About this audiobook

Claire Connolly is a Sensitive, infected with magic when the Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell. Magic can easily consume and destroy a Sensitive, and if Claire's secret is discovered, she'll be locked into the walled district of Devil's Isle along with every other Paranormal left in the city.

Bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered Claire's secret but refused to turn her in. Together they saved New Orleans from the resurgence of magic that nearly destroyed it. But now a dangerous cult is on the rise, and it will take both Claire and Liam-and magical allies within Devil's Isle's towering walls-to defeat the occult threat before magic corrupts them both.

I thought The Sight was way better than the first novel of this series. The characters have matured quite a bit from the first in the Devil's Isle series. With more action and new challenges overcome in the series, there was plenty that kept me reading. This installment also added a big "holy crap" to the overall plot of the series.Needless to say, I'm excited to move to the third, recently released novel in this series. I'm very interested to see what new hurdles Claire will have to jump over. Her growth as a character stood out to me the most, which is good, considering the entire story is told from her point of view. But make no mistake, you do not miss out on any of the other characters since it's a well-written, first-person, point-of-view. There are many great characters and I have many favorites. The only gripe I have with the book, the only thing that kept me from giving it four-stars, was the battle scene at the end; it fell a little flat for me considering the build-up towards that point. Yet, it was also very appropriate for the way the story headed, so I'm not sure it could have gone any other way.

The second book picks up fairly soon after the first book. Claire is taking lessons to try and control her magic and also learning to be a bounty hunter. Granted I think the bounty hunter lessons is so she can spend time with Liam. The tension in this book is a new group in New Orleans that believes to cleanse the area of all magic everything about magic must be destroyed. Devil’s island, the prisoners, the Containment and anyone that works or supports the system in any way.

I didn’t care for this one as much and I’m not sure why. The plot moved along fairly quickly and there was tension throughout the story but it just seemed that the villain they were fighting wasn’t that great of a tactician for all the people and supplies he managed to rally to his cause. It also might have been that the ending really wasn’t upbeat at all.

Claire Connolly discovers more about her father's secrets and about what's going on while investigating a group who want to eliminate the magical. Interesting stuff and I want to know what is going to happen next. In this series Magic is a contagion and it's very complicated.

The second Devil's Isle novel adds to the tension in a New Orleans that has already been the epicenter of a war when paranormals broke through the Veil. Now, the war is over and the paranormals who were taken as prisoners of war are being house in Devil's Isle - an internment camp. Some were not contained and some humans were infected with the magic and have become Sensitives who are in danger of being overwhelmed by the magic and turned into wraiths. Our heroine Claire is one of those Sensitives who is trying very hard to learn to control the magic and keep from being a wraith. Meanwhile, she is running her business Royal Mercantile which used to sell antiques and now sells things like MREs and duct tape. Her boyfriend Liam is a bounty hunter who is tasked with capturing escaped paranormals and Sensitives. He chooses which bounties he'll go after. The possibility that he might someday have to take Claire to Devil's Isle is the one thing that makes him hesitant to grow his relationship with Claire. But neither of them has much time to focus on their relationship because a man named Ezekiel has been gathering his army of supporters and fanatics to kill all the paranormals and all those who are working in Containment and any other humans they have deemed traitors. There antics began with marches but quickly escalate to bombings and outright battles to destroy Devil's Isle and the paranormals who live there. This was an action-packed story filled with tension. It was also filled with interesting characters. I love Claire who is brave and loyal and often reckless. I like the way Liam balances her. I also liked the variety of people that make up the supporting characters. I can't wait for the third book in September.

*Groan*... I was loving this book until the end. I've really enjoyed Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series from the beginning, which was why I bought the first book in this series last year. The premise was new to me; a diversion from the UF I've read up until now. New Orleans in a post-war era - the war being between humans and paranormals that spilled over from the other side of the 'veil' - is home to a neighborhood-sized prison camp nicknamed 'The Devil's Isle' where POW paranormals are held, as well as humans who ended up being Sensitives: they absorb magic until they become vicious wraiths. The MC, Claire, is a Sensitive hiding in plain site and running one of the few general stores left in New Orleans, until she is found out by a bounty hunter, Liam, who of course doesn't turn her in, but helps her find a way to control her absorption of magic in hopes of staving off turning into a wraith. Of course there are larger issues and goings-on afoot and soon a Scooby gang forms and they fight the bigger fight while proving that we're all more alike than we are different. But Neill makes it fun and she creates a vivid post-war New Orleans with characters that are likeable. Her writing made me care about the outcome, both in the first book and in this one. In almost all ways, in fact, I liked this book better because we were done with the world building and could focus on the plot. A plot centered on a charismatic sociopath gathering people together on a platform of hate and prejudice. A particularly timely plot. But she lost me at the end; she took a rather worn out route in the final climatic battle and I'm disappointed. I think future stories would have had the potential to be much more interesting if she had left well enough alone. Instead, while I'm still definitely going to read book 3, I'm now dreading the trope-tastic angst I'm sure I'll have to slog through before I get to anything good. Ah well - can't win them all.

3.5 starsThe continued story of humans versus magical creatures after a major war. Hope and love, bud on the vine but may never get to bloom.Bigots, haters, complete intolerance, destruction of property, and murders, the story paralleled the turmoil happening in the real world today. Reading about the protests, the anger, the fights, to name calling and bulling, so sadly realistic. The fight for equality, freedom and peace is also very real. I enjoy Ms. Neill'c characters, she write them as complete beings with all the issues. They are likable/hatable for the right reasons and just enough quirk to make them fun. The romantic moments are brief, and semi frustraiting which fits in the world created. The story moves forward in a natural pace, big changes happen. Oh such a sad cliffhanger ending. I can't tell you anything about the happening without spoiling the fun. I am excited to read book 3

Chloe Neill’s THE SIGHT is another great adventure in the Devil's Isle series. Sensitive Claire Connolly and Bounty hunter Liam Quinn work with their friends to bring down a dangerous cult that is against all magic. This urban fantasy takes place in New Orleans. As always, Chloe Neill does an amazing job with her character development. Clare continues to grow and control her magic. I could understand why Clare was upset with Tadji’s help at her store. I like that she recognized why she felt that way and discussed it with Tadji. I like that Clare takes the initiative to see how she can help the inhabitants of Devil’s Isle. The plot was fascinating and full of action. Clare discovers some interesting this about her father. However, she is still left with a lot of questions. Ezekiel and the Reveillon cause a lot of anguish and controversy in this story. There were many twists that kept me engaged throughout the novel.I enjoyed how Liam’s and Clare’s relationship has evolved. He can be very compassionate. I was concerned about what happened at the end of the story and look forward to finding out what comes to pass next in the book. Chloe Neill’s Devil's Isle series is an imaginative and thrilling series that I look forward to continuing reading. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Don't try to jump into THE SIGHT before reading book one, THE VEIL. You will be lost and you won't know the characters or the storyline enough to understand decisions and events in THE SIGHT.While we got a lot of action in THE VEIL, THE SIGHT leans more towards the government and politics of the Devil's Isle series. This made THE SIGHT feel a little slow on the start. It took me a little bit to get back into the story, but by the halfway point, I was in it and happy to be in the story.Claire's family is gone, but her friends are always by her side and they play a big part in her story. In fact, the secondary characters feel just as important to the story and it's growth as Claire and Liam. The slow start to Claire and Liam's relationship is just so frustrating. It will seem like something is happening and then BAM, false alarm. They both REALLY care about the other but completely overthink things. There are valid concerns, but sometimes you just got to jump right in and enjoy yourself a little. Then there is the ending of THE SIGHT that sets things even farther back—which is all I will say about that. I have no clue what will happen to these two, but I have a lot of hope for them. The ending of THE SIGHT leaves us with a LOT of questions about what will happen next. A lot of things are up in the air with the world and the characters. If you're looking for a new urban fantasy series to start this one should be on your list and it's a great time to start reading it.* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good second installment in the Devil's Isle series. I didn't like it quite as much as the first book in the series but it was a solid story that left me quite excited about where things are going. This is a series that really needs to be read in order since this book picks up shortly after the first one left off with all of the familiar characters being a part of the story. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.One of the biggest strengths of this book is the world building. I love the setting of New Orleans even though it is a different city than we have in our world. Claire's lives in a New Orleans that has been changed by magic. Those with magic are sent to Devil's Isle where they are kept away from everyone else. The world building is really well done and I can clearly imagine this city that has been so deeply changed. The characters are great in the series. I love following a great cast of characters in a book series. It is really fun to see how they grow and change over time. This group of characters are really strong. Claire is willing to sacrifice in order to help the people that live in the city. Liam is dedicated to keeping the city safe and has taken Claire under his wing. They both care for each other but try to stay friends because of Claire's magic.I liked the overall plot of this book. I thought that there was quite a bit of excitement in the story as Claire and Liam worked to try to find out who was behind the attack and then in their quest to stop them. They found themselves in a couple of rather intense situations and I actually wasn't sure how things would work out. There was a little twist at the end that really sets the stage for an exciting third book.I would recommend this series to fans of paranormal romance and urban fiction. I can't really make comparisons between this series and Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series since I have only read the first book in that series. I do know that this series is starting very strong and I am really looking forward to seeing where it goes. I received an advance reader edition of this book from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.
