    Saint Augustine (354-430) was a Catholic theologian, philosopher, and writer. Born to a Catholic mother and pagan father—Berbers living in Numidia, Roman North Africa (modern day Algeria)—Augustine’s lifelong commitment to faith and deeply personal writings make him an important figure for religion, literature, and Western philosophy. He is considered influential for developing the Catholic doctrines of original sin and predestination, though he also made contributions to philosophy that extend beyond religion, including general ethics, just war theory, and the concept of free will. Augustine is also recognized today as an early and significant memoirist and autobiographer, adapting these literary forms in order to blend religious teaching with personal stories and anecdotes.

      Although lengthy and sometimes difficult to follow (especially in the later books), ‘Confessions’ is a fascinating glimpse into fourth-century life as well as an account of God’s grace towards Augustine throughout the entirety of his life.

      This book really helped to draw me closer to Jesus in humility. So amazing the way he spoke about his mother and her prayers for him. Deeply moving and inspiring.

      An interesting outlook on many of the questions regarding God and his involvement in the pain and suffering of the world, why he doesn't intervene, why some things are the way they are, and many questions I've also asked myself about God.

      How do you write a review of one of the most thought provoking works in Christian literature?

      It was fantastic and eye opening. My own ideas and thoughts were met and answered by the book and, I think, some influence of the Holy Spirit. 10/10 will read again.

      This is an excellent translation of Augustine's Confessions in modern English. I was struck by how modern some of his thoughts seem to be, which I guess only shows that humanity hasn't changed much in its longings , thoughts and needs since ancient times. The book is also well narrated which makes it easy to listen to. This is a book to be listened to a little at a time as there is so much to take in.
