About this audiobook

When the affluent Lintons of Lenox Hill summon Sarah Brandt to examine their teenage daughter, their worst fear is confirmed: she is with child. The pregnancy is a mystery, however, as the young woman-mentally still a child herself-is never left on her own and denies that any man has ever hurt her. It's a delicate situation, one which casts suspicion on those close to the Lintons, including their beloved minister, the Reverend Oliver Upchurch.
As midwife Sarah Brandt and a reluctant detective sergeant Frank Malloy investigate, fate deals their inquiry a harsh blow. The reverend falls dead during a service, poisoned by cyanide-laced wine in his chalice. Now, they must not only uncover the truth behind the Linton girl's pregnancy but also track down Upchurch's killer before this sordid affair wreaks havoc on more innocent lives.

Nurse/midwife Sarah Brandt is called to the Linton home to examine their teenage daughter, who is developmentally disabled, although that term wasn’t used in 1890s New York. The girl is chaperoned, almost never alone, and only leaves home to go to church with her folks. But Sarah discovers that she is pregnant, more than six months along. How could it have happened?Sarah visits the Linton’s church and meets the charismatic minister, Reverend Oliver Upchurch; she also meets his wife, who everybody believes is quite odd. But pretty soon, the Upchurch is dead and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy, Sarah’s friend and beau (?) is assigned to the case. He doesn’t want Sarah involved with the case, but there’s no stopping Sarah. And she’s able to talk to people who won’t give Malloy the time of day.I’ve run out of superlatives to use about this series, page-turners all. Great characters, riveting plots and good writing. I can’t ask for more.

Sarah Brandt is a midwife who often works in the tenements of turn-of-the-last-century New York. One night she is summoned by the wealthy Linton family to confirm the fear they have that their teenage daughter is pregnant. They don't understand how it could be possible since their daughter is mentally still a child herself and has never been left alone. When Sarah questions the young girl she denies that any man has ever “hurt her”. Sarah asks Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy to help her investigate how this situation is possible. The investigation leads to few suspects with the exception of Mr. Linton himself and the minister of their church, Reverend Oliver Upchurch. In a continuing story line Malloy continues his investigation into the cold case murder of Sarah's husband, Dr. Tom Brandt.

I really enjoy this series. The author does a wonderful job of presenting turn of the century life and the social structure of the time. Her characters are well developed, even if one has not read the previous books in the series. You feel the emotions of the characters and the situations are realistically handled. There are a couple of twists that enhance the story, but the characters are the main focus.

I love the Gaslight series. In this story, Sarah Brandt is called on to examine a young girl who is mentally challenged. She finds out that the girl is pregnant but her parents insist that she is never alone. Her investigation brings her in contact, once again, with Detective Frank Malloy. When she attends church services with the young girl's family, she finds the answers she seeks to part of the mystery but not all. The minister is guilty of inappropriate behavior but not with the young girls in his congregation, the boys. When the minister is poisoned, more questions arise.

The story begins with Sarah determining that a 17-year old girl is pregnant. The mystery rests in how this could have happened, as the girl is "simple-minded" and always under the scrutiny of her parents. The mystery leads to the minister of the local church as even Frank Mallory assists Sarah in her search for the father of the baby. Frank is still investigating the death of Sarah's husband, Tom Brandt. Frank’s search leads him to the new field of psychology and Dr. Freud. Dr. Brandt was studying four women diagnosed with hysteria. The medical discussion in the book is interesting when compared to what is known today. I feel that the characters could have been better developed, and missed the meddling hands of Mrs. Ellsworth.

Murder on Lenox Hill begins with a rather unusual midwifery all for Sarah Brandt, and comes full circle to a form of sexuality that all civilized people will find appalling, leading to a tragic, if still satisfactory, conclusion. As seems typical for this series, the mysteries aren't very mysterious, but the path to the conclusion is a satisfying narrative that entertains from beginning to end. And, for once, Brandt's propensity for putting herself in very stupid situations is missing. Recommended for fans of the Gaslight Mysteries.

Widowed mid-wife and policeman friend investigate the pregnancy of 15 yr old wealthy sheltered mentally challenged girl. This leads them to a church run by a morally corrupt minister who has fooled his congregation. Interesting characterization between the two main characters. I've become a fan of these period genteel murder mysteries.

Sarah Brandt is a midwife to the poor. So imagine her surprise when she gets called to the home of the Linton's in the affluent section of Lenox Hill. She can't image what it is they want to see her for. Soon enough she finds out that their impaired daughter is pregnant - and they have no clue how it could happen. She is never out of their sight. With their permission, Sarah contacts Frank and together they try and find out how this young girl became in the family way. Little did they know the horrible truth they would come to find out about a beloved minister. What turns into a case of rape quickly becomes a quest to find a murderer. Once again the tension exists between Sarah & Frank. Frank's mother still can't stand Sarah. He also continues on in search of Sarah's husbands killer. Brian has entered a school for the deaf and is learning sign language. And Sarah has "adopted" Aggie from the mission as well as hired Maeve as her nanny. I love this series. I enjoy watching the characters grow as the story progresses and hope one day Sarah and Frank can find their way to one another :)

Victoria Thompson has become one of my favorite series writers. This installment in her series with Sarah Brandt and Det. Sgt. Frank Malloy finds Sarah trying to find the person responsible for impregnating a mentally challenged young woman while Frank is trying to find the person responsible for killing Sarah's husband. The second mystery will be stretched over at least another book, but the mystery of the girl's pregnancy is uncovered.

I hated this book. It started out promising, but I quickly guessed the plot, which I found disturbing. I was disappointed because I was hoping to have found a new mystery series. Perhaps I should try another from her.
