About this audiobook

Blind man’s bluff…

Wealthy businessman Hartley Bassett has killed himself. There's a typewritten suicide note and three guns lying near his body. But for Perry Mason, that's evidence overkill. He knows there has been trouble in Bassett’s life. His wife wants out, his stepson hates him, an embezzler can't pay him back—and there's the man with a glass eye who hired Perry Mason even before his glass eye went missing and was found in the hands of the deceased.

There are too many suspects and too many lies. But leave it to Mason, his resourceful secretary Della Street, and clever detective Paul Drake to their wits about them and their wiles tucked away, as they piece together the missing parts of this fatal family puzzle.

American detective novel set in the early 20th Century. Perry Mason is a criminal defence lawyer, keen on a bit of unconventional detective work. He is presented with an unusual case - a man reporting a stolen glass eye, who has reason to believe it will be used to frame him for a murder. We are not left disappointed, and it doesn't give away much of the plot to say that the murder is duly committed, and the bulk of the story involves getting to the bottom of it all. This is typical crime/detective genre fiction, which keeps the pages turning. The plot is good, and the ending tied up all the mysteries in a satisfying way without being at all predictable (at least to someone who doesn't have a hidden calling as a detective).

It all started with an eye. Perry Mason gets a weird visitor - someone with an artificial eye who believes that the eye he had lost will be used to frame him. And before he leaves, a second case shows up - a guy that had embezzled almost 4 thousand dollars and a sister ready to pay them off - as fast as she can. Before long a murder is committed, an eye does appear and a woman disappears. And Perry Mason ends up in the middle of it. As usual. This time though most of what he is accused in is not true. He does play a few of his tricks but not the ones that the district attorney believes him to have done. And talking about the DA - this is the novel in which Hamilton Burger is introduced - the DA that will stick around for most of Perry's career and that will become his nemesis through the years. The first meeting between the two men is strange for anyone that knows the story to come - Burger finds Perry honorable and believes that he is not crossing lines. That does not last long of course. And back to the case - it is one of the more straight forward ones - despite the missing witness and her backstory, despite the mounting number of coincidences that start to mount. A man is dead and the killer is obvious if you forget for all that - and Perry gets to prove that. And make both the judge and Burger looks like idiots in the process. Which does not bode well for him in the long term of course but then when had he cared about this. We see a lot less from Paul Drake this time as well (and he does end up almost look like an incompetent guy) or from Della Street (who is there of course and takes a few more risks than she should have but she does not feel like always being there as in previous books. Another good story in a long running and enjoyable series.

A pretty convoluted plot, entertaining but nothing to write home about. Marks the introduction of Hamilton Burger.
