About this audiobook

Winner of four utopYA Awards, including Best Book of the Year and Best Sci-Fi Book of the Year

Kricket Hollowell never wished upon stars. She was too busy hiding in plain sight, eluding Chicago’s foster care system. As her eighteenth birthday approaches, she now eagerly anticipates the day she’ll stop running and finally find her place in the world.

That day comes when she meets a young Etharian soldier named Trey Allairis, who has been charged with coming to Earth to find Kricket and transport her to her true home. As danger draws close, he must protect her until she can wield the powers she cannot use on Earth…and he soon realizes that counting a galaxy of stars would be easier than losing this extraordinary girl.

Kyon knows the powerful depths of Kricket’s gifts—gifts he’ll control when he takes her for his tribe and leads the forces that will claim Ethar and destroy his enemies, starting with Trey Allairis. Now, Kricket faces the most difficult choice of her life: whether to wage a battle for survival or a fight for love.

5 stars for the first half of the book. 4 for the rest.
It's well written, fast paced and with a really nice male main protagonist. The heroine is not average but not completely superwoman either. At least not until the last third of the story. That's why I had to take one star down.

I recommend this book for fans of 'Angelfall by Susan Ee' or 'The broken lands by T. A. White'.

I definitely will read the second book.

Kricket has escaped the foster system and is almost 18 and home free.... When twice in the same day two groups of strange men attempt to abduct her. When one group succeeds, she finds herself thrust into a different world and bring sought after by warring factions. As she adapts and learns her way around this strange new world she finds love and respect from some people but threats from others as the factions attempt to gain her compliance and assistance.
Well written and interesting... I'll be reading the next book. ?

I enjoyed this book, however for the first few chapters I was a little iffy on whether I'd like it or not. Kricket is a strong woman but not without her flaws. Anything I didn't like was easily dismissed because the writing was so good. I finished the book pretty quickly and I'm anticipating the next installment.

Under Different starts captured me from the start! It's a story about Kricket Hollowell who might seem like an average young woman, but there's hardly anything average about her. Kricket's had to live under the Radar for some time, going in and out of the foster care system, abuse from Foster parents and moving from one family to the next. She never really knew her parents. She's basically waiting for the moment when she turns eighteen, so she's no longer a ward of the state. But, the universe has other plans in mind for her. Stalked by two divergent groups of men that she has somehow unconsciously summoned, one led by Trey Allairas, a tall built Military type and the other by Kyon Ensin - A big knob knocker of a brute. Kricket is instantly propelled into a world she knew nothing about. Kricket is intelligent, beautiful and small by the Aliens standards. She seemed to completely accept that she was an Alien herself and she handled herself like a pro during the abduction. She always could tell when people were lying to her or telling the truth because of her special gifts. So when they told Kricket her back story, she didn't doubt them for a minute. The story just kicks off once she's taken from Earth to Ethar and I simply couldn't put my Kindle down. I really loved Kricket's ability to talk her way out of anything with so much cheek and gusto. She's one independent lady who's brave and not afraid to push the boundaries. Trey's men have all fallen in love with her. She's their Poster girl. The book ends in a cliffhanger, and now I want to know what's next for Kricket, Trey and Kyon in the next book in the series, Sea of Stars. Jack Murphy

First, what a beautiful cover! I am really digging the underwater themed covers (like Mara Dyer). They add an elegance to covers that is so unique.

I really, REALLY liked this book overall. Kricket isn't your normal character who gets snatched out of her world (literally) and has an emotional breakdown. No, she takes everything that happens to her with stride because she is a survivor and she will do anything to survive. Even though she falls in love and lets her heart get in the way, she doesn't let it make her weak. She still fights the entire time and does whatever she has to do to protect people she cares about. She is crass and sarcastic and generally just DGAF. She knows who she is and does not compromise her character. She is definitely one of my ALL TIME favorite heroines because she is so kick ass.

For a relatively short book (270~ish) pages, it took me fooooreeeeverrr to get through this one (3-4 days). While I really enjoyed the story, I found myself getting bored at times. A few things were predictable, but I didn't mind for the most part. The story drags on in certain places and adds in unnecessary scenes that I felt were there just to add world/character building... which is GREAT but it had me wanting more from other parts of the book. I wanted more Treyyyyyyyyy. He gets so awesome at the end of the book once he stops being dumb and starts feeling with his heart. So romantic. I really hope the next book has more of their romance and gets a little less PG with the romance. Trey sounds so HOT so I want some steam!

This book is full of hotties. Even the evil guys are hot. Kricket is hot, but not in a Barbie doll kind of way. Jax and Wayra are my favorite supporting characters. They sound so handsome and so funny. I love they are so protective of Kricket and are now like her super hot older brothers.

I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series. This is on my list of my top books for this year, so I can't wait to see how the series continues.

    Kricket and Trey
This was a different than expected book. When the different world story line first appeared, and all the different words for things I thought it was pretty hokey. As the story evolved, the different groups in the world plotting against each other with everyone trying to control Kricket I was sucked into this book. I didn't surface until I was nearly finished and realized this is a series - Oh No! (You'd think I would have realized it was a series rather than a stand alone by the Kricket, #1 following the title.) Needless to say, CLIFFHANGER!

I am anxiously awaiting #2 in the series.

I received this free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. 4.5 stars. Wow. I am so glad I found this in my hundreds of books to read through NetGalley and read it! I really, really liked it. Right from the beginning the reader is thrust into Kricket's life and boy does she have a lot of things going on. I also really love Kricket. She is so smart and catches on to things extremely fast. Also, her "ability" of knowing when people are lying is an amazing ability that I wish I had!Trey and his band of merry men are awesome. He is protecting Kricket with his life and it doesn't even faze him. I loved when they first met and Kricket gave him a run for his money! And the way the other guys just fell for her instantly was hilarious. I have a big feeling I'm going to go and get the other books in the series, but I might wait until the third one is available so I don't have to wait for the ending. It's already a struggle not to just dive into the next one, but I will try to hammer out more books I've gotten from NetGalley. Maybe I will find some more gems like "Under Different Stars"!So glad I got this and will definitely be awaiting the finale!

This YA scifi first book of a trilogy has both good and bad elements. When I began, I was getting vertigo from excessive eye-rolling, but I was glad I persevered, because if one approaches this book in the right way it can be quite entertaining.Kricket Hollowell is 17, abnormally tall, blonde, angular, and beautiful, with has violet eyes and long platinum blonde hair that mysteriously can’t be cut. The book begins in Chicago, but it is immediately clear that Kricket is no ordinary Midwestern girl. However, the reasons she stands out in a crowd on Earth are different from those that make her unusual on the planet where she is from, Ethar. There, she is regarded as different for being small, petite, and voluptuous. Not only that, but it turns out, as the daughter of a priestess who took her to Earth to protect her, Kricket has some special powers as well.Needless to say, every guy on Ethar wants to repatriate Kricket and make her his consort. If this sounds like a 60’s over-the-top cult movie, that’s probably because it reads like that as well. Obviously too you have to be in the mood for this kind of reading, because it will either seem incredibly stupid or quite funny.Fortunately, I was in a receptive mood when I read this, and I enjoyed it. It reminded me in a way of a blonde female version of the 1984 John Sayles movie “The Brother From Another Planet,” which is silly and entertaining in a similar manner. (In that movie, a black male alien finds himself on Earth, and is being pursued by alien thugs and bounty hunters. Like the book, the movie has stylized scifi elements in a blend of comedy, pathos, and social commentary.)Evaluation: I thought this book was fun. But your reaction will no doubt depend on whether you regard this book as satire, a serious YA romance or work of science fiction, or a fun blend of all of the above. It does have a lot of five star reviews, so I’m guessing most readers appreciate it even more than I. Thus I will not be alone, presumably, in looking forward to the next installment in the trilogy.
