J.A. Johnstone

Being the all-around assistant, typist, researcher, and fact checker to one of the most popular western authors of all time, J.A. Johnstone learned from the master, Uncle William W. Johnstone.     He began tutoring J.A. at an early age. After-school hours were often spent retyping manuscripts or researching his massive American Western History library as well as the more modern wars and conflicts. J.A. worked hard—and learned.   “Every day with Bill was an adventure story in itself. Bill taught me all he could about the art of storytelling. ‘Keep the historical facts accurate,’ he would say. ‘Remember the readers, and as your grandfather once told me, I am telling you now: be the best J.A. Johnstone you can be.’”

Title: The Devil’s Badlands (The Loner #2)Author: J. A. JohnstonePages: 214Year: 2010Publisher: PinnacleMy rating: 5 out of 5 stars. What an exciting sequel to the first book, The Loner, starring Conrad Browning! Conrad is a young man who is learning very quickly the ways of the west. He knows that one must be fast with thought and action. He has learned a lot from his father, Frank Morgan, who is the star in the Johnstone series The Last Gunfighter.Conrad in this novel is out to unveil the culprit who masterminded the murder of his wife, Rebel. While on his way home, after recovering from wounds received in a prior altercation, Conrad steps right into the middle of a range war. Oh, he didn’t go looking for it but when he sees people being bushwhacked by a gang, he can’t simply ride on as if nothing is wrong. In doing so, Conrad meets a family of Scottish descent known as MacTavish. Now Conrad is known to very few as Kid Morgan. Most know him as an Easterner with no knowledge of frontier life. But Conrad has learned fast and is learning more all the time. When Conrad goes to visit the site where his wife is buried, after meeting the MacTavish family, he comes across flowers at his wife’s grave. Who put them there? Conrad’s discovery of the flowers is what sets his feet on the path to finding out who masterminded the murder of Rebel, but it also somehow includes fighting with the MacTavish family in their range war too.I thought this sequel was very entertaining. I loved how Conrad had to decide if people were going to know him as Kid Morgan or Conrad Browning. The journey in finding out who masterminded Rebel’s demise was great, and who it turned out to be surprised me! There are twists and turns of the plot and the action doesn’t let up until the very end!Now I am on to book three in the Loner Series titled Dead Man’s Gold where the old west action awaits! Enjoy the Loner Series and the main character Conrad Browning, or Kid Morgan as some come to call him.Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.
