About this audiobook
I don't publicly advertise that I'm a mage, but I don't exactly hide it either, and one of the odd things I've learnt over the years is just how much you can get away with if you're blatant enough. Hide something behind smoke and mirrors and make people work to find it, and they'll tear the place down looking for what's there.
Alex Verus is a diviner who can see probable futures-a talent that's gotten him out of many a tough scrape. But this time, he may be in over his head. Alex was once apprenticed to a Dark mage, and in his service he did a lot of things he isn't proud of.
As rumors swirl that his old master is coming back, Alex comes face to face with his misdeeds in the form of a young adept whose only goal is to get revenge. Alex has changed his life for the better, but he's afraid of what his friends-including his apprentice, Luna-will think of his past. But if they're going to put themselves at risk, they need to know exactly what kind of man they're fighting for . . .

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another great sequel in a great series. Can't wait to read Hidden :) I would recommend this series if you're a fan of the Dresden Files or The Iron Druid books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is such a great series! I have a soft spot for the "not-so-perfect" hero. In this installment, Alex's past comes back to exact revenge for the death that occurred while he was still with Richard. The dark times in his history are pushed to the forefront of his mind and when he's forced to share his past actions with his new friends, those relationships are put to the test.
This book has a darker feel than the previous three, but it's a deeply emotional story. I really felt his frustration, his guilt and grief, and all the regret for actions he'd worked so hard to try and forget. Jack does an exceptional job in keeping Alex realistic and human, providing an excellent opportunity for his character to springboard ahead in growth and trust in worthy friends.
As always, the action and writing is top notch! I highly recommend this series! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5ok - Alex is looking after the adepts but being chased by some others who just won't give up. More introspection about his past.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I don't know what it is with this series, but my mind lingers in the world long after the book is done. This one is a hard one -- Verus confronts his past and is hunted for old choices. It really hits that question of can people change? And if so, how long do you hold them accountable for their actions? Lots to think about, and the action does not stop.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Again, I got so into this story that it was hard to put own the book. Verus is back in the fourth installment of this series, along with the friends he has made in the previous books: Luna, Sonder, Anne, and Variam. This time Alex is being hunted for revenge for something that happened while an apprentice to the dark mage, Richard. I would share more, but really don't want to ruin the story.
Jacka has done a great job in the series with building up not only new characters in each installment, but greater character development as the the story line continues. I think it was on the first book I had said I would like to know more of Alex's past, and this book helps fill in so much more detail, even if from a slightly different point of view than expected. And the added 'hint' at the end, that there (hopefully) be at least another book to be released in the future (again - no spoilers!). Definitely the best book so far in this series!! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Alex is being hunted because of a murder he was an accessory to when he was a Dark apprentice. Alex comes clean on his time back then with his friends and not everyone understands his choices at that point in his life. Not all his friends are ready to help him out of this situation as the vigilante gang has Alex in their sights as they have been delivering justice as they see it to all the mages that have killed in the past. A good story that finally shows a light on the past that has only been hinted at. Can’t wait to see more in the series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was another great installment in the Alex Verus Series. This is a series that really does need to be read in order since each book builds on the previous installments. I think that I am liking each book in the series a little more as I work my way through the series and I get to know Alex and the gang better. I worked my way through this book rather quickly because I was eager to see how everything would work out. It really was a very enjoyable listen. At the start of this story, Alex is learning to adjust to life with his two new roommates. He is spending a lot of time with the apprentices and running his shop. Alex's past comes into play and has a big impact on his present in this installment. Alex was an apprentice under a dark mage when he was younger. This is a group of adepts that wish to get revenge for Alex's actions while working with the dark mage.I really liked getting the chance to learn some of Alex's history. I had an idea that life with Richard was less than pleasant but it was very eye-opening to learn how things really were. We actually learn some rather interesting things about several characters that currently play a role in Alex's life. I thought that seeing Alex's past and how he dealt with those seeking revenge really showed what kind of man he has become. Alex wants to do what is right and does not seek to harm anyone but he will do what needs to be done when pushed into it. I really like that Alex is flawed and will cross lines when necessary but tries to be a good guy as much as he can.Gildart Jackson does a fabulous job with this book. He has become the voice of Alex for me and I am so glad that I decided to work my way through this series in audio. This narrator does a great job with all of the character voices and brings a lot of emotion into the story. He has a very pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for hours at a time.I would recommend this series to others. This book tells a very exciting story and is filled with an entire cast of fantastic characters. I can't wait to start working on the next book in this wonderful series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Complicated choices Alex has to make while a group of young adepts are hunting him, he wants to minimise the damage to his friends, but he also has to come to terms with some of his past and deal with Deleo, his former fellow student, and their complicated relationship. This might cost him friends but it will keep many of them alive to keep hating him.I'm enjoying this series, it does deal with nitty gritty messy lives and friendships and how things change from moment to moment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was another good book in the Alex Verus series. I always enjoy these books, they are good investigative urban fantasies and entertaining to read.I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobooks are well done. Jackson sounds exactly like I imagine Alex Verus would. Some of the women’s voices are a bit off sounding, but it’s not bad and all the characters have unique voices. In this book Alex’s past is coming back to haunt him. He did some things he’s not proud off when he was a Black Apprentice and those things are coming to call.We meet a couple interesting new characters, however mostly it’s our old favorites...Luna, Sanders, Anne and Variam. There is some interesting background on Anne and Variam. Luna doesn’t get much page space though and there isn’t a lot of development of her character. As with previous books the main mystery is wrapped up and the next storyline is hinted at.Overall a good continuation of the Alex Verus series. I am never super impressed by these books, but I do enjoy them. There’s not a ton of world-building but there is a good mystery and some interesting characters. I would recommend to those who are looking for a humorous urban fantasy. While this isn’t in my top 5 urban fantasy series, it is a fun one and I enjoy it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a fun ride! Chosen is an intense, emotional, action-packed journey. It tackles some heavy themes and takes our hero to some pretty dark places. But, ultimately, this book made me understand - and love - Alex's character even more. I'm rooting for him.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jacka is really getting into his stride with this book. The relationship between Alex and Luna has always felt very real and is developing nicely now that Alex has taken Luna on as his apprentice. I also really liked how Jacka introduce some of Luna's fellow apprentices and their messy, complicated relationships. I am really looking forward to reading the next instalment in this series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5One trouble with having been apprenticed to a Dark mage is the relative of your victims tracking you down and trying to kill you. Alex Verus tries to resolve things peacefully, but his nemesis won't let him. And his friends may pay the price.
