Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5The Witch's Kiss was a promising first novel in the series, and a decent debut, but it really is a novel that you have to stick with. After an intriguing opening chapter, it's a little slow to find its feet and its certainly not a novel for those who prefer their stories to be a bit more action packed. Yet it did get there in the end. As the story unfolds, it did gradually capture my interest as the legend of the King of Hearts and Gwydion's unrequited love was revealed. The novel definitely has the feel of a modern faerie tale, with ancient pacts, enchanted sleeps, a villain with a grisly modus operandi and true love's kiss. While the magic system in this story is only touched upon, it did leave me curious. While Gran's coven seemed to follow strict rules, there was also a sense that magic could also exist as a raw power that could be tapped into. While it could be misused, this also came at a pretty hefty cost as Merry eventually discovered for herself. This left me very curious as to how Merry's understanding of magic will change in subsequent books as her training intensifies. In terms of structure, I did have a few issues. While I liked the dual timeline of the novel, I didn't think that this was as well integrated as it could have been. The legend of the King of Hearts is told in one chunk, taking up several early chapters. After this, the windows to the past take the form of brief flashes. While this does all draw together in the climax, I sometimes felt that these jumps were a little jarring. The novel also sometimes fell foul of telling, rather than showing, as Merry was frequently not present for important events and had to have them related to her at a later date. However, I did really enjoy the climax of the book. The final few chapters were very tense, and I found the ultimate twist of the story to be quite unpredictable. While the book does leave room for a sequel, it did wrap everything up in a very neat way which meant that this part of Merry's adventure could easily be read in isolation. The strongest aspect of this novel was its characters. I love Merry, as it's rare to find a novel that manages to craft a completely believable sixteen year old English girl. If you strip away her magic, Merry is completely ordinary. She makes mistakes, she falls out with her friends, she has crushes on cute boys. I was very quick to get attached to her because she felt so realistic, and I certainly didn't want to see her come to any harm. The supporting cast were also brilliant. I loved the way that Merry's relationship with Leo was fleshed out. Leo is an awesome big brother - loyal, loving and not afraid to tell Merry what she does not want to hear. Gran is also a very strong character, though I was disappointed at how little she appeared in the story. I really hope she features more in the sequel. The only place that the characterisation felt a little weak was in its villains. While Jack is sympathetic, I did feel that a lot of his development occurred off-page and so his sudden attraction to Merry felt abrupt. Gwydion also felt a bit extreme. While you could pity him, his reaction to a broken heart went too far and it took very little to flip his evil switch. All in all, this novel wasn't perfect but it was a intriguing start to the series with some very strong characters. I'm very curious to see where it will all head in the next instalment.

Fun and unique. It held my attention and didn't seem to slow down. I wonder what the second book is about.
