About this audiobook

In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British "southern campaign." Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

In The Swamp Fox, the first major biography of Marion in more than forty years, John Oller compiles striking evidence to provide a fresh look at Marion, the man, and how he helped save the American Revolution.

After I became obsessed with American history during the amazing experience of reading and listening to Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, I've been trying to fill in the other major holes in my education.

The Swamp Fox is quite good. It gives an entirely different slant on what was going on, at least in some places, during the Revolutionary War. I had no idea.

    I recommend it highly.

i was hoping for some insight as to how he specially adapted his fighting style to the swampland of South carolina, but details during these skirmishes and details on the swampy topography are spurious at best.

The Swamp Fox is an interesting study of the life of Francis Marion, Revolutionary War hero and patriot. To be honest, apparently, there isn't much information to be had about his life either before the war or after, so this is primarily an account of his battles taken from contemporary sources. If you like that kind of thing (and I do), it's a detailed account of the various skirmishes and battles he and his troops were involved in. I remember the old Disney series which I watched religiously, but it is not accurate at all. Marion was a plain and earnest man who loved his country and whose men loved him. The war in the south lasted beyond Yorktown, and the fighting between the Whigs and Tories was brutal. Marion was in the midst of it all. This book is a small window into that war.

Definitely for history buffs. It rolls on and on thru campaigns and marches and I'm not exactly sure which part "saved" the revolution but I'm sure all of it helped. Lots of side digressions but still an interesting read.

Exciting tale of a pivotal Revolutionary War hero in the southern states. Francis Marion is an icon as the Swamp Fox, but little is known to the average person about him. This book more than rectified the situation, detailing how Marion thwarted the planned clampdown on the Southern states. Great story.
