About this audiobook

Young Rhea is a miller’s daughter of low birth, so she is understandably surprised when a mysterious nobleman, Lord Crevan, shows up on her doorstep and proposes marriage. Since commoners don’t turn down lords—no matter how sinister they may seem—Rhea is forced to agree to the engagement.

Lord Crevan demands that Rhea visit his remote manor before their wedding. Upon arrival, she discovers that not only was her betrothed married six times before, but his previous wives are all imprisoned in his enchanted castle. Determined not to share their same fate, Rhea asserts her desire for freedom. In answer, Lord Crevan gives Rhea a series of magical tasks to complete, with the threat “Come back before dawn, or else I’ll marry you.”

With time running out and each task more dangerous and bizarre than the last, Rhea must use her resourcefulness, compassion, and bravery to rally the other wives and defeat the sorcerer before he binds her to him forever.

This was a really fun and quick listen. Though I had to take off a star because I feel this could have done with some more depth. Perhaps a couple of twists, a reveal or maybe some more attention paid to the world-building but other than that, I enjoyed this quite a bit. This gives a cool and fast-paced interpretation of the overwrought "reimagined fairytale" genre.
Oh and the voice actor really brought these characters to life in this audiobook. Stellar job!

Do you hate characters that are written in ways that make no sense? Do you also hate plot devices that leave giant plot holes for why a character had to go through certain trials and tribulations, although those also made no sense? No worries, because this book is so well done, and the character does things logically.

This is not so much a spoiler, but you do have to suspend your disbelief that the main characters parents would not have sought to intervene more.

I enjoyed the characters, the world, and the challenges the main character had to face. For the audiobook version, the narrator is excellent. This is my first time reading anything by this author, and I am so excited to start more of her work.

Wonderful story, fabulous heroine! Kingfisher (Ursula Vernon) has become my favorite new author in 2021. Her take on fairy tales and folklore is original and humorous. Whereas the plot superficially is about an evil lord's proposal to a 15 year-old miller's daughter, Rhea, the story is really about female resistance and resiliency. The wives of Lord K band together to support Rhea as she's put through insane tests, and where the women can't go, valiant hedgehogs plunge in. I loved the descriptions of the hedgehog as it helps Rhea & expresses all manner of things, and Rhea is one of the better teenage protagonists I've encountered in a long time. I'm almost sad this is a stand alone novel!

Enjoyed book twice, once read and once listened. I admit i didn't enjoy it as much the second time but it was very interesting to put into perspective the bits of worldbuilding i better understood after reading other books in wonderworker world in the meantime. Notably i also liked it enough the first time to give it a second go after less than 2y, which for me is nearly unheard of. This book is very interesting and well worth reading especially for advanced fantasy readers who are bored to death by Tolkienisms, fae, more urban werewolves and vampires, elemental magic systems, anything teenage dystopian ultrasimplified, and faux medieval worlds that would've been medieval earth had the writer not been too lazy to actually research history. I guess if you read this one after the clockwork and the paladin series, the Easter eggs are much nicer and the world comes together better. The magic system is easier to follow as well, and it feels much more like hard magic instead of very soft. Very good tension, and the character understanding of the world is super entertaining, especially the inner monologue on cattle raiding.

This book was a lovely tale about strange magic, determination and rather fascinating characters. I'll admit it was not my favourite story from this author, but definitely held my attention and had me wanting to see how the main character got themselves out of the rather difficult situation they found themselves in!

It was a cool retelling, but nothing too exceptional. Quite short, but plenty of details and creepiness. A good book, good narrator, short story.

I love T.Kingfisher, but just couldn't get into this story like others of hers.
This is partly, possibly entirely, because of the narration, Which wasn't terrible but just missed the mark on some of the timing and feel of the story.
Granted, the main character is young, but the narration was delivered as if this is childrens fiction. & it is definitely not.
