About this audiobook

“High emotional stakes and an intriguing premise make this first entry in Foster’s new trilogy a solid next read for those who enjoyed Pierce Brown’s Red Rising or Veronica Roth’s Divergent."" -- Library Journal

An alternate reality that feels all-too-real, The Rift Uprising is the explosive start to a new trilogy that blurs the line between parallel universes—not to mention YA and adult science fiction—from acclaimed lyricist and storyteller Amy S. Foster.

Seventeen-year-old Ryn Whittaker is a Citadel: an elite, enhanced soldier specially chosen to guard a Rift, a mysterious and dangerous portal to alternate Earths scientists cannot control or close. Trained from the age of fourteen, Ryn can run faster, jump farther, and fight better than a Navy SEAL—which is good when you’re not sure if a laser-wielding Neanderthal or an axe-wielding Viking is trying to make it through the Rift and into your world.

But the teenager’s military conditioning and education have not prepared her for the boy who crosses through—a confused young man, seemingly lost and alone. While there’s an immediate physical attraction, it’s his intelligence and curiosity that throws Ryn off balance. The stranger asks disturbing questions about the Rift that Ryn herself has never considered—questions that lead her to wonder if everything about her life and what she’s been told these past six years has been a lie. Are the Rifts as dangerous as her leaders say? Should her people really try to close them . . . or learn how to travel through them?

So I was actually really excited for this book - the concept is really cool - rifts being created and people/other species coming to earth from different versions of earth. But then the romance happened and that was the most important thing that moved the plot along - the main character just wanted to bang. This was a romance novel with a little sci-fi and I was just not into it. The end got really cool - but that was within the last 50 pages so it did not redeem the book for me.

The world building was lacking - a timeline at the beginning of the book going over the events leading up to the start of the book - kinda lame. Things were more explained as you read, but it just didn't feel integrated well enough. A lot of the exposition was told and not shown and the teenagers were really mad that they couldn't have sex. Not impressed with this one, won't be continuing with the series.

Do we really need another teen heroine super soldier battling endless worlds of potential monsters for a corrupt government bureau? Not to mention the high body count and the perfect boyfriend. With cameos by a pastel highlighted unicorn and a wise reptile man you know is meant to be played by Danny Glover.
If there weren't such a crowed field this might not be a bad book, although the pacing lacks forward momentum, and the understanding of how government agencies work is low for even this genre.

Ryn Whittaker is working at her job as a Citadel, an enhanced soldier who guards the gateway to other Earths, when a young man, Ezra, comes through. She feels they have an immediate attraction and promises to see him again, but his intelligence and curiosity lead him to discover some things about the ARC and the Rift that no one is supposed to know. It's up to Ryn and Ezra to figure out a plan to stop ARC from sending the Citadels on a suicide mission and destroying all the other Earths.
