      In contrast to other novels I've read by Elizabeth Camden, I wasn't sure I was going to like this one or stick with it -- BUT, I should have known! By a few chapters in, I was captured (and had gotten past what felt to me like awkward caricatures), characters had become real and won my affection, and I had a hard time putting the book down.

      Romanian mysteries, royal intrigue, bits of history totally new to me; development of early modern machines and character; roses, night blooming jasmine, and perfumery; clean romantic puzzlements, and much more made this a fun and satisfying read!

      *Please note: (Spoiler/trigger warning) While told gently and extremely carefully and well, with very little actual description, a despicable attack on a woman during [Eastern European] war is alluded to and serves as an important part of this story. Depression and suicide are also mentioned as a result of this, as are healing and discovering purpose and hope after trauma and/or shame. Parents may wish to read or listen to evaluate.

      What I loved most about this novel, was the characters in them. The plot was good, but it’s really the characters that made the book twice as enjoyable to read. Libby is a great character with an awful secret - although I thought it was most definitely a secret problem that can be fixed, so I’m not sure why it wasn’t encouraged for her to try to solve this issue. Perhaps because she’s tried so hard to do so with results, she just gave up - what surprised me was I really thought Michael would do something about it, but he didn’t. (This whole thing will make sense once you read the book). I thought Libby and Michael were such a wonderful couple! from the start they had a little spark and it eventually grew to something more but it was just so nice to read them both. Some of the things Michael says to Libbey throughout the book were so nice I had to sit back and reread them again. They were most definitely very memorable quotes. My favorite scene, had to be when they were stranded in the rain.The plot was really good and interesting. I was very glad of Mirela’s outcome because of her past story. What got me all riled up was Regina. Oh argh. She got me so mad and I can’t believe she did what she did. (Which just goes to show you how involved in the plot I was while reading this book). I also liked the perfume parts of the book. That was interesting and didn’t think someone like Michael would be into that sort of thing. It’s definitely something you don’t see in most novels out there.Definitely recommended for those who want a light romantic read. The romance was brilliant, the plot very nice and interesting to follow, most importantly it had very memorable characters that made the book absolutely fantastic.

      I love how Camden does her characters and romance. She always incorporates unique character traits and interesting backgrounds that are rarely seen in other fictional works. This book was no different. Michael’s mysterious background in Romania and Libby’s unique obstacle trait I have not seen in Christian historical romance before or in other fiction for that matter. I loved seeing these two come together romantically with their one-of-a-kind personalities and backgrounds. There’s a tenderness present in Camden’s romances that pulls the reader’s emotions in hard. I always know I’ll finish a work of hers with a smile on my face and a twinge in my heart. Libby and Michael balance each other out well, both providing a confident love that gives the other a focus outside their main problems.I do have a bit of a problem with the leading premise for this novel, though. Knowing the historical time period and the attitudes thereof, it seems highly unlikely that the law would let what is in essence a squatter immigrant family dwell in a home while the current family is forced to find other lodgings. At least, not until everything is completely settled in court since said squatter family claims family inheritance of the home.Despite a somewhat unbelievable start to the novel, everything else that follows was a treat to read. I enjoyed the characters and romance, and they are the heart of the novel. It’s been interesting visiting Camden’s earlier works to see what her writing was like back then. I think it’s safe to say that she was just as good telling a fantastic romantic yard back then as she is nowadays. Recommended for readers of Christian historical romance; you’ll enjoy it to the hilt.
