    Rachel Fisher is devastated when the young man she's loved for years leaves her to date her best friend. Her heart is broken, and she has all but given up on love. Rachel is determined to keep her mind off the pain, and she starts teaching at an Amish school for children with learning disabilities.
    Since his father became ill, Mike Lantz has been overwhelmed with the responsibility of providing for his family and caring for his six-year-old brother, John. When John joins Rachel's class and she learns that his mother is deceased and his father sick, she desperately wants to help the family, even with something as simple as a meal.
    With her parents' old picnic basket, Rachel begins sending food to the Lantz family. As the weeks go by, John's grades start to improve, and the attraction grows between Rachel and Mike. The oldest daughter of Fisher family, Veronica, deals with her grief by baking. Through that endeavor Veronica overcomes her grief and falls in love again. In this installment, Rachael Fisher is shocked and heartbroken when the man she was going out with for four years does the unexpected. Rachael doesn’t think she can go on with her heart in shreds and now with time on her hands what will she do?Rachael becomes a school teacher in a small class that is meant to help kids who need extra help with their various studies. What happens next is a story of a heart mended, faith, family and a woman’s love for a man who thinks no one could ever accept him. Each novel in the series has an element of mystery in it as another piece is revealed as to why the mother in the Fisher family keeps her hope chest locked at all times. Little by little her daughters are finding clues of something that happened their mother’s past, but she refuses to tell them.These Amish stories don’t highlight the Amish life while downplaying the non-Amish and I like that aspect. I like it that characters reflect real people who have to deal with all aspects of life, both good and bad, joy and sorrow, tragedy and triumph. Amy Clipston is a new author for me and I plan on reading more of her books in the future as her stories explore life, faith and family. The next book in the series is titled, The Cherished Quilt, and is available in stores now.

      Rachel is crushed when her long-time boyfriend breaks up with her because he has fallen in love with her best friend. A cousin offers her a teaching position to help her cope with her loss. But that opens up the way to new set of problems. Rachel befriends a little boy, John, who needs some special tutoring, and in the process, she becomes enamored with John’s much older brother, Mike. The brothers have their own problems: their dad is very sick. This novel contains much anguish with all the heartache involved, yet still it is a tale of hope. The author does a very good job of portraying characters in these unhappy circumstances. Readers of the first novel will see a similarity of personalities between the two older sisters, in that it takes their mother to convince them to give their respective beaus another chance. And mom is still guarding a secret from her past. This novel is well written, compelling, and recommended for readers of Amish fiction.

      An emotionally moving heartbreaking story that makes you want to reach into the book and hold both Mike and John to let them know that they will be ok. Rachel finds a picnic basket in the attic which belongs to her Mamm which has a very touching story behind it. She fixes meals for Mike and his younger brother John who lost their Mamm and who’s Daed has kidney disease. Mike is overwhelmed trying to take care of everybody and everything. With Rachel’s persistence and delicious Mike eventually excepts her help. This is a story that is very personal to the author and I for one, think for that reason, The Courtship Basket, is the most outstanding story I have read of Amy’s. I received a complimentary copy (or ARC) of this book from the author via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to write a review, and all options expressed in this review are completely my own.

      I adore this series - I am always sad when Clipston finishes one series, but happy to know that she always has another at the ready. Fortunately, the third book in this series is coming out within a week, so I won't have to wait too long. I really like the youngest sister, Emily, and I know her story is coming next, which just might be the most emotionally intense of the three.

      I admit it, I drug my feet at reading this because it didn't look like there was much murder, mayhem, and mystery. And, I was right. However, I was also very wrong...this book was fantastic.

      The book opens up with Rachel overhearing her boyfriend, David speaking quietly to another woman at her sister Veronica's wedding reception...and of course, Rachel is left with a broken heart and dreams of her own marriage are shattered.

      Trying to rebuild her life without the prospects of marriage on the horizon, Rachel takes a teaching job at the special school. On her first day, she meets John....a good bu who happens to be very troubled and needing attention. Headstrong and stubborn, Rachel sets out to find out what is going on in John's life at home...and she learns the hard way that she was out of line...

      I don't want to spoil the story, so, I encourage you to read this book...and make sure you have a tissue handy.

      The Courtship Basket by Amy Clipston is the second book in An Amish Heirloom Novel series. Rachel Fisher has been dating her boyfriend, David Beiler for the last four years. She is hoping that he will propose soon. Rachel is standing on the front porch when she hears his voice nearby. Rachel goes to investigate and finds David with her friend, Sharon. Evidently, David no longer wishes to see Rachel, but did not know how to tell her (I think telling her would be better than betraying her with her best friend). To help occupy her time, Rachel takes a position as a teaching assistant to her friend, Malinda at the special school. At this school the children receive more one-on-one attention that some children need (especially when in the first grade). Rachel will be working with the new student, John Lantz. John’s father, Raymond is extremely ill and Mike, his brother, is taking care of them. Mike is hoping the school will be beneficial to John. Then there is a misunderstanding on Rachel’s part. To make it up to Mike and his family, Rachel sends a meal to the family in her mother’s picnic basket (the first of many). The picnic basket was special to Rachel’s parents and has a beautiful (and comforting) verse on the underside of the lid (2 Corinthians 1:7). Slowly Rachel starts spending time at the Lantz farm helping John (tutoring him) and gets to know the family (especially Mike). But both of them are hesitant to take their attraction beyond the friendship zone. Then Rachel witnesses a scene (between Mike and a woman) and feels that Mike has betrayed her (no, she does not talk to Mike). Then a tragedy strikes the Lantz family. Just when Mike needs Rachel the most, she has pulled away. Is there a future for Rachel and Mike? Can the basket help bridge the gap and bring them back together?The Courtship Basket is a sweet (though simple) story. It is a little predictable with the typical couple gets together, they have a misunderstanding (just when Mike needs her the most) and then back together again. I was hoping the book would not have the rift section. This would have been a wonderful opportunity for Rachel to step up. It would have helped the growth of her character. The Courtship Basket is well-written (as are all of Amy Clipston’s novels) and easy to read (and has a good pace). I liked the characters in the story as well as the lovely setting of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I liked the school concept portrayed in the book. It is a shame that there are not more schools like this for children. I give The Courtship Basket 4 out of 5 stars (which means I liked it). This is the second book in the series, but you can read it as a stand-alone novel. There are a couple of references to the first book, but they do not hinder the reader’s enjoyment of The Courtship Basket. I look forward to the next book in this series titled The Cherished Quilt.I received a complimentary copy of The Courtship Basket in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.

      Can you imagine dating someone for four years, being at your sister’s wedding, and over hearing him talking to your best friend about their relationship. How do you get through the rest of the day, never mind the rest of your life, such a betrayal, and talk about getting stabbed in the back, this happened to Rachael Fisher.Then we have Mike Lantz, a man devoted to his family, which consists of his Dad and six year old brother. Life has been hard on this family, Mike lost his mother when he was ten, his dad finally found another woman who loved mike, but they lost her when she gave birth to his brother John. Now life is handing them another blow, as his dad’s kidneys are failing and his dad has really lost the will to live.On top of all of this poor John is acting up in school, and Mike moves him to a special Amish school. So our main characters meet, Mike has the world on his shoulders and Rachael has given up on love. They both have strong family ties, and are there for parents and siblings, but boy do they clash, or I should say that Rachael clashes with Mike.This is a sweet story that is told from the heart by the author, and has shared some of her own personal experience in the mode of the story. Come and see if these two can get beyond their own heartache and problems and forge some kind of relationship between them, and include little John.I found this one hard to put down once I turned the first page!I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.

Rachel Fisher and Mike Lantz find each other through Mike's younger brother, John, a new student at an Amish classroom for assisted learning. Rachel is new at teaching, joining her cousin Malinda.Lancaster County, PennsylvaniaMike does woodworking with his uncle and cousin at their Bird-in-Hand business for tourists and is at home with his widowed father and John. Two of his cousins rotate staying with their uncle during his illness while Mike is at work. Rachel and her sister Emily prepare a couple weekly evening meals to take to them. Their older sister Veronica supplies her wonderful homemade pies.Bringing the meals develops into tutoring that both Rachel and John look forward to. Mike and Rachel fall into a routine that adds attention and love for John. The one-on-one at school and extra at home develops his confidence and joy. Invited to Rachel's family home brings Mike, Raymond, and John on outings that are fulfilling and a comfort as they get to know each other.I am looking forward to reading more about the inheritance of the courtship basket in the next story!I liked how Rachel's family had open communication, sharing with each other. Mike has been so busy being busy in his daily work and care that he hasn't seen the value of friendship with others. Instead of an addition, it becomes a supply of warmth and care he didn't realize he needed in his own life.Amy Clipston tells a story so flowing that you come to know the characters and their thoughts as they are revealed to themselves.
