't eager to go back to San Antonio. She left when she graduated from high school to get away from a family that had fallen apart after Kate's father was murdered and Kate was almost killed by her former boyfriend. Detective Theo Mazur has caught the new crime and is eager to get Kate's input. Mazur has recently joined the San Antonio police force. His ex-wife moved there with their 14-year-old daughter to pursue her career. After losing his son to crib death and watching his marriage fall apart because of it, he wasn't going to give up any time with his daughter. He's still getting used to a new city and new job but he brought with him years of experience as a homicide detective in Chicago.Mazur and Kate investigate first believing that the murder was a copycat killing. When there is a second killing which mimics another of Kate's closed cases, Kate begins to think that her old boyfriend, now out of prison, is going after her for revenge. Between the guy who likes to kidnap girls and keep them in wooden boxes and the ex-boyfriend with a major case of crazy, Kate and Mazur have their hand full. They need to find both of them before more people are killed. This was an engaging mystery with really creepy villains. I liked Kate's single mindedness and her total focus on her job. I liked Mazur's devotion to his daughter and I also liked that he saw Kate's quirkiness and found it attractive. This is advertised as a stand alone mystery but I would be eager to find out what happens next for Kate and Mazur.

Kate Hayden is the FBI's best profiler. She has solved a number of serial killing cases. But this new murder in San Antonio is close to home, close to where her father was killed, and she herself was set on her career path. A text message sent to a burner phone left with the body is directed to her, and the words are hauntingly familiar.Kate is essentially a loner, but her boss is clear: she must work with the locals on this one, and she has 3 days to make her contribution. It looks like this murder may be a copy-cat killing: but is it? There are aspects to the murder that only the original serial killer could know, but he is still in jail. And then Kate realises that a voice is reaching out from the past. He has been in jail for 17 years for the death of her father, but is now free. What does he want?

“The Last Move” is a taut and terrific contemporary romantic suspense thriller from a master of the genre—author Mary Burton. FBI profiler Kate Hayden is an expert in forensic linguistics, providing insights into crime solving through the study of words and written communications. Every nuance of each communication is examined with microscopic intensity—even the smallest clue could lead to resolution and capture. When Kate is called back to San Antonio to investigate a killing similar to a case she had previously worked , she must put behind her the nightmare of her own tragic past. Detective Theo Mazur is struck by two things when meeting Kate: her petite size and youthful appearance, and her no-nonsense, focused professionalism—an intriguing combination. Mazur had recently relocated from Chicago in an attempt to stay close to his teen-aged daughter, who lived with his ex-wife. Kate’s analysis of Theo through his bearing and his trim, crisp outward image suggested former military service, and a decade or more of law enforcement experience. As someone who had known his own personal tragedy, Theo recognized the same wariness in Kate. Working together to solve the crime brings on an awareness between them which blooms into something more—but personal wants and needs must take second place to the daunting task which looms before them. When the case hits all to close to home for Theo, it will take all of their resourcefulness and skill, plus a large helping of luck, to prevent more heartache at the hands of a vengeful sociopath.Book Copy Gratis Author

I thought that this book worked really well. I have only read one book by Mary Burton before starting this one but I enjoyed it so I was pretty eager to pick this one up. I was really pulled into the story from the start and ended up listening to the entire book in just a couple of days. This was a book that I wanted to listen to for hours at a time and completely enjoyed the experience.Kate is an FBI agent and we learn pretty early on that she handles some pretty difficult cases. She is called to a crime scene in Texas that has all of the trademarks of another criminal. A criminal that Kate put behinds bars. She has to figure out what is going on quickly before anyone else is harmed.Detective Theo Mazur is a divorced father who has recently moved to Texas to remain close to his daughter. He is the new guy at the department, having left a more prestigious position in Chicago, and reaches out for help to the FBI just as soon as he sees the similarities between his case and the notorious killer. I thought that Kate and Theo made a great team. I liked how their partnership seemed to work from the very beginning. I was completely hooked by the case. There were so many twists and turns that I couldn't figure out how things would work out. I liked that there were a few other issues that they were dealing with outside of the case because it made the characters feel a lot more authentic. Kate's past, her relationship with her family, and Theo's desire to stay near his daughter were all not only interesting but each topic added to the overall story. Teri Schnaubelt did a wonderful job with the narration. There is a pretty large group of characters in this story and she made each one of them come alive. I was completely engaged in the story from the very start and found myself hanging on every word. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to more of her work in the future.I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a fantastic mystery thriller with just a bit of romance worked into the story. The romance was a very minor but quite natural element in the book. I found this book to be rather exciting and hard to put down. I hope to read more from Mary Burton soon.I won a digital copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway and borrowed the audio from Kindle Unlimited.

FBI Profiler and linguistics expert, Kate Hayden, is on the trail of the latest serial killer, a man that likes to keep his victims in boxes and only taking them out when he wants to play with them, when she is called away to San Antonio, TX on a new case where a copycat killer is duplicating a murder that she has already solved. The only problem is they already caught the bad guy and he was currently locked up and awaiting trial. Could it be an accomplice or someone else entirely? When a second body is found with an eerie resemblance to another case of Kate's, it soon becomes clear that the killer has his sights on her. Partnering up with Theo Mazur, a recent transplant to the San Antonio police force, they both work together to solve the case.

I honestly loved Kate Hayden. She was a strong main character, and a forced to be reckoned with. She was smart and great at her job. She may not have had many people skills, but she was efficient in solving cases, and really cared about the victims. She has her own troubled past which has kept her away from San Antonio for the last seventeen years. Going back, she will have to face what happened to her all those years ago, as well as, help solve the case of a copycat killer.

Theo Mazur has his own troubles. His son passed away at a young age and his marriage soon fell apart. His wife left taking their only daughter and moved from Chicago to San Antonio, TX due to a career move. Hence, the reason why Theo soon followed to be closer to his daughter. Theo would do anything for his teenage daughter and you can see that through his actions that he wants to be involved in her life. One thing I loved about Theo is he did not try to protect or shield Kate, like most alpha heroes would do, to the point where she could not do her job. He knew she was quite capable at her job and they worked together as a team to catch the latest killer.

Mary Burton never ceases to amaze me. There has not been one book of hers that I did not like. THE LAST MOVE is no different nor does it disappoint. It is chock full of twists and turns, the creepiest of villains, and a mystery that will leave you guessing with one hell of a surprise at the end. I did NOT see that one coming. If you have never read a book by Mary Burton, shame on you! This is master storytelling at its finest. Mary Burton knows how to weave a story and suck you in. My suggestion is to leave an entire row on your bookshelf open just for Mary Burton's books scroll through her back book list and buy every single one of them. You will not regret it.

EXCELLENT in all ways! Suspenseful with twists and turns even this sneak to the end of the book to find out who-done-it reader found fascinating from beginning to end! What I liked: * Everything – except the evil characters I so wanted to see put down* Kate Hayden – FBI profiler: smart, driven, unapologetic, straight-shooter with hidden depths* Theo Mazur – Homicide Detective: dedicated to his job and his daughter with skills and tenacity and personality to boot. * The story: gritty, dark, compelling, twisted and unapologetic with warmth and charm in the right places* The characters that were on the side that added to the story but also called to me wanting to have their stories told, too. (is this really a standalone without other stories to follow for those characters?)* The twists and turns* The character development* The backstories* I could go on and on but stand by the first statement – everything was spot-on and this is definitely worth reading! What I didn’t like: * Having the book end and having to say goodbye to the characters. Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC – This is my honest review.

The Last Move is the latest book from author, Mary Burton. Ms. Burton shows that she is not slowing down anytime soon. The team of FBI agent Kate Hayden and Homicide Detective Theo Mazur is a great pairing. They work well together. Both are detail orientated and professional. There were a few tense moments where both could have lost their cool but they remained focused at the task at hand. Which paid off in the end game. Although, there was some chemistry sparking between Kate and Theo. I was rooting for them both. They had baggage but this made them human. Kate is the type of female role model that young girls and women can look up to and is relatable. Theo is the guy that women want. While, up front it was apparent who Theo and Kate were tracking down; Ms. Burton still managed to sneak in a few twists. This was evident when the story shifted in the last third of the story. The intensity picked up more. I look forward to see this pair again in the future. The Last Move is the right move as you treat yourself to a copy of this book.
