About this audiobook

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of modern classics such as My Sister’s Keeper and Small Great Things weaves a “richly textured and engaging” (The Boston Globe) tale that explores what happens when a young woman’s past—a past she didn’t even know she had—catches up to her just in time to threaten her future.

How do you recover the past when it was never yours to lose?

Delia Hopkins has led a charmed life. Raised in rural New Hampshire by her beloved father, she now has a young daughter, a handsome fiancé, and her own search-and-rescue bloodhound, which she uses to find missing persons. But as Delia plans her wedding, she is plagued by flashbacks of a life she can’t recall…until a policeman knocks on her door, revealing a secret about herself that irrevocably changes her life.

With Vanishing Acts, Jodi Picoult explores how life might not always turn out the way we imagined; how the people we love and trust can suddenly change before our very eyes; how vanished memories can evolve into threat. Featuring characters that “resonate with authenticity” (People), Vanishing Acts masterfully explores a serious topic with understanding, insight, and compassion.

The main story was great. The only reason I kept listening was to hear the end of the story I started listening to. I almost quit several times because the number of side stories was ridiculous! They made half the book boring and irrelevant. I would not recommend.

Not what I expected at all. Too many side stories going on and on and on!!!! What all the father does in jail is just unbelievable at some points. The reading of the main characters lab results went on forever and was pointless to the story. I couldn’t wait for it to end!

Surprisingly this book is too long with unnecessary side stories.

The book was pretty good, just slow. I had to fast forward it a few times. It was an interesting story.

I usually love Jodi's books, but this one was boring or disgusting, depending on which character was the focus. I couldn't even finish it because it just became so monotonous.

Excelente narración. Invita a reflexionar sobre varios temas: las cárceles, el abuso a menores, el amor de los padres, el alcoholismo…. Muy interesante

Typical Jodi Picoult book: interesting plot, a twist or two, passably well researched, and full of cringe worthy writing (e.g., “on the grounds of love “) that completely takes the reader out of the suspension of disbelief and into the mode of wondering if any wine is going to be served with that cheese.

That isn’t to say that I don’t enjoy Jodi Picoult. I’ve read many of her books and recommended her to many others, but after awhile you start to hone in on the pattern, which then begets tedium.

I took a while to get into it but once I did, I could hardly put it down. It certainly doesn’t disappoint. Another remarkable read from Jodi Picoult!

I liked this book, there was a big chunk of andrews prison time that was kinda boring and dragged out but other than that it was good

Excellent story telling. Enjoyed various points of view. Ending was not fully satisfying, thought Delia should’ve been more independent and didn’t like the love triangle aspect, which felt somewhat contrived. I think Fitz would’ve moved on long ago. And Delia didn’t need to jump from one man to another. It made her seem weak.

As usual Jodi Picoult does a very good job of weaving a story out of single strands. It does get a little long winded at times, as always, there is reasoning to it in the end.

The ending helped give this book 3 stars. Otherwise, it would have been less. I got so tired of the prison parts. I know prison is awful, but that is not what I wanted to read in this book. Ruth Ann's story didn't seem to go with the rest of the novel, although I would have liked a book all about her rather than about Delia and her friendship/love with 2 guys and her life with her father, all caught up in lies.

I really enjoyed the romance, what I felt were realistic scenes from the jail, but I did not like the Indian legends. Picoult's books always draw you in.1 like

When I began this book I couldn't put it down. I loved learning about Delia and her search and rescue company with her bloodhound Greta. Delia has a finance named Eric and a wonderful friend named Fritz. They have all grown up together and have been friends forever. You learn early that her Mom was killed in a car crash and it has just been her and her dad and the two of them have been very tight! All of a sudden the police show up and her dad; Andrew is arrested for kidnapping. It was decided that Eric; Delia's fiance who is a lawyer will represent Andrew. Soon the case is moved to Arizona and Delia, Eric, and Fritz go out there to be near Andrew as the case develops. Here is where I loved the book and hated it at the same time! The prison scenes were too graphic and ridiculous at times. Also there was so much Hopi Indian history, that sometimes I just lost what the story was about. As the case developed and Delia was able to meet her Mom, the book definitely kept my interest. I am glad I read the book, but at times I wanted to throw it across the room..... .I guess that's what makes a good book!

Another one that I couldn't put down. Really makes you think about the reasons that a parent kidnapping their own child for what they think is better may or may not be a good solution.

I love Jodi Picoult stories but I felt that she bit off more than she could chew. Parts of this book are extremely vivid but I felt that there were too many parts and sides to the story. I have been listening to most of her books on audio disc because the small print size hurts my eyes. Changing fonts in different parts of the story was also difficult for me. Recently, I have found that I cannot read italics without pain.I do think this is worth reading for the story of the kidnapping of the little girl the effect that it had on her and her father. I was a little overwhelmed by the two parts the one that involved the Hopi culture and the extreme detail of prison life. I have read books about prisons before and I knew that would be extra gritty but I did not want to know the step by step to making crystal meth. I will admit that I did not imagine that there were so many steps. The two stories made me want to get on with book. I made it to the end but think that it could have been divided into different parts. I was very interested in the Hopi culture and it also pulled me away from the main storu.. The prison made my skin crawl and set me to thinking about the inmate suicide rates. The book was a journey but I would never want to reread it. Too gritty, too complex and and too difficult for me.I will continue to search for Jodi Picoult's books on audio discs.

A real page turner for me, I read it in just a couple of days. At the same time, however, I found it tiresome in that it was 1. overly long, 2. constantly changing narrators between the main characters, 3. padded with a lot of cheap philosophizing. Well one of these 'gems ' of wisdom is that no action is all right or all wrong, so while I found it a compelling story, the book as a whole had a few flaws.

I liked this book, but I had a hard time believing two parts of the story line (lawyer seemed like a conflict of interest and wasn't known to be amazing in the courtroom and the love triangle). I thought the book was interesting and the characters had some surprises up their sleeves.

I have read many Jodi Picoult books and this was not one of her best. I did enjoy the story about a man who kidnaps his daughter, moves across the country and assumes a new identity. This is not revealed to the daughter until she is an adult with her own child. I found the characters to be interesting since the story was told from multiple points of view and the situation dealt with some moral questions that some people may not agree on. But I did find the book dragged a little - maybe if it had been not as long, it would have been better.

This is my third Picoult's novel. For 28 years Delia lived with his father who took her away from her alcoholic mother when she was 4 years old. The story goes around with the conflict when his father was brought to trial, while the attourney was Delia's fiance, who was an alcoholic as well. Will his father win the case? As usual Picoult managed to put all the conflict in a proportional and interesting way. She is a diligent writer when it comes to doing her research for the characters and the situation. However, I find this novel is not as good as the other two that I have read because there were too many side lines I felt not necessary to strengthen the story. Some even, I think, was too dramatized. Overall, it is a nice quick light read. The ending was unexpected, which I find nice. If anything, the reader will think what is illegal is not always right.

Fantastic!!! What I love most about Jodi Picoult's books is the fact that she keeps you guessing right to the very end. And it's ALWAYS worth waiting for that final surprise.
