About this audiobook
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same.
Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.
As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Aided by his skeptical neighbor, Lila, Joe throws himself into uncovering the truth. Thread by thread, he begins to unravel the tapestry of Carl's conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before it's too late to escape the fallout?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Life We Bury was a well written book. It was less of a mystery, more thriller/suspense. I guessed the ending fairly early on and found myself just cheering for the characters to figure it out. Not in a hurry up already way, but a genuine caring for the characters. They were all three dimensional and quite enthralling. Even Jeremy, the autistic brother was well rounded and extremely well rounded out.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was okay. Joe’s family-related frustrations were plentiful and drove me nuts.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The first third or so of this novel was serious fiction done very well. Then the action took over, and I found myself wondering if I’d been wrong. I think not, though; I think the author had an editorial change of heart and settled on a more popular genre. Probably done better than most, but not nearly as interesting to me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Best book I’ve read in a long time I couldn’t put it down.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Not bad. One of those real life books with autistic brother and other real life difficulties not found in thrillers, but also with lots of action if unlikely, and some feeling.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's definitely entertaining and a good listen for those long car rides. Nothing too gnarly or bloody, just a simple thriller with a good plot.
