A lot of times, terrible things happen in books and the hero or heroine seems to cope with everything like it's no big deal. This second book in the trilogy takes a realistic view of the fallout from losing people you love in horrific ways. Rachel can be annoying at times in this book, but her grief and guilt ring very true.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty:Beautiful story with amazing characters, wonderful romance, and heart pounding adventure! There were a few times I lost a little interest in the story, but overall this was an amazing read!Opening Sentence:“What are you going to tell them?”The Review:With their home destroyed and nowhere else to go, the people of Baalboden decide to follow Logan and Rachel to a new home. They set out into the wilderness to travel to a neighboring city where they hope to find safety. But the dreaded commander has recruited an army and is in hot pursuit of their little group. He wants what Logan stole from him and he will stop at nothing to get it back. While racing across the wilderness the small group of survivors learns to fight and there is hope that maybe they will make it to safety, but then disaster strikes. There is a traitor among them that has started killing off people one by one. Logan and Rachel don’t know who they can trust and soon all the pressure starts to take a toll on them. Will their love be able to survive this new obstacle? Will they be able to protect the ones they love or will they have to watch more people they care about die?Rachel is racked with guilt from what she has done not only to the people she loves but also the people she has killed. I completely adored Rachel in the first book and sadly I felt a slight disconnect with her in this one. She is still a strong intelligent girl, but she lets her feeling of guilt and revenge drive her to make stupid decisions. I get that she is trying to deal with everything and it would be overwhelming, but I felt she takes things a little too far. She starts to push Logan away which made me mad, but it added the contention the story needed. But I am happy to say that by the end of the story, the Rachel I loved does make a reappearance and I am very hopeful that I will be able to fully reconnect with her again in the next book.Logan is as cute as ever, but he has lost some of the confidence that I loved about him so much. Becoming the leader of their small group was very stressful for him and he wasn’t quite ready for the responsibility that was thrown at him. I felt that even though he made a lot of mistakes he did the best that he could and that made me admire him even more. He is very charming and the way he treats Rachel is so sweet. I love that he is smart and driven yet full of compassion and courage. I also really enjoyed that we got to know a lot more about his background, it made his story make a lot more sense! Logan captured my heart in Defiance and my love for him just grew more in this book. This was a beautifully written story with non-stop action, adorable romance, and bitter betrayal. From the very first page you are thrown right back into the story and the pacing never seemed to falter. Even though this book had all these great elements, I still found myself losing interest at certain points in the book. I can’t really pinpoint exactly what it was that made me want to put the book down but there were a few times where I just didn’t feel like reading this book. Honestly, it may have been that I just wasn’t in the mood for a fantasy book or the fact that the book was rather depressing at times. Because of this it took me a very long time to get through this story, but once I picked it back up the final time, I finished it in one sitting. So with all that being said, I still really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the last book in the series! Redwine has amazing and captivating writing that is very fun to get lost in! I would highly recommend this series to anyone that is looking for a fantasy series with a dystopian type world!Notable Scene:Without waiting for a response, I walk away. Across the clearing. Through the eastern edge of camp and deep into the shadowy depths of the wasteland with its scrubby ferns and spongy moss, its reverent stillness and its well-kept secrets. I keep my head held high and my shoulders straight, though there’s no one left to see it. I won’t look weak and broken again. Not for Quinn. Not for anyone.FTC Advisory: Balzer + Bray/Harper Teen provided me with a copy of Deception. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

I'm not sure how long it's been since I read Defiance, but I couldn't really remember any of the details of the story. There were enough references splashed throughout this book to refresh my memory, but not overdo it. And though I struggled with the violence and Rachel's ways of dealing with her pain, I thought Deception did a really good job of not falling into the middle book slump; it was a story all its own. There were enough things resolved and enough new challenges presented toward the end to keep me invested.

I have to say a major THANK YOU to Ms. Redwine for not implementing a love triangle or even the appearance of one. When Logan sees something that upsets him and he, naturally, jumps to conclusions, he immediately confronts Quinn and he explains and everything is fine. Immediately. Ah, breath of fresh air. Not to mention my respect for both characters really soared with how they handled it.

I knew who the "traitor" was from the first- anytime main characters are keeping secrets from one another, it's a red flag. But I was surprised by the family histories.

I'm looking forward to the last book!

This is an awesome story! Fast-paced, laced with lots of action, I adored it!Plot: If you have not read Defiance, I strongly suggest you do. The story picks up right where the last book left off. Rachel is dealing with after math of the attack in Defiance. Lots of peoples are scared and asking lots of questions in which Rachel could only answer some. I really loved how each chapter build up nicely to the next big event. The plot moved with great pacing, allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves in this world. Even for me, as I read it, I didn’t realize I was half-way through the book till I got interrupted.Love: The love between Rachel and Logan grew fiercely strong. I adore how great of partners they make for each other. Though times are tough, these characters pulled through for each other day in and day out. They fought next to each other and stood by each other with every loss of friends/family members. This love is not only triumphant, but so amazing to feel.Ending: The building towards to end with lots of secrets being revealed really mess with my head. The ending left me hooked and wanting more. I could say more but I’m afraid I will ruin for you all. Just read the book. Believe me, its awesome.Deception is an excellent sequel to Defiance. The strength of the plot emerges with great characters and drama. Combine with a numerous amounts of elements, Deception will not leave you bored. A marvelous and fantastic tale, Deception delivers a savoring story.

I loved Defiance, so I was really excited to read Deception. There were so many things that made Defiance amazing and I was really hoping to see them in Deception: a swoon-worthy romance, a badass Logan (my only real book boyfriend), killer world building, and an amazing plot. While the swoon-worthy romance wasn’t really present in Deception, the rest of the elements were and I really enjoyed reading it.We meet two new characters towards the end of Defiance that end up playing a much larger role in Deception: Quinn and Willow. I ended up loving both of them, and that was really unexpected. Quinn is sweet and compassionate, but still fierce and smart. Willow is just a badass and a girl, and I love that she doesn’t care if people think she should be playing with dolls. As much as I loved the supporting characters, though, Logan and Rachel were one of the main reasons that I fell in love with this series. I still enjoyed reading about Logan and he is still both a brilliant scientist and a certified badass, but Rachel was a little to ... vengeful ... this time around. She was very single minded in her quest to destroy the commander, but considering all the trauma she endured, it was understandable. However, as much as I like Logan and Rachel as characters, what I really like is them as a couple. They didn’t feel like a couple at all this time around though. We hardly saw them together and when we did, there wasn’t really anything romantic about it. I could’ve been reading more about friends than soul mates.Even though I was a bit disappointed with Rachel, and her relationship with Logan, the world building and plot were still amazing. The descriptions of the world after the creature had terrorized the United States and the people’s descriptions of the “old world” were fascinating. I also enjoyed learning about the other city states, their different cultures, and how they interact with each other. Even though I missed having a strong love story between Logan and Rachel, the plot and world building more than make up for it. Additionally, we have several supporting characters add that a lot to the book and make you fall in love with it a little more. The story is just excellent and I am really looking forward to the next book.

I loved this follow up to Defiance and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I loved being back with Rachel and Logan and loved them both as much as I remembered from Defiance. Deception is full of action, emotions, small steamy scenes, healing, friendship, betrayal, secrets and fighting against all odds. This is in no way a filler book, and I loved every second. Revenge is a big theme in this one, and we see how it drives so many of the survivors. They all have lost people and their homes, and while continued survival and freedom are their biggest motivators, you can also see how revenge helps them to move on. But we all see how it can debilitate and add to the burdens already heavy on their shoulders when they don't funnel it properly. The same with grief. Especially through Rachel in this one. Her nightmares are chasing her into the daytime, and all of the things that she has done and regretted are piling on her shoulders and she is only stuffing it down and not dealing with it. We get to see her breaking and it was so hard to watch. Her source of comfort and her way out of the grief and guilt comes from someone that I didn't quite expect it from, but I loved it and painted such a beautiful picture of friendship and of support. It was awesome to watch Logan grow into a leader and really take on the responsibility for the survivors. He is so thoughtful and thinks through everything. He takes seriously that the survivors chose him as their leader and I don't think they could have chosen a more smart and capable and driven person. I also loved the moments with him and Rachel. To see how in love they were, and how they supported each other. They both have so many responsibilities and try to protect the other. It is awesome and leaning on each other is how they get through it all. Quinn and Willow are by far my favorite secondary characters. They bring so much depth to the story. Their rich back story, their sibling love and protectiveness, how devoted they are to Rachel and Logan, and the knowledge and power they bring with their friendship and alliance. I lived for each moment where they stole the scene with their fierceness or loyalty, as well as learning about their past even when it is so dark. And wow at the twists in the plot. Oh my goodness, I didn't see some of them coming, and some of the things that took place showed such sacrifice, brought such pain, and others just made my eyes bug out because I never considered it a possibility. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series and find out what happens next. Bottom Line: Amazing story from first page to last.

Well done. Good progress with the storyline but also packed with adventure, suspense, and good vs evil. We see Logan stepped up as a young, 19 year old leader out of desperation but also necessity to lead his people. He really grew into his responsibility and appointed position, not just as a leader, but as a leader his people respected and looked up to for direction. My only gripe would be Logan and Rachel's back-and-forth on how they, themselves, could sacrifice their own life for the good of the "war" but were ridiculous about the utter safety of the other. Yes, you love them...and yes, love them more. Pot meet kettle. The trip through the Wastelands took up the majority of the story. I felt the trip went on for just a bit too long when the reader finally gets to the quick but attention grabbing twist toward the end. Logan's backstory and also character death at the end (sniff, sniff) painted a believable but real element(s). Sacrifice, loss, determination, and loyalty were strong elements to the end.Overall, a well-done middle book in this series...but how I loathe cliffhangers. At least book three is already out. No waiting. Woot.***2013I thoroughly enjoyed book #1. Post-apocalyptic, dystopian, fantasy, and romance. How is that not a fun read? And there are pseudo-dragons. Everything is better with dragons. Waiting (not so) patiently for Deception.
