      This is a very moving book. Narrated by Rachel, it tells of her deep and long-standing friendship with the impulsive Jenny and the diplomatic Mariel. They each have one daughter, born within months of each other, and by the age of six are becoming as close friends as their mothers are.

      Tragedy is foreshadowed in the opening section of the book when Rachel, Mariel and Jenny promise to look after each other's daughters should anything happen to one of them. Sure enough, the unthinkable happens... and then life changes for them all. To say more would be too much of a spoiler.

      Much of the book is set in the Greek island of Santorini, amidst people whom I almost recognised since I have lived for many years in Cyprus. The characters drive the book, and kept me reading often past the time when I wanted to be asleep. Some very moving moments when I had tears in my eyes, and a gradual story of healing and new love.

      Highly recommended. Four and a half stars, really.

      An exploration of grief and recovery as a woman flees her London family to return to the ancestral Greek island that she never knew. There is a touching sympathetic warmth to this novel but its opening is weakened by the knowledge of impending tragedy;n a knowledge derived entirely from the strapline and the synopsis on the cover. It is further diminished by its failure to convey the passage of the decades except in the most literal sense. There is little sense of growth among the characters. For all that, however, it was a pleasant diversion during the act of reading.
