About this audiobook

The definitive account of one of the greatest Special Forces missions ever, the Raid of Entebbe, by acclaimed military historian Saul David.
On June 27, 1976, an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris was hijacked by a group of Arab and German terrorists who demanded the release of 53 terrorists. The plane was forced to divert to Entebbe, in Uganda--ruled by the murderous despot Idi Amin, who had no interest in intervening.
Days later, Israeli commandos disguised as Ugandan soldiers assaulted the airport terminal, killed all the terrorists, and rescued all the hostages but three who were killed in the crossfire. The assault force suffered just one fatality: its commander, Yoni Netanyahu (brother of Israel's current Prime Minister.) Three of the country's greatest leaders: Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin planned and pulled off one of the most astonishing military operations in history.

Operation Thunderbolt is about the famous "Raid on Entebbe" in 1976 which I only knew about through the movie title, and which I've never seen. So this was hopefully a cultural corrective to learn what happened and why it was important. It's a 'disaster procedural'. Like a crime procedural it moves forward in time, hour by hour, starting with the hijacking in the second chapter. Like a 1970s disaster movie (Towering Inferno) we get to learn more about the passengers and hijackers coming to identify with them as personalities. Thus the structure makes for a compelling and entertaining account. It's strength is describing how the Israeli government responds in the moment - very interesting insights how government leaders operate in a crisis. The author makes a case for this being the first modern counter-terrorist operation. Overall this was an entertaining but serious real-life thriller/history. As a result of the success of Thunderbolt, nations pivoted from negotiating with terrorists to using force, Operation Neptune Spear (the raid that killed Bin Laden) its heir.

A very detailed but also incredibly entertaining book detailing the security failings that led to the high jacking and all the characters involved in this tragedy. Very much an un put down able book that left me only regretting the speed with which it was read!
