About this audiobook
Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.
Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
Editor's Note
Iconic adventure…
In an iconic adventure story that inspired the blockbuster film series, the unassuming Frodo Baggins journeys through Middle Earth to destroy a ring that possesses all-consuming power. Tolkien's remarkably imaginative classic is always worth a read (or a re-read) for those who love stories of good triumphing over evil.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The narrator did a wonderful job bringing the characters of the book to life. It feels like that you're a child and someone it's reading the tale to you. The best audiobook I've listened.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very interesting book, loved it... Amazing storytelling and amazing vocabulary. This book makes you really feel like you live in middle-earth and you can imagine the luscious scenery in the green hills of the Shire. Great reading and great voiceover. Very soothing voice. I found myself falling to sleep many times whilst listening. Overall, great book, great descriptive language and outstanding detail. I highly recommend this book to any J.R.R. Tolkien fan or any fantasy lovers.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Rob Inglis' interpretation of 'The Fellowship' is perfect! What a joy to listen to all the characters, the hobbits, the dwarfs, the elves and men who speak each in their own deep or high voice or in the case of the elves in a chrystal-like pitch. He brings the inner landscape as well as the mountains, the rivers and all the strange creatures of 'nature' to life. He even sings the songs of the ancient bards and the folk tales of the hobbits. Do not ever watch the movie, read the book or/and listen to this audiobook.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I like the book but the narrator voice was a little awkward for me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The book was great but the audio recording is damaged and kept cutting out so I missed some of the story. Disappointing Scribd. Please fix it.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5At some parts the audio cut out. And i coudlnt hear parts of the story. Orherwise an excelu z nareator
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book and well read by Rob Inglis. I would have liked some more variation in the songs (maybe music in the background?) But all in all a great Audiobook which I recommend to anyone who doesn't have time or the interest to read Tolkiens books by themselves. Besides the amazing voice the story always captures me and I couldn't stop listening! I will without a doubt continue with the next two books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well it's a story we all know and love and the challenge is to reclaim our imagination from Peter Jackson's film. The narrator helps as his Boromir is nothing like Sean Bean and his Aragorn is less handsome but altogether fiercer than Viggo Mortenson. So, that's pretty much how I imagined them when I first read it all those aeons ago!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Of course the book us 5 stars! But 4 stars for this particular narration. I just didn't appreciate the singing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The songs in between are somewhat annoying but the reading voice is very fitting, easy to understand and pleasent (even in singing). No unnecessary music to switch during chapters and all together an easily enough to follow book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5J'adore cette histoire et la voix du lecteur était agréable à écouter également.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing narrator. Loved hearing all of those names and places pronounced. Really beautifully spoken.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Five stars for the book in general, but this isn’t nicely read overall, to be honest.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Deserves to be read over and over. Very intriguing, fascinating way of storytelling
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I very much like the narration style and also the songs - nicely fit in. Highly recommended :)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Perfect in every way. Legendary work, absolutely perfect. A must.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read and re-read these books, something like four times, and they never lost their appeal for me. I never donned a cape and elf ears, but I loved this series. Thoroughly engaging. I also thought the film versions were perfectly creditable, so you hard-core nay-sayers just keep it to yourselves.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Definently worth a read. The story is epic, and the characters very interesting.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5as a kid, after reading the hobbit i couldn't wait to get into it. i waded through as best as i could and came to a halt somewhere towards the end of the second book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a great read- the right time in my life. Most people read this when they were young, but I read it in my twenties. It still clicked. Tolkien' descriptions and narrative stuck with me and really drew me into the fantasy world of Middle Earth. A real coming of age book for any reader at any age. Read the books before seeing the movies. I love fantasy and imagination, and Tolkien took me for a real ride in his deep, immersive fantasy world.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The Hobbitt is the best. The rest is a long, dull read except for a handful of pages.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This set I read as a young adult. Although it is extremely complex it is still a great read for young people. It functions as one book but the breaks are at good points which give you a mental rest in between books. Masterful.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great story told by Rob Inglis who brings these fantastic characters to life. Highly recommended listening on a winters night!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The author and the narrator. Equally amazing! Thank you both
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This series has to be the my all time favourite. It is a masterpiece and one that I can re-read when ever I feel like it. The adventure, the characters and the fight sequences are truly remarkable. My favourite characters would have to be Gimli and Legolas as enjoyed reading about their friendship and funny remarks with each other. It is also interesting to note the environmental issues that come across this novel, in particular, the burning of the trees to make war weapons. I believe that the issues that are expressed throughout this book are still relevant today and probably will never be out dated. For me there is no other author like Tolkien he is so descriptive and his imagination is beyond anything that I have ever read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I have yet to actually finish "Return of the King". The story is awesome, but the writing does drag a bit... c'mon, you know you agree with me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Difficult to read with old fashiond language and some parts felt heavy to read, a little bit depressing. But then I read it when I was young. I liked Bilbo a lot better, it was more like a feairy tale.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I almost hesitate to review this book series because it has become so iconic in our culture - especially since the release of the excellent movie adaptatations released in the early 2000s. If you have never read these books, you should be warned that they are not always easy reading. Tolkien was an academic, steeped in old languages and mythology. His use of English can be a little ponderous in places - especially to people who are used to reading light "page turners" written to eigth grade reading level. (8th grade reading level is the publishing industry standard for all but scholarly treatise and high literary fiction.)However, for those who persevere to the end, these books greatly reward the effort. Tolkien used his knowledge of mythology to create a richly imagined world with vivid characters and levels of symbolism that run deep. I have found elements of Norse mythology (notably the Ring of the Niebling - Fall of the Gods) , Saxon mythology (the Elves, ents, Balrog...) , Greek Mythology (the Atlantean legends, and descriptions of the Elven aristocracy - this is more evident in the Ring pre-quel, The Simarylian (SP), Celtic Mythology (the sacred elven homelands in the west, and European mystery schools (The hierachies and initiation levels of the wizards - Gandolf's transformation from "Gray' wizard to 'White' wizard after his battle with his ancient subterrean foe.)Of course, you don't have to see of understand these influences to enjoy the books. For for those who are interested in such things, recognizing some of the influences behind the stories adds a level of appreciation.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5There's nothing I can say about this that won't 1) take up hours and hours of your time, and 2) sound incredibly ( but lovingly! ) biased. So I'll just insist with every crazy bit of me to pick up this set and read it yourself.
