About this audiobook

Six years ago, Eoin "Striker" MacLean endured the greatest betrayal of his life, a disaster that led Robert the Bruce to a crushing defeat and left Eoin without the spirited woman who ruled his heart. Eoin knew that falling in love with Margaret MacDowell-his sworn enemy's daughter-was risky. He promised Bruce that he would keep his fiery bride in the dark about the elite Highland Guard, but he could not predict the dire consequences his secret would have on his young marriage. Nor could he foresee how surrendering to temptation would cripple Bruce's cause, forcing Eoin to blame his wife, and himself for trusting her.
Now, as Bruce prepares to challenge the resistance's remaining strongholds, Eoin finally has his chance for revenge against the woman he once loved so fiercely and her entire clan. But when ferociously independent Margaret reveals a surprise that unites her with Eoin, neither of them will let their love go down without a fight.Contains mature themes.

Monica McCarty

Monica McCarty is the bestselling author of the Highland Guard series, the MacLeods of Skye trilogy, and the Campbell trilogy. Her interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After realizing that her career as a lawyer and her husband’s transitory life as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven, she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. Monica McCarty lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two children.

This Scottish historical romance series has been one of the best romance ones I've ever read. The novel is book #10, and each one gets better and better. The writing flows easily, the characters are developed well, and the historical Scottish setting is researched nicely. I love the strong and independent female leads (again I think this was my favorite) and who doesn't love the rugged and manly Scottish warriors. For historical romance fans. ...deceit and betrayal!Eoin MacLean's decision to become one of Robert the Bruce's strike force team, The Highland Guards, plays havoc with his personal life. But then Eoin wasn't expecting to be captivated by a wild, red headed, bewitching young woman, Margaret MacDowell, whose father's enmity is legend.Happiness is replaced by anger. Eoin's promise to not reveal the secret of the Highland Guards is ripe ground for mistrust between himself and Margaret to erode to the point of no return. Margaret is all that is admirable in the way she seeks to support and understand him, but perceived rejection and frequent snubs worms away at her self confidence. Convinced he has been betrayed by Margaret, Eoin turns his back on their marriage and takes up the mantle of his reported death. Some years later, when he learns that Margaret is about to remarry, Eoin has second thoughts, particularly as his Lazarus reappearance behind the English lines, will cause consternation for Bruce's enemies. What his return causes for Margaret, and the surprises Eoin will face, are very different from the outcome he anticipated, leaving them both shaken and reeling in shock.Filled with surprises, treachery, misunderstandings and heart throb moments, this addition to the Highland Guards series is just as addictive as it's running mates. Once again the midnight candle burned brightly. I couldn't put Eoin and Margaret's story down until I'd reached the very end.A NetGalley ARC

There is something about McCarty's books that just draws you in and refuses to let go. She has a way with her worlds (and words!) that puts you right there, so you're experiencing every heart break, every loving word, every betrayal, and every laugh. Striker was no different. I was engulfed in every word from page one, until the very end. This story was filled with so many trust issues, so much love, and a lot of angst, that it really kept me inrigued for what would happen next. While I felt for the heroine, McCarty also did a great job in making the hero's actions (or inaction) justifiable. It was understanding why he did what he did, but at the same time, I completely understood where the heroine, Maggie, was coming from. In the end, the entire story tied up nicely, and not without a lot of angst first. ;) I highly recommend this book, as well as this entire series, to anyone, no matter whether your a historical fan or not. ABOUT THE BOOK: New York Times bestselling author Monica McCarty continues her Highland Guard series in this tenth steamy historical romance set against the sweeping backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. When Eoin MacLean decides to fight with Robert the Bruce, he knows he will earn the enmity of his new bride’s father, but he doesn’t expect Margaret MacDowell, the spirited girl he’s fallen in love with, to betray him. Blaming her—and himself for trusting her—for the disaster that led to the death of Bruce’s two brothers, Eoin cuts her out of his heart and leaves her behind with no intention of ever coming back. But when Bruce puts him in charge of conquering the troublesome southwest province of Galloway—ruled by his wife’s father—Eoin reconsiders. Especially after he learns that his treacherous wife who thinks him dead plans to remarry. That’s one wedding he has no intention of missing.

We begin with Eoin 'Striker' MacLean and his companions bursting in on a wedding to capture an opposition again Bruce -Dugald MacDowell- who happens to be the brides father, and the bribe also happens to be Striker's wife, she hasn't seen him for 6 yrs. and thought him to be dead. Striker had thought Margaret had betrayed him years ago so he had left her to live her live as she chose. The story then returns to the past, Eoin and Margaret's first meeting, their falling in love and marriage. They're very young and Eoin wants to join Bruce's highland guard and is gone a lot, Margaret is left all on her own with his family who don't treat her very well -they dislike the MacDowell's- and Eoin can't explain where he goes. She is hurt and misunderstandings lead to terrible conclusions and Margaret runs away. This is a wonderful story. It's a second time around which I don't think I've read in an highland romance before. I love the history in the story, the camaraderie in the plot line and Ms. McCarty writes some of the best steamy love scenes to heat up the pages.I highly recommend this book to highland romance lovers every where. My next highland read 'The Rock', I can't wait.
