About this audiobook

The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It is often considered, along with The Three Musketeers, as Dumas' most popular work. It is also among the highest selling books of all time.

It is no exaggeration to say “Monte Cristo” still ranks as one of the most exciting stories imaginable, one every bit as good as anything Steven Spielberg or J.K. Rowling could ever conjure up.

"Began to read ‘Monte Cristo’ at six one morning and never stopped till eleven at night." —William Makepeace Thackeray

The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It is primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, forgiveness and death, and is told in the style of an adventure story.

Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.

Robin Buss’s lively English translation is complete and unabridged, and remains faithful to the style of Dumas’s original. This edition includes an introduction, explanatory notes and suggestions for further reading.

Before I could begin reading “The Count of Monte Cristo,” I decided to read “Napoleon” by Andrew Roberts to set the table for the fabled literary journey I was about to undertake. It helped put me back in that Bourbon-Napoleonic frame of mind.

I love my audible app. I have several conditions as well as chronic pain and some days I just can't move or I need a distraction. On the bad days and plenty of the good too, I listen to fantasy books and imagine having a life inside that book and being swept up in the story. My meds can make it hard for me to concentrate enough to physically read so audible is the next best thing

a fantastic audio novel which tells that the idea of revenge in The Count of Monte Cristo came from a story in a book compiled by Jacques Peuchet, a French police archivist, published in 1838 after the death of the author.Dumas included this essay in one of the editions from 1846. Peuchet told of a shoemaker, Pierre Picaud, living in Nîmes in 1807, who was engaged to marry a rich woman when three jealous friends falsely accused him of being a spy for England. Picaud was placed under a form of house arrest in the Fenestrelle Fort, where he served as a servant to a rich Italian cleric. When the cleric died, he left his fortune to Picaud, whom he had begun to treat as a son. Picaud then spent years plotting his revenge on the three men who were responsible for his misfortune. He stabbed the first with a dagger on which were printed the words "Number One", and then he poisoned the second. The third man's son he lured into crime and his daughter into prostitution, finally stabbing the man himself. This third man, named Loupian, had married Picaud's fiancée while Picaud was under arrest.

In another of the "True Stories", Peuchet describes a poisoning in a family. This story, also quoted in the Pleiade edition, obviously served as a model for the chapter of the murders inside the Villefort family. The introduction to the Pleiade edition mentions other sources from real life: Abbé Faria existed and died in 1819 after a life with much resemblance to that of the Faria in the novel. As for Dantès, his fate is quite different from his model in Peuchet's book, since the latter is murdered by the "Caderousse" of the plot. But Dantès has "alter egos" in two other Dumas works; in "Pauline" from 1838, and more significantly in "Georges" from 1843, where a young man with black ancestry is preparing a revenge against white people who had humiliated him

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is one of my favorite books of all time. Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling adventure about envy, betrayal, revenge and redemption kept me turning the pages many years ago, and it’s one the nineteenth century books I hold dear to my heart. (Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and George Elliot’s Daniel Deronda are also on the top list.) So I was excited about this movie. Jim Caviezel plays Edmund Dantes! Be still, my overactive imagination! (My heart too.) And the rest of the cast — Guy Pierce, James Frain, Luis Guzmán, just to name a few — are perfect in their roles.

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is an amazing story! This Kindle Edition translation of this book is so bad that it's comical. It's got so many mistakes, it takes a translator to understand the translation! It's like whoever translated it didn't speak English or it was translated by a computer.
Here are a couple of my favorite "translations" from French to English:
PRICEY - as in "Hello my pricey Father"...word that should have been used: TREASURED
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA or USA as in "I'm having a party at my United States of America home in the South of France."...word that should have been used: COUNTRY
CANDY - as in "She had such a candy face."...word that should have been used: SWEET
HOMOSEXUAL - "All of the ladies at the party were happy and homosexual."....word that should have been used: GAY
INTERNATIONAL - "What in the international is going on?"...word that should have been used: WORLD
PHOTOGRAPH - "Why do you photograph such a gloomy future."...word that should have been used: PICTURE
DOMESTIC - "Welcome to my domestic"...word that should have been used: HOME
    ...and so many more!

The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. 2019 is the year I get to my backlist and re-read some of the classics I haven't visited in years. It's been over a decade since I last read The Count of Monte Cristo, which is easily my favorite classic novel to date. Looking forward to taking my time through this one alongside my other reads. In fact, I propose that the grandest of bitchslaps be henceforth referred to as a Monte Cristo Bitchslap because of the masterful manner in which Edmond Dantès delivers one colossal bitchslap after another to all who wronged him. And to those who wronged him by association? Thou shalt also receive a furious bitchslap! Clemency shall only be bestowed upon the righteous and goodly. If revenge is a dish best served cold, then the final three hundred pages of the book achieve Antarctic levels of chilliness. The consequences of betraying Edmond Dantès are seismic. God help you if you're in this camp, for you will be the sorriest son-of-a-bitch who ever graced Planet Earth when Dantès points to your rotten, conniving soul and bellows "J'ACCUSE!" There is much gnashing of teeth, clawing at clothes, and raising of eyes Heavenward. There is much begging and pleading.

what an wonderful audiobook.i have gone through all the audio stories of this book and it frightained me ,on many ways.this book is very much intresting.everyone should listen this book.
The love story surprised me most of all. Instead of taking on a highly sexual slant, as all these new films do, it was understated, the female lead doing an admirable job of portraying the wounded lover, who has always longed for her Edmund. I loved the innocence that she managed to bring to the role, a really terrific actress and a really beautiful one as well.thanks for placing such an wonderful book audio book in this site.
