About this audiobook

An epic, romantic, and action-packed fantasy inspired by the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, about a bastard princess who must take on an evil fae to save her brother’s soul, from C. J. Redwine, the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen. Perfect for fans of Graceling and the Lunar Chronicles.

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

This book. Where do I start? It was SO good to finally get a refreshing take on fairytale retellings. I loved EVERYTHING about this book. The characters where REAL. Their hopes, dreams, fears, faults. Their decisions where genuine, and they had consequences. The author didn’t shy away from the dark part of this fairytale, and I LOVED every minute of it. This book was immensely satisfying and if you enjoy fairytale retellings that pay homages to the original tails, you will enjoy this book. I’m diving into the next book now.

This is a story about humans who get tangled up with the fae. Alistair Teague is the Wish Granter. He is an exiled fae who is used to making bargains with humans and taking their soul as payment. Ari and Thad are the bastard children of the King. When the Queen finally has a son, she decides that Ari and Thad should be killed. She succeeds in having their mother killed and Thad makes a deal with Teague to save his sister.Thad wants to bargain only for Ari's safety but Teague won't make the deal unless Thad wishes to be King. In his desperation, he agrees. Next thing you know, the King, Queen and their baby is dead and Thad finds himself King at age seventeen owing his soul to the Wish Granter. Not only that but he can't intefere with Teague's actions in the city and Teague is a ruthless crime lord.Once Ari finds out about the deal her brother made, she decides that she will find a way to get him out of his deal with Teague. Ari is smart and an excellent baker but her clumsiness prevents her from being much of a warrior. Clearly, she will have to use her brain to defeat Teague. She turns to new weapons master Sebastian Vaughn to teach her to use weapons. Sebastian is very familiar with Teague since his brutal father works for him. Sebastian was abused by his father frequently until his father was sent away to manage Teague's interests elsewhere. The abuse left him avoiding being touched by anyone and keeping quiet and to himself. Ari decides that she is going to be his friend and lets him know that she can be relentless. The two have all sorts of harrowing adventures and along the way they fall in love. This was an entertaining fantasy story. I liked Ari's personality and determination to save her brother and her kingdom. I also liked Sebastian and don't recall another fantasy hero who deals with the consequences of abuse. Fans of fantasy will enjoy this engaging story.

It was a constant roller coaster with the right amount of dark fantasy mixed with a happy ending to set it all right. I loved this book!

I really liked how she made the villain ( no spoilers ) out to be a form of mobsters. The use of poverty stricken towns , addicted to his drug ( made from apples WINK WINK) also brings about a realistic subversive tone.

I did like it, but the romance was waaaaaaay loaded in this story as oppose to the first tale

Another great retelling by C.J. Redwine this time of Rumplestilskin. I loved the back and forth with Sebastian and Ari ad their relationship. It was another better version of the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin.

If you haven’t read this or her other fairy tale retellings, you should go get them and read them!

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD AND MY HEART IS BURSTING OMG.Twins Ari and Thad, the bastard children the King of Súndraille are suddenly thrust into the spotlight (and Thad the throne) when the royal family mysteriously dies overnight. In a fool hearty attempt to save his sisters life, Thad had made a deal with the Wish Granter. A fae whispered about from children stories; evil and cruel, he could grant your hearts desire, for the price of your soul. Ari refuses to allow Thad to loose his soul and is determined to find a way to defeat the Wish Granter at his own game. With the help of the new weapons master, Sebastian, Ari embarks on a deadly game of tit for tat with the most powerful and ruthless fae in the land.I have to say, I think I loved this book even more than The Shadow Queen (if that's even possible?!). Redwine gives us another fairytale retelling (Rumpelstiltskin) from one of Ravespires neighboring kingdom, Súndraille. I enjoyed the cameo in the beginning from Loreli and Kol (made me sqeeee!), those two are just too cute. Ari was hands down my favorite princess, ever."Dancing is for people who don't truly appreciate the buffet" She is totally my kind of people and I like where her heads at. Not only does she have a healthy appreciation and respect for snacks; she is brave even when she's terrified, smart and cunning where she lacks physical strength. Sebastian's transformation was really the best part of the book for me. Seeing this hard, anxious, mess of a young man transform into someone who allows love into his life was fun to read. The poor kid endured so much pain at the hands of his cruel and malicious father Jacob, and was obviously suffering from some pretty hard core PTSD, and yet he was able (with Aris help of course) to break down those walls of isolation and self preservation and be able to face his worst fears and inner demons to not only love, but allow himself to be loved in return. Simply beautiful. His whole arc just proved that your upbringing doesn't define you, you choose who you want to be, day in and day out. I am so excited to see which kingdom/fairytale we will visit with Redwine next. Whichever it is, I am certain it will be incredible!
