About this audiobook

Champions Way is a searing expose of how the multibillion-dollar college sports empire fails universities, students, and athletes.

College sports have never been bigger. Once a roughneck intercollegiate pastime, football now commands millions of fans and generates massive revenues. New York Times investigative reporter Mike McIntire chronicles the rise in the popularity and power of college athletics, revealing deeply troubling relationships between college sports programs, the universities that host them, booster organizations, local police departments, and the courts. Using the Florida State Seminoles, one of the most successful teams in NCAA history, as an example, McIntire details a system that exploits athletes for profit, enables players to violate academic standards and, in some cases, shields them from criminal prosecution.

At the heart of Champions Way is the wrenching story of a whistleblower, Christie Suggs. This shocking expose reveals the extent of a corrupt culture at the center of American higher education, and the toll it takes on the players and those who dare to challenge the system.

I found it very hard to read this book. Not because the book was not well researched or well written, which it was, but because of the heartbreaking stories inside. So many abused women were not able to get justice because their attackers were football players, protected by the University and by the coaches. To a large extent, the community and the police department also allowed crimes, assaults and rapes to go uninvestigated to protect the football team.

This book is about the Florida State University football program. Many of the criminal and violent incidents committed by Florida State University football players happened under the tenure of Bobby Bowden. Bowden in many ways facilitated the cover-up of criminal and violent behavior by members of his football teams.

But you could write this book about other football programs and frankly about other college athletes in other sports. Bad enough that many, if not most, of the athletes in major programs don’t bother to go to class or hand in papers.

There aren’t very many institutions that are more corrupt than college sports. From recruiting to under the table deals for cash and cars, college sports are a cesspool.

Well-written book but I have read and heard the stories so many times before. Nothing changes.
