About this audiobook

In bestseller Elin Hilderbrand's first Christmas novel, a family gathers on Nantucket for a holiday filled with surprises.

Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket's Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. Patrick, the eldest, is a hedge fund manager with a guilty conscience. Kevin, a bartender, is secretly sleeping with a French housekeeper named Isabelle. Ava, a school teacher, is finally dating the perfect guy but can't get him to commit. And Bart, the youngest and only child of Kelley's second marriage to Mitzi, has recently shocked everyone by joining the Marines.

As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. But when he walks in on Mitzi kissing Santa Claus (or the guy who's playing Santa at the inn's annual party), utter chaos descends. With the three older children each reeling in their own dramas and Bart unreachable in Afghanistan, it might be up to Kelley's ex-wife, nightly news anchor Margaret Quinn, to save Christmas at the Winter Street Inn.

Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

Author

Elin Hilderbrand

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket, has three children and is the author of 27 novels, including SUMMER OF ‘69.  Elin met Dottie in the spring of 2017 at the annual Post & Courier luncheon in Charleston and Elin says, “It was love at first sight.” The two authors proceeded to meet on Nantucket every chance they got and they texted and emailed non-stop. They dreamed of doing a joint cooking show called “Cook the Books,” where they would invite a third author on to make a signature dish for each episode. They also talked about a cookbook called “The Southern Belle and the Gray Lady.” Elin’s summer of 2020 novel, 28 Summers, is dedicated to Dottie and Dottie makes a cameo appearance in Elin’s summer of 2021 novel, Golden Girl. “I will never again have a writer friend like Dottie,” Elin says. “Those of you who knew her understand what I mean, and those of you who didn’t will just have to trust me. They broke the mold.”

Starting the holiday spirit early this year. I have had these forever and just haven’t gotten to them. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, half on audio and half in print as I have had to do a lot of driving in the past two days. Looking forward to continuing the story in the next one. 4🌟

Not too much to say about this one other than it's a cute Christmas read. Entirely unrealistic but it's definitely fun and quick. One to lose yourself in and just enjoy. I definitely enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I'll be seeking out the next in the series. However, for the purpose it provides, fun escapism around Christmas-time, it does the trick.

Loved the idea of this book more than the reality. I found the characters to all be mostly shallow. I am drawn more to stories where I have a connection to the characters in some way. Always found the ending unsatisfactory.

Initially, I wasn't sure I'd bother reading all three books (my book club chose the third as the January book and I had to read the first two of the series before that, clearly), even though they're short, but the book did get more interesting and it IS short, so it didn't take long to read. I still hope the other two books in the series are better, though.

Story offers improbably fun Christmas reading, featuring an over-the-top richy-rich spending, brand name dropping plot.Still, the family dynamics keep readers wondering if it will all end predictably - thankfully there are some odd surprises.

What an appropriate time to read this story from Elin Hilderbrand. There's just something comforting reading a book taking place at Christmas during the actual Christmas season although my Christmas was not as crazy, chaotic or dramatic as this family at the Inn on Winter street. I'd actually rate it a 3 1/2. It's a pretty good read but I must say I have enjoyed her beach/summery books more. Although, Its a shorter book, it took me a longer time than usual to read it, I didn't devour it the same as some of her other books. I will definitely read the next segment "Winter stroll". This one seemed to end in the middle of the story with so many questions unanswered.

I have no idea what took me so long to read one of Elin Hilderbrand's novels. This time of year I purposely read holiday books and I ended up with Winter Street. Yay! It was wonderful. The family is a normal family by today's standards. Adult children with their adult lives. Marriage and divorce. Love. Secrets. I'm already looking for the next one in the series.

I love the Winter Street series! So many lovable and relatable characters! The first of the book, already so packed with twists and turns for the family and friends had you loving and rooting for everyone, even the ones you love to hate. Reading one of the Winter Street Series books,(or all of them!) each winter has definitely become an annual tradition for me.

Very fun Christmas story. It's pretty much a novella because it doesn't go too deep into what is happening beyond Christmas. This story covers 3 days in the lives of the Quinn family. Some characters you get to know a little and some are just there on the surface. It's not where you will get attached to the characters. But it will entertain you. Yes, it does leave questions at the end but that's okay. I enjoy a good Hilderbtrand book. If you want a quick read to take you away from your family at Christmas pick this one up and realize your life isn't so bad.

The Quinn family celebrate Christmas at the Family Inn, Winter Street, with a lavish party for everyone in Nantucket. Only problem this year is that Mitzi, Kelly's second wife leaves him on Christmas Eve. Patrick, the oldest is in trouble at work, Kevin's girlfriend is pregnant, Ava's boyfriend leaves to celebrate Christmas with his family and ex-girlfriend who is recently divorced and Bart, the youngest has recently been sent to Afghanistan. Margaret, Kelly's first wife, heads to Nantucket to support the family in the event that Bart has been taken captive. Lots of laughs and celebrations. A great read to put you in the mood for Christmas. A wide open ending occurs, leaving you hoping that there is another story involving the Quinn family.

A huge Elin Hilderbrand fan, I was somewhat disappointed with this one. I found the characters held very disappointing lack of personality. It was comical and an easy read, and for that, it was worth the read, but if you want something deeply emotional, this isn't your book.

Writing tales about dysfunctional families seems to be quite common, and the norm is that it doesn’t usually go so well, so I was very pleasantly surprised when this dysfunctional family was able to pull together as Christmas neared. It seems like everyone in this not-so-tightly knit family is dealing with a crisis. But as the saying goes, all roads lead home, and what happens when they get there is likely to surprise you. Well-written with really interesting characters, this storyline is intriguing and well thought-out. But be sure you have the next book in the series: you will want to continue on with the story.

Nice Christmas story about a blended family. Husband catches 2nd wife with friend, three kids from the first marriage are all converging on home with their problems, son from 2nd marriage is MIA in the marines, and the first wife comes back to the homefront for support. Told in each persons' voice, the story of the 3 days over Christmas is told nicely.

I am unfamiliar with Hilderbrand's other novels, but have often seen the beautiful, beach-y covers on shelves. This novel, while set in Nantucket, is taking place at Christmas. With the alternating narrative voices, I felt as though some of the story was given short shrift, but as Christmas Day approached, the various characters started filling in many of the blanks I felt at the beginning of the novel. This was an okay story, most of which can be figured out from the synopsis at Amazon or BN, of a hugely dysfunctional family that in the end, work together and support one another.

Warning: this is not a 'feel good' Christmas novel.Elin Hilderbrand's 'Winter Street' seems to be written for the romance series market. This offering introduces the Quinn family of Nantucket. Divorced parents (inn owner and evening news anchor) and four adult children (disgraced broker, bartender, music teacher, and Marine). And each life has its own drama. Will the broker face charges for insider trading? Will his wife stand by him? Will the bartender grow up and deal with his responsibilities? Will the teacher find true love? Will the Marine survive Afghanistan? Will the parents reunite? Will the inn be sold? But keep in mind that this is a series, don't expect a resolution in the first offering. If I sound jaded, it's because this type of book is too much the 'would you like fries with this?' offering. I was disappointed that so many plots were left hanging at the end of the book.On the other hand, if that doesn't bother you, read on. The characters are pleasant enough. All are, of course, attractive but troubled. The setting is pleasant. I think I mean 'generic' on all fronts.

Dysfunction. Every family has it, every family tries to pretend they don't.Winter Streetby Elin Hilderbrand takes place at a family owned Inn on Nantucket. It is very fluffy, except for when it's not. The Quinn family is Irish and tough and has been through battles big and small. There have been challenges and joys, and marriages and divorces. This is their story, a story of a Christmas when one son of one father and one mother has been deployed to a place where brutalities happen every day. The other children of one man and one woman are doing the best they can to be happy, and making choices, some good, some bad. In other words.. they are human. Almost devastatingly so. This is a good story, but not particularly uplifting. There are happy moments and sad ones. The ending is...well, read it and see. I don't want to give it away. All in all a likable book about a mostly likable family. I'm glad I read it.

I really enjoyed this book by Elin Hilderbrand. All her books are set on Nantucket, but this was the first one that took place at Christmastime. It wasn't overly sentimental like many Christmas books. I loved the main character, Ava, whose boyfriend didn't want to commit to her. But there's another, better romance on the horizon. My only (minor) complaint was that the ending was a little sad.

Winter House by Elin Hilderbrand (audio version) was disappointing to me. Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors so I am not going to stop reading her books. First of all, there were too many characters, the narration went from one to another and I had to stop and figure which character was which. That is not to say that it wasn’t entertaining. I really craved more depth and unless you write a very long book, that is just not possible. I listened to the audio version and thought the reader, Erin Bennett was excellent and would love to listen to more books that she has read. This book felt like it was going too fast with the characters whirling around and around. The family is dysfunctional and it seemed to me that all of them had great faults. But what disturbed me the most is that most of the family seemed to be living in their own little rich world, never venturing out to see people less fortunate. With the naming the jewelry designers and other things, an air of snobbery was created. I did like the French maid. Maybe it was because Isabelle know that you must earn your way through life. Also the villain, Mitzie was vegan and interested in new age ideas. I am a vegetarian and when I heard the dialogue about her ideas, there an element of scorn. Not just towards Mitzie but towards other ideas. The Christmas meal was painful for me when there was such a big emphasis on finally having meat for Christmas. I would have preferred the bad character being attacked for her actions that drove the family apart like not disciplining Bart the youngest son than attacking her lifestyle.Yet, the book did keep my interest. I don’t want to go into the plot because there were so many characters. I am hoping that the next book by Elin Hilderbrand will be better. I wonder if this was a Christmas project that was rushed so it could be done in time for Christmas.

Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street is a story of the highly dysfunctional Quinn family, a family of four children, coming home for Christmas in Nantucket in a non-traditional way. (2.5 Stars)

Rather than summarizing the story, want to get straight away to the issues. Since I have been in the hotel business most of my career, a former innkeeper, and a consultant for boutique hotels and inns, and business planning for investment vacation real estate properties, was hoping for a heartwarming story with interesting characters coming to the inn (as always a story there), as this was the main reason for buying the audiobook, as my favorite guests are European travelers. Donna Ball's books and The Ladybug Farm series--a perfect example of good B&B stories.

However, there was not much in the way of inn operations, or guests, as the book was focused on this family and all their drama and problems, without a lot of depth nor interesting characters. It started out a little funny; however, sadly disappointed. I gave her last book 2 stars, and pushing it with a 2.5 stars this time, just because it is Christmas and is set in Nantucket.

Having read all sixteen of Hilderbrand’s books, as loved her older books, as checked back on Goodreads as to when this began to change. Either my reading interests have drastically changed (which could be), or she has completely changed her style, since around 2010, starting with The Island and downhill since. The good ones are from 2002-2009 (please go back to this). I keep reading thinking it will go back to the old ways; however, her books are no longer captivating me or grabbing me, nor am I invested in any of the characters. (I did enjoy her last two short novellas).

I will give 2015 one more shot before closing this door. If you like more of a soap opera drama, you may enjoy; however, I enjoy more substance and complex plot planning. On a side note, I am sensing a little of the same with Nancy Thayer, another Nantucket author, as have read all her books, as well and not the same over the last few years; and both started around the same time with the change.

If you are one of the older fans, you may be able to relate as have seen a few other reviewers sharing the opinion.

Read this if you are in that bah-humbug state of mind about Christmas and all the hoopla about getting ready for the family; it will help. There is nothing quite like reading about another persons dysfunctional family drama to make you think “well we’re not that bad!” I was laughing and having those warm fuzzy feelings come back just a few chapters into the holidays with the Quinn’s. Kelly Quinn owns the Nantucket Winter Street Inn, which has always put on the Christmas bash of the year, with all the bells and whistles, including Santa Claus. But this year the Inn has been losing business and he is going broke trying to keep it open; and then he finds his wife Mitzi, the person who pulls Christmas together for everyone, in a lip-lock with Santa! Poor Kelly, his wife is cheating with Santa, his grown kids are a hot mess, and his youngest has joined the Marines and no one has heard from him since he shipped out. Not even Kelly’s ex wife, who is a world famous Newscaster, can track him down. This short novel is fast paced, told from different points of view, and just needs a cup of hot chocolate to make it a fun holiday read. 4 stars
