- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a relatively brief cultural history of medieval Europe, focused on France. The constant warfare of the age is the background, but this author traces the development of the feudal system into the system of cities, trade, and technological advancement leading to the Renaissance. Clothing, diet, entertainment, and household management are discussed in detail.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very interesting , packed with information. Too much to absorb at one time.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is accurate in the sense it doesn't lie but it blithely omits so much its value even as introductory overview is lacking. Maybe it's a good primer for 4th graders, 40 years ago. Find another book.
