About this audiobook
A powerful and inspiring examination of the connection between the potential for great talent and conditions commonly thought to be “disabilities,” revealing how the source of our struggles can be the origin of our greatest strengths.
In The Power of Different, psychiatrist and bestselling author Gail Saltz examines the latest scientific discoveries, profiles famous geniuses who have been diagnosed with all manner of brain “problems”—including learning disabilities, ADD, anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and Autism—and tells the stories of lay individuals to demonstrate how specific deficits in certain areas of the brain are directly associated with the potential for great talent. Saltz shows how the very conditions that cause people to experience difficulty at school, in social situations, at home, or at work, are inextricably bound to creative, disciplinary, artistic, empathetic, and cognitive abilities.
In this pioneering work, listeners will find engaging scientific research and stories from historical geniuses and everyday individuals who have not only made the most of their conditions, but who have flourished because of them. They are leaning into their brain differences to:
*Identify areas of interest and expertise
*Develop work arounds
*Create the environments that best foster their talents
*Forge rewarding interpersonal relationships
Enlightening and inspiring, The Power of Different proves that the unique wiring of every brain can be a source of strength and productivity, and contributes to the richness of our world.

Reviews for The Power of Different
15 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5No, if you have a mental disorder or you neurodivergent, it doesn’t make you a genius at all. This book is very useful for parents with ND kids and/or mental disorders, you can help them better. I was almost 40 when I was diagnosed with autism and adhd. For me it was not useful at all. Every chapter is about a ND or mental disorder. You can find many books about each of them, so I hardly read stg new, even though I’m not an expert in this field. Yes, if you are diagnosed as a child, and you have caring and financially stable parents, you can achieve a lot. But if you don’t, it’s extremely hard. Only 15% of the autistic people have a job. The life expectancy about them is 36-38 years old due to suicide and seizures. And I could tell you a fact like this regarding every chapter. So it’s good to have a positive attitude, but not good ignoring the terrible and many times are literally life threatening problems what is coming by being different.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very, very interesting and I don't know what else to write
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very inspirational book, super useful and thought provoking. Gave a refreshed perspective for my work with special Ed students. The writing style is fluid and entertaining, even when explaining the science behind brain differences. Totally recommend for anyone interested in education, psychology or if you are a parent to a child with a brain difference.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have read a lot of parenting books. I wish I had read this one first!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. It’s nice to see the unique talents of Different Thinkers recognized and celebrated. The author’s approach is refreshing and hopeful. Autism and people who have mental health illnesses don’t just have to be defined or have it define them in negative terms. There’s a silver lining, that can be found when we change our perspective away from trying to box all people into normative categories. I recommend this book for all people whether they have, know someone or just want to learn more about people who are different thinkers.
