About this audiobook

For John Carver, a simple Celtic wood worker, life is a struggle to feed his family. Then one summer day, as he walks past a near-dead alder tree, lightning strikes. With the shattered tree lying all around him, Carver pulls himself up and decides to make the best of it—he takes the usable pieces to his workshop. From the shards of that dead tree John creates three boxes. Then the unexplained happens—shortly after handling one of them, John’s touch brings his young son back from the brink of death. When the second box demonstrates an opposite tendency, toward the dark side, Carver is terrified that witch-hunters will learn of the boxes and their mystical powers. Eager to rid himself of the artifacts and desperate for money, he sells the three boxes. As they are taken by three very different buyers—a common Englishman, a worldly merchant and a bishop—John feels a foreboding about the future. From the 13th century, the boxes travel the world, eventually drawing the attention of two rival organizations, each with very different motives and methods for gaining what they want. Reminiscent of The Red Violin in scope, this historical novel follows the three boxes to the 21st century and confrontation between the two factions. The Woodcarver’s Secret is the prequel and companion novel to Connie Shelton’s Samantha Sweet paranormal mystery series.

Connie Shelton

Connie Shelton has been writing for more than twenty years and has taught writing (both fiction and nonfiction) since 2001. She is the author of the Charlie Parker mystery series and has been a contributor to several anthologies, including Chicken Soup For the Writer's Soul. "My husband and I love to do adventures. He flew helicopters for 35 years, a career that I've borrowed from in my Charlie Parker mysteries. We have traveled quite a lot and now divide our time between the American Southwest and a place on the Sea of Cortez. For relaxation I love art -- painting and drawing can completely consume me. I also really enjoy cooking, with whatever ingredients I find in whatever country we are in at the moment. We walk every day and love watching and photographing wildlife."

To anyone who has read the Samanthat Sweet books this is a must. I would recommend reading at least one of them before this. The book would still be enjoyable without but having read Samantha Sweet this one is so much more meaningful. It is a brilliant book describing the history of a carved box from making to the present day. Conne Shelton has an amazing ability to carry the reader with her through history and many real events, and invented ones. It is very different in feel from the Samatha Sweet books which are cozy reads which this is not. At times it is quite scary, especially the Spanish Inqusition part. It should appeal to many different types of reader from cozy mysteries to histrorical book readers. She also has an ability to evoke the hardships of past times while not making them a big part of the story. The people are much more important yet there way of life is equally important to the story moving forward. Past times don't seem so harsh when you remember that the people of the time knew nothing better. The story starts in ancient Ireland and finishes in modern day Washington via a long and very interesting path through history.
