About this audiobook
England, 1176. King Henry II has imprisoned his rebellious Queen for attempting to overthrow him. But with her conspirators still at large and a failed assassination attempt on his beautiful mistress, Rosamund Clifford, the King must take action to preserve his reign.
Desperate, Henry turns to the only man he trusts: a man whose skills have saved him once before. Sir Benedict Palmer answers the call, mistakenly believing that his family will remain safe while he attends to his King.
As Palmer races to secure the throne for the King, neither man senses the hand of a brilliant schemer, a mystery figure loyal to Henry’s traitorous Queen who will stop at nothing to see the King defeated.
The Blood of the Fifth Knight is an intricate medieval murder mystery and a worthy sequel to E.M. Powell’s acclaimed historical thriller The Fifth Knight.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Blood of the Fifth Knight brings back the heroes of the exciting first book, The Fifth Knight and starts with Henry II’s penance for the death of Thomas a Becket. As forces continue to want to destroy Henry he learns of a plot against his new favorite – Rosamund Clifford. His marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine is less than happy and Henry is madly in love with fair Rosamund and wants Sir Benedict to find out who is trying to get to him through his mistress. As he rushes off to do Henry’s bidding he leaves his wife, Theodosia alone with their two children. They will soon find that their peaceful life is going to end. This period in English history is rich and full of possibilities for rich storytelling. Henry II and Eleanor were two very strong leaders with a long marriage full of passion in all of its definitions. Ms. Powell has taken one of the more famous (infamous) events in Henry’s reign – the killing of Thomas a Becket – and turned it into a brilliant duo of books with compelling characters and strong plot lines.I picked this book up and I had the world’s hardest time putting it down. I found myself sucked into time and place and by now you know how much I love it when an author’s words have the power to do that. I found myself lost in Benedict and Theodosia’s world for better and often for worse. Reading this book will take you on a wild and crazy ride through Henry’s England and those who wanted to destroy him – his wife among them.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It is now 1176, two years after the penitent Henry II has walked to Canterbury Cathedral, and now he calls for help from Sir Benedict Palmer. Palmer is reluctant to leave Theodosia and his children, but the life of the King's mistress has been threatened and Henry trusts no one else to find the culprit. Plots are woven by many of the King's enemies, but who can be trusted.
Really enjoyed this tale, and liked the characters. Before I read the third in the series sometime in the future I might have to go back and re-read the first two. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Blood of the Fifth Knight continues the story started in The Fifth Knight. Sir Benedict Palmer and former nun,Theodosia are now married and have two children and live a quiet life, far away from the court of Henry II and all of it's intrigue. King Henry has his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine imprisoned for attempting to overthrow him. Rosamund Clifford is the king's mistress and after a failed assassination attempt, King Henry enlists Sir Benedict to protect her. Is Eleanor behind these attempts? Good question and it is up to Sir Benedict to make sure nothing happens to Rosamund. Sir Benedict is ordered by Henry, and is reluctant to leave his wife and children, but feels they would be safer where they are, not with him. Nothing could be further from the truth as an enemy has penetrated the Palmer household and Theodosia and her children are at risk from this new enemy.Even though Sir Benedict does all he can to protect Rosamund, he is not successful and is accused of her death, beaten and imprisoned waiting to be hung. At the same time Theodosia is also imprisoned, along with her children for being in league with the devil. While this is not true of course, it makes for a harrowing course for Benedict and Theodosia. Can they both be acquitted of their supposed crimes? Well that is why you need to read this book, to find out what happens in this medieval thriller. The amount of research that went into this novel is evident in the writing. She has put a voice to the characters, whether real or imagined, that makes this book a page turner. I hope that there will be another book with the continuing of a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
