Janet Begay has a very mixed heritage — a human father and a mother from Beneath. This gives her both Earth and Beneath powers. She returns to Magellan to finally come to terms to this conflict within herself. It will take the efforts of all the friends she has made to defeat her evil mother. Looking forward to the next book.

I have mixed feelings about this book, don't get me wrong I enjoyed it - I stayed up til 2 am reading it, which is why it deserves 4 stars. But some things niggled. It tended to be a bit too descriptive in some places: the protagonist was uber-powerful which seemed too easy, and her relationship with her boyfriend didn't seem healthy to me, even though I liked him.

This was a quick read for me. The main character could be a little annoying at times, but overall she was a well developed character. I enjoyed the other characters and the mystery surrounding one of them. The ending was a little vague, but understandable since this is a series.

I had a hard time rating this book. I really liked the mystery and the characters. Mick and Coyote are my favorites. Both stole the story from the main character Janet (IMHO) she became predictable towards the end. I have hope for her in the next book, she started out very intriguing. The mystery, where is a young girl and who is killing women ? It was going so well, twisted and mixed trails had me thoroughly interested, till BAM it was solved. It seemed rushed and anti-climatic for all the build-up. The sex was well placed in the beginning of the story and seemed a bit out of place towards the end as well, forced into the story ? It just did not feel right with what was happening to the characters. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this story and loved the characters, for 3/4 of the book. It was the last 1/4 that dropped the ball for me. Too rushed of a ending ! I still think it s a worthy read, it had an interesting plot, well written characters and was unique. I have purchased the second book and can't wait to revisit these characters and see if their tale develops at a better pace.

This is the first book in the Stormwalker series. The fifth book in that series will be titled, Dreamwalker, and is expected to release in June 2015. This was an action packed paranormal romance with a story that was incredibly flawed.I listened to this on audiobook and it was okay. It was nothing spectacular but the narrator did a decent job distinguishing between character voices.Janet Begay is a Stormwalker whose mother is a Goddess from Beneath. Janet moves back to her hometown to face her mother once and for all and to investigate the disappearance of a young woman. Right after her arrival things start to get tricky. Janet is being attacked by Skinwalkers and her ex-boyfriend (the mysterious Mick) shows up to help. Janet hasn’t seen Mick in five years but is still drawn to him. Together they try and track down the missing woman, all the while dodging evil attacks from Janet’s mother.I was intrigued by the idea of a character, Janet, who can harness the power of storms. The idea ended up being cooler than what was actually done in this book. I actually struggled to finish this book, it was just so ridiculous. Considering I was listening to this as an audiobook while I languished in traffic, that’s saying something...I hardly ever stop reading an audiobook. There were a lot of problems with this story and a lot of things I didn't enjoy about the story. My main issue was the relationship between Mick and Janet, which left a lot to be desired. Pretty much if they have any problems they just have sex and then everything is good until they have problems again. So silly. Sex is a huge part of this book, Janet is pretty much obsessed with sex. Which I don’t have a problem with...except the sex scenes were very poorly done. They are boring and not at all creative. I feel like if you are going to make a book that features sex, you should be able to write about it in a way that is engaging.Even sillier is the part where Mick tells Janet that he's not sleeping with her again until she decides that she really wants Mick in her life...then...you guessed it...a couple chapters later they get pissed at each other and have sex. Huge eye roll here. When Mick reveals his big secret Janet gets all whiny and immature about it all. I swear she acted like a two year old throwing a tantrum. I mean is she seriously that blind that she didn’t see something was going on with Mick? I understand she is pissed about the secret thing, however she is the one who lets this guy walk all over her without ever questioning his motives. In general Janet's character is extremely immature and makes a lot of bad decisions throughout the book. I hate dumb heroines. There was some good action scenes in here and the fight scenes are decently done. However, there were also a lot of parts where things don't quite make sense or are over-explained. There is some awkward dialogue as well. Overall this was a paranormal romance (PNR) that epitomizes a lot of things I hate about poorly done PNR. There is an abusive relationship (that is pushed as being a loving one), a stupid and dense heroine, lots of sex that is poorly done, and an underdeveloped world. The book does have a bit of an urban fantasy feel to it because there is a lot of action, but there is also a lot of relationship drama and sex that reminded me more of a PNR. I pretty much detested this book and won't be reading any more of this series.

Janet Begay, a Navajo Stormwalker through her father's family, is able to command the power of storms though powerful magic. She is also half-goddess, thanks to her estranged mother, a goddess herself trapped in the mystical realm of Beneath. Janet travels to the Southwestern town of Magellan to investigate the disappearance of the police chief's daughter. Magellan is located near several vortexes, gateways to the world of Beneath. Janet suspects her mother may be involved in the young woman's disappearance, as she will stop at nothing to find the key to open a vortex and escape from Beneath. Shortly after arriving in Magellan, Janet's mysterious ex-boyfriend Mick shows up in town, someone she hasn't seen in five years. Mick also possesses supernatural power, though Janet is unsure of what type of magical being he is, and he will tell her very little about himself. Janet knows that Mick can brandish fire without getting burned, and he is unaffected by her storm power. But what does he really want with her? Can she trust him to stand by her during the biggest battle of her life?

Wow! I've been waiting for this book's release since I read the prequel A Little Night Magic in the anthology Hot for the Holidays. It was well worth the wait. Stormwalker was a page-turner! It was an action-packed urban fantasy, sexy paranormal romance and mystery/suspense all in one story. The plot is full of twists and turns, and you're never quite sure who's on the side of good or evil. The author has created a cast of fascinating characters - from a trickster god that changes from man to coyote to a bi-sexual talking magic mirror! I loved the first-person perspective of Janet Begay. She is an engaging heroine who had me fighting, cringing, laughing and crying along with her. She's the first character in a long time who could rival Sookie Stackhouse! Any fan of urban fantasy or paranormal romance would enjoy this story.

Janet Begay is a Stormwalker, her mother is a Goddess from Beneath who possessed a human white female to act as a surrogate mother, her father is a Navajo who has strong Earth magic running through his family. Janet has magic from both her mother and her father making her a Stormwalker. She can call a storms power making it her own but sometimes the magic is too volatile for Janet and the only other person who can control Janet and her storm magic is Mick the dark haired blue eyed mysterious biker. Janet’s mother needs to harness her daughters power so that she can open up the Vortex between Beneath and Earth so that Janet’s mother can escape. However Janet is intent on putting a stop to her mother once and for all.I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book I had heard that it was a cross between UF and PNR. I can say having now read it I would class it as UF. I did struggle with the beginning of the book it didn’t grab me straight away but I think that was more to do with me than the book as I had just finished a fantastic read prior to this. But friends kept telling me to keep with it and I’m glad I did, it turned out to be an enjoyable read. I liked all of the characters in the story, Janet and Mick are the main ones and throughout half of the book we don’t know what the mysterious Mick is. I loved Maya the mouthy electrician and I would like to read more about her. There a few sex scenes n the book and thank goodness no mushy romantic dialogue. I thought there were quite a few holes in the story, like Janet suddenly having a piece of mirror in her pocket that saves her life. But if you ignore this and just accept such things for what they are it is ok. The plot isn’t great but it does provide for interesting events along the way. At some times I found myself not being able to put the book down whilst at other times my mind did wander. I did enjoy seeing Beneath and wished a bit more time had been spent there. All in all I would like to give this book 3 stars. It is worth reading but I wouldn’t be pushing it to the top of my tbr pile tomorrow either. Saying that I am interested enough to know more and will be reading the other books in the series at some point.

I really enjoyed Stormwalker, a fresh blend of characters and creatures that is interesting. Janet is likeable in that tough yet vulnerable way with an interesting power. Mick is something a little different and very appealing. The supporting characters have a lot of potential and add a lot to the story.I enjoyed James's sense of humor running throughout and also felt the action scenes were well handled. There is not a lot I don't like about Stormwalker and i am looking forward to the next installment

The characters: Janet, Mick, Coyote, and the cop Nash Jones The story:Janet Begay, a half Navajo Stormwalker, can call the power of any storm and manipulate it to her liking. The Navajo and Stormwalker side of her is from her father. Her mother, an evil Goddess in a place called the Beneath, wants Janet to join with her so they can rule the Beneath AND with their combined powers, take over the world.Janet not only has the physical struggles against the evil that has been unleashed by her mother but she also has to struggle internally with the insecurities of being only half Navajo and the daughter of an evil, power crazy Goddess. Adding to her internal struggles, Janet does not know whom to trust. There is Mick her on again off again, super hot boyfriend who performs disappearing acts at all the wrong moments. Then there is the sarcastic, witty Coyote God, appropriately named "Coyote", the town cop named Nash Jones who seems to have a vendetta against Janet or the super hilarious Magic Mirror with a wisecracking mouth that will make you laugh non-stop.Lost In The World:The descriptions of the hotel, the desert, the small diner, even the railroad tracks made the setting so realistic. The author does a great job of making the reader feel like you are there. Will I read the next book in the series? Not only will I read it, I'll probably pre-order it. I really liked the book and especially how strong minded but vulnerable Janet was. I loved the relationship between Janet and Mick. The book had all the elements I love, it was scary and surprising, it had romance (and hot sex) and it had paranormal elements that were perfectly woven into the story line making it seem so realistic.

I had a lot of fun reading Stormwalker. I normally don't pick up paranormal romances, because I'm not usually in the mood to read a lot of sex, but even though there was a few sex scenes in this book, I didn't find myself rolling my eyes, or thinking "oh gag" due to overly mushy or purple prose. Which is refreshing, because sometimes, even in an urban fantasy (which I would expect to have pure adventure with maybe a bit of sexual tension, not a lot) where you are dealing with kick-ass women, sometimes you get some very mushy, way too tender scenes that don't fit in (well, to me they don't fit in). I'm just over the that, if I want romance, I look for a romance book. ANYWAY - that's why I usually don't pick up a paranormal romance, but I have to say that this book didn't seem to follow that paranormal romance formula (THANK god). This is about Janet Begay - who is a stormwalker. She can pull power from storms and use the power as magic. She also has a bit of a problem - she has two types of power battling inside her. Her grandmother is a Navajo magic woman. Her mother a mysterious figure. She grew up on Navajo land, with her father's family feeling like an outcast (ME TOO! not a Navajo, but I felt different than the rest of my family) She has quite a past....and quite a boyfriend from the past that shows up. He is the only person that could "siphon off' her excess energy after using storm magic, and the only time she didn't feel a horrible hangover is when her boyfriend Mick used her excess energy. In this novel, Janet has come to a small town to look for a missing daughter of the police chief. She has also bought an old abandoned hotel and is trying to renovate it to keep busy and have a place to stay. While she is dealing with finding a person who has been missing for a year, and trying to renovate a motel she has to deal with some hostile people (the missing girl's fiancee, who also happens to be sheriff), a coyote trickster, a snarky magic mirror (I want one) and her own magic mother who is making her presence known.I enjoyed the narration and the dialogue of this novel. There's one electrician that's been hired that just hates Janet, and yet Janet tries to make friends with her in a snarky way. The sheriff is a by-the-book sheriff that harasses Janet as much as he can, within the law. Mick - her ex-boyfriend shows up and refuses to leave, because he wants to protect Janet and Janet can't seem to force the issue. All of this could have been a melodramatic mess, but Allyson James works it in such a way it seemed to work well together. There were also bits and pieces of Navajo customs that were interesting to read - tidbits about characters of Navajo people and some of the rituals. I would have liked to read more about that, but it might have turned into a textbook. There is a sequel (Firewalker) releasing in November, so hopefully there will continue to be bits and pieces of the Navajo culture woven into that book as well. The main character and a lot of the other characters were Navajo or Mexican, which reflects more accurately the world I live in - which is nice to have in books. I wished the cover model of the book looked more Navajo. She has the dark eyes, and looks like she might have olive toned skin, but it's hard to tell. There are lots of clouds and lightening and an odd tint to the woman, possibly depicting evening, but the woman is not obviously Navajo, other than the silver band on her bicep, or the turquoise jewelry at her neck, and the long hair, which with most Indian women who follow a lot of the old ways, would be a lot longer. But Janet is supposed to be a bit of a renegade. I know a few caucasion women of a certain age (50's) that all wear this type of jewelry - it was quite a fashion fad for awhile.Stormwalker was a nice blend of mystery, adventure, urban fantasy, a touch of romance and Navajo Lore. I enjoyed it because it never got gushy or mushy in spite of the paranormal romance tag. I enjoyed it enough to keep my eye out for the second book, Firewalker. There were some parts where Janet kicks the crap out people, times where she makes a stupid decision that comes back to her, but it was a fun read and the character acknowledges her mistakes. There's only one part that had me going..."come on!" and that 's when Janet finally finds out the big mystery of why Mick can handle her extreme magic, but that's just me - the book as a whole was fun to read.

Good, fast-paced paranormal romance/mystery. Reminds me a bit of Richelle Mead's Dark Swan series, but with fewer Faeries and more Coyote. Like many other series that can be labeled urban fantasy, Janet and Mick don't get their HEA in a single book-- their story will continue in Firewalker. A slight clarification on an earlier review-- this may be the first in the series, but it is actually the second work in this world (that I know of). The first, which focuses on Jamison and Naomi, was "A Little Night Magic" in the Hot For the Holidays anthology that came out late 2009.
