About this audiobook

Law professor Thomas Jackson McMurtrie literally wrote the book on evidence in the state of Alabama. But when a power-hungry colleague uses a recent run-in between McMurtrie and headstrong student Rick Drake to end his career, he is left unsure what to do next.

Meanwhile, a devastating trucking accident in Henshaw, Alabama, leaves a young family dead. Drake, now a fledgling lawyer, takes the case against the freight carrier and soon begins to uncover the truth behind the tragedy that is buried in a tangled web of arson, bribery, and greed. On the eve of the trial and with his case unraveling in the midst of a dangerous cover-up that threatens to silence his star witnesses, Drake realizes that only his estranged mentor, Professor McMurtrie, can help him now.

With everything to lose and only justice to gain, will McMurtrie and Drake overcome bad blood to defeat a ruthless adversary? Can the Professor turn back the clock and recover all that he’s lost?

This 5 star review is for *Robert Bailey's* book The Professor . Most of the reviews here are for a different book of the same title, by Charlotte Bronte. Scribd needs to get that straightened out.

I have listened to thousands of audiobooks in the last decade. Very few have been so gripping that they kept me from doing other things at the same time. This first novel is one of those very few books. I rarely leave reviews here but it is a shame that reviews for another book have been mixed in with the ones for this book. because THIS book, apparently unlike Charlotte bronte's of the same title, Is really fantastic. Another thing I rarely do is go directly on to the next book in a series. But I'm about to do that right now

Thomas Jackson McMurtrie, a law professor at the University of Alabama has just been released from his job because of an incident between him and a head strong law student, Rick Drake. In the meantime a devasting car accident has killed an entire family. Drake and McMurtrie join forces to help the surviving relative seek justice for the accident. (This is a very fast-paced story, but I often felt that the constant termination and forced absence of the material witnesses should have been recognized by law enforcement, not just the lawyers for the defense. There were quite a few coincidences and a few unbelievable cover ups.). That being said, it was a good yarn.

Usually first novels are not impressive. They are rambling, full of clichés and one-dimensional characters. This first novel from Robert Bailey is the exception to all of these. Gripping from the beginning, the story is a fast-paced legal thriller full of good guys, bad guys, and victims.

The characters bring real life onto the pages, from the moment you find out Tom has bladder cancer to the end when you discover what happens to a beloved character. There are no shiny characters here, as is often the case when you have a clear good vs. evil stance. Tom and Rick are both flawed men who are living down a past while they work to build a case, friendship, and business. The bad guys are mean to the core, and you will find yourself rooting for their comeuppance. The story became so stressful for me at times that I had to put it down for a few hours. That is the mark of a good one!! I am happy to say that I found the ending to be very satisfying.

Written by a local lawyer, this definitely has the feeling of early Grisham books, but there is something more pure in this one. Perhaps it is the local flavor that appeals so to me. Perhaps the characters are a bit more mature than Grisham's Mitch McDeere. Whatever the case, I am pleased that Bailey just finished his first draft of the sequel, "Between Black and White." I will definitely be one of the first in line for that one.

    Highly recommended.
