About this audiobook
Benjamin was nine years old in the spring of 1855 when his father met with the accident that changed Benjamin's life. Called home from boarding school, his first sight of his father lying nearly lifeless in the bed petrified him. Gone was the energetic man who had held the family together when Benjamin's mother succumbed to diphtheria. With the courage and strength that had brought the family to the Oregon Territory, Benjamin and his siblings work to build the barn their father had been excitedly planning when he was struck down. Racing with time, Benjamin hopes to give the barn to his father as a gift-only hoping the barn will be completed before his father dies. Award-winning author Avi brings to life a tender story of loss and faith, that will touch the hearts of listeners of all ages.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A good plot and storyline of real life in the olden times. It is a sad and bittersweet ending but with very good morals.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I have generally enjoyed Avi's historical novels, but this one didn't grab me much. It is barely more than a short story, and none of the few characters in it are very three-dimensional.Ben, the youngest of three children of a widower, is the only child sent off to school in a pioneer-era story. But as the book opens, he is brought back home because his father has taken ill, perhaps a severe stroke, and he is to come home to help his older brother and sister. Ben convinces himself that their father, who can't talk, or hardly even move, wants them to build a barn on their property. After convincing his siblings that they need to do so, Ben has a single-minded determination to see the task finished.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A story of love between siblings and their love for their father. After their father has a stroke, Ben finds a way to communicate with his father and determines that they must build the barn that he had intended to do.The details on how Ben, Harrison and Nettie planned and erected the barn are fascinating.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book is about a teenager who goes off to school after his mother has passed away. He is called back home because his father has suffered a stroke, and has become incapacitated. His two siblings and he decide to take on the responsibility of running the family farm and building the barn. The plot is set in Oregon territory in 1855, and it depicts how harsh life in the country could be especially for three teenagers who are forced to take on adult responsibilities. This book is a high interest book is for 9-12 graders, but it is written at a 4th grade reading level.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5An ALA notable book, this would make an excellent silent reading book. I don't think I would do a whole class study of the text, but the story is well worth the read for leisure's sake. The text is simple and clear making it a smooth read for older elementary grade students (4th and 5th grades).
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ben is called back to the homestead from his boarding school because his faher has had a stroke. Ben finds out what this condition means. He persuades his older brother and sister to begin building a barn, hoping that it will reach his father, and give him the will to live. This book is a first person account. We go through the horror and truth of what it means to have a loved one diminished by a stroke.
