About this audiobook
At forty-five, Hannah Smith is at a crossroads. That’s her spin on it. The reality is she’s divorced, jobless, and moving back to her family home in Iowa to keep an eye on her mother, who’s slipping into dementia. Her return stirs up the same unnerving sense of disconnect Hannah has felt since childhood—always the odd girl out, the loner outshone by her two older sisters. Hannah knew the feelings of hurt would come back. But she never expected fear. Because when her mother looks into her eyes and whispers, “You’re not my daughter,” Hannah is beginning to believe it’s not just the rambling of a confused woman.
It’s the truth.
Now Hannah’s following the trail of a family mystery to the dark coast of Big Sur, where years ago a lie was born—and buried. As frightened as she is to unearth it, Hannah knows this is the last chance she has before her past—and all its terrible secrets—are lost forever.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Such an unrealistic about face on her whole perspective. Not believable
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I loved this book. When I started reading it, I couldn't remember what the book was supposed to be about- if it was a romance or mystery. It didn't matter because as soon as Hannah got the results back that her blood type was O and her mom's was AB, I knew there was going to be a good story!!! The book did not disappoint. Hannah's mom, Dorothy, is in a nursing home and is suffering from dementia. She constantly tells Hannah she isn't her daughter and doesn't recognize her. Dorothy does not have that problem with Hannah's sisters. The mystery starts when Hannah discovers her mother's blood type. Hannah is the splitting image of her father, but can't imagine him cheating. Hannah travels to California where her parents lived before moving to Iowa. It'a also the place where Hannah and her sisters were born. I loved the description of Big Sur and felt I was right there with Hannah. Hannah discovers information about about her parents, grandfather, and a religious commune. In the end Hannah found out what she needed to know and realized her home was back in Iowa, with her sisters and her mother. I definitely recommend the book. It was a quick read but held my interest until the last page. I enjoyed the writing style, the characters and the story-line. I look forward to reading more books by the author!!Thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author, Victoria Helen Stone, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was really good, a page turner. Then the last couple chapters just fell off. The ending was disappointing.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This showed up as a suspenseful thriller in my recommendations, but it really wasn't any of that to me, so 2 stars for that. I would rate it 3 stars for women's fiction - The idea behind the story seemed to be there, but it just didn't come together for me. The end of the last chapter was basically the entire book in 10 seconds. It could perhaps make a good movie with more work, but the book was just meh for me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was average. I’m not really sure why I didn’t like it, though? Narration was good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It has a great cast of believable characters in very normal circumstance. Although the plot took a surprising turn to the occult, the motivations were realistic and earthbound. Good fiction for an afternoon.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a good book. I was expecting a little more suspense, but it was a great read. Narration was wonderful, and it kept me interested.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5What did I like about this book? I can’t think of a thing.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Not her best work. I just don’t think the story idea was there TBH. I enjoyed her novels Evelyn After and False Step much better. So I hope she keeps her binge worthy novels coming!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5As someone who watched a loved one move from dementia into Alzheimer's, and who has always been the black sheep of the family, I found it really easy to identify with Hannah, and her quest for the truth while struggling with her obligations to her mother. Although the story may feel heartbreaking at first, the mystery will quickly sweep you up in its embrace and carry you off. Who is Hannah really? Will she be able to uncover the truth as her mother slips farther away?
