About this audiobook

A hilarious and dazzling debut novel about a master impressionist at risk of losing his true self All his life Giovanni Bernini has possessed an unhealthy gift: he can imitate anyone he meets. Honed by his mother at a young age, the talent catapults him from small-town obscurity to stardom. As Giovanni describes it, quot;No one's disguise is perfect. There is in every person, no matter how graceful, a seam, a thread curling out of them ... When pulled by the right hands, it will unravel the person entire.quot; As his fame grows, Giovanni encounters a beautiful and enigmatic stage signer Lucy Starlight - the only person whose thread he cannot find - and becomes increasingly trapped inside his many poses. Ultimately, he must assume the one identity he has never been able to master: his own.#160;

    With quick pacing and a cast of unusual characters, this story starts off choppy and doesn't get better. From the setting to the characters to the plot, everything feels shallowly developed. The writing style and characters are so eccentric that I was never quite sure what was to be taken seriously. Character interactions were especially hard to buy.

    I found some parts entertaining (like the lobster scene), and at times it almost reminded me of a Coen brothers movie (I could see John Goodman playing Max), but ultimately I was left feeling underwhelmed and confused.

    I received an uncorrected proof of The Poser, so changes may have been made to this book since publication.The Poser centers on Giovanni Bernini, a boy from a seaside town with a talent for impersonation. He doesn’t perform caricatures of people, but has found a way to become them, with the pull of their ‘thread.’ His talent brings him both fame and misfortune, and the book chronicles this in sections, each named after the man that affected him most during that specific time.While The Poser does not make it to my favorites’ list, I really enjoyed the premise. In writing about impressions, Rubin gave a lot of detail about the characters. It made it really easy to fully imagine the supporting cast in my head. However (though this was probably intentional) I was never able to fully envision what Giovanni looked like. I was always imagining the story simply through his eyes, without ever seeing him.I liked the final section, Orphels, the most. I felt like I got to know more about a character who is constantly impersonating other characters. I would be interested to see what changes, if any, were made between the uncorrected proof and the final published copy.

    fiction. reviewed from uncorrected galley.
    The three parts of this story felt uneven--maybe the writing part could be better woven in throughout?
