About this audiobook

Gillian Flynn's Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone.

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan's terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan's teenage stepson, doesn't help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

"The Grownup," which originally appeared as "What Do You Do?" in George R. R. Martin's Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world's most original and skilled voices in fiction.

An engaging first person POV, a couple of twists, and an excellent ending.

Too much explanation at the end, but otherwise a satisfyingly unpredictable story from one of the most interesting contemporary fiction writers working right now.

What a great short story. I still can’t decide what is actually the truth. It had me from the first sentence. Loved the characters. Creepy foe sure!

I really did enjoy the story, but for God's sakes ! Why finish it right at that moment? I want to know more! I need to know! I need to know about Miles and Susan and if the main chatacter even survives the night.

I’m not a writer but I would believe in so little pages that it would be very difficult to write a character and her story to make the audience listen and want to know more. Even though this was very short, Gillian Flynn sure knows how to do just that. Her main character was pretty funny-in my opinion- and was so rough around the edges.

I feel like this story had an underlying theme of karma and redemption. The main character does shady stuff and it was bound to bite back at her. I also really enjoy the ominous ending. Makes me wonder what happened.

I think this short story would be good to read during Halloween.

The way Gillian pulls you in to make you feel as though you're part of the story and keeps you on the edge of your seat is my favorite attribute to all her stories. Nicely written

Not my favorite book by her. A quick read. You can read it in about an hr and a half. Wish it had more substance to it.

Meh. It is a short story and I think that is best.

Short and intriguing. Leaves a lot of room for the imagination. If you don't like cliffhangers this is not for you

I believe ”Gone Girl” was so unique, the story and characters were great. But Ms Fynn’s writing was a freshness I've never seen. It hit me like a new style, a mind that took the other path. So, I read her other two books and thought, ok these are good, but she's grown since then. I've been waiting over a year for a new novel by Gillian Flynn, and I get; ”The Grown up.” It was Flash Fiction or a novella. It was good, ok, but its like she got stuck in the plot and cut and pasted, what she had into an, alas, fair short story. Get on that laptop Gillian and get those genius juices flowing. I still love you though. Rewrite the grownup.
