Uno dei romanzi più famosi della Austen, da lei scritto a vent’anni, manifesta una maturità insolita per l’età, ed è stato utilizzato per numerosi film. L’ironia e l’intelligenza della scrittrice descrivono la vita della società inglese nel settecento, e come questa poteva essere, per le donne, un impedimento ad essere considerate semplicemente esseri umani. Ma l’ostacolo più importante all’espressione di sé, sostiene l’autrice, non sta tanto nel costume della società, quando nella predisposizione d’animo, e in particolare nell’orgoglio e nei giudizi preformati .La musica d’accompagnamento è di Mozart: 12 variazioni sul tema “Twinkle twinkle little star”.

Jane Austen was born in 1775 in rural Hampshire, the daughter of an affluent village rector who encouraged her in her artistic pursuits. In novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma she developed her subtle analysis of contemporary life through depictions of the middle-classes in small towns. Her sharp wit and incisive portraits of ordinary people have given her novels enduring popularity. She died in 1817.
