Now that Rudi's dead his daughter has the Sword, the killer was a Korean version of the CUT, who was hunting the Japanese princess to prevent her from travelling to Los Angelas to get her version of the Sword. This episode is a bit slower than normal because of the need to introduce the new characters, meld them with the old and establish a new Quest. Of course there is enough violence to establish the validity of the bad guys/good guys and to compare the basic American fighting style against the Japanese samurais. Now we're ready for the Asian war against the "powers of chaos".

Peace finally reigns, after the CUT are defeated. New allies and enemies appear; it is time for new leadership to pick up the sword.

The Golden PrincessThis is the opening novel in a new series in the Emberverse. It segues perfectly with the last part of the last series. The fated king Artos is dead, slain by treachery after the introduction of new nations [Japan and Korea] and the return of ancient evil thought dead with the smashing of the Cutters. Plus there is an Australian chapter that hints at even vaster doings afoot. Yes, there are survivor states in Oz beyond Tasmania and through them a sea road to an East Indian and Indian Ocean trade network. The demonic danger has returned in new forms. A new generation must make a quest to recover a magic sword in a place that cannot, that should not exist, but apparently does. We have a new generation of heroes to undertake the venture as such quests are a province of the young. Two princesses newly come to power, but not fully invested therein, lead a cast of characters done with the loving detail that Stirling is known for. For readers of the prior series there is enough new detail as this baroquely strange society continues to evolve. As an example there is a cameo appearance of a wounded veteran of Horse Heaven Hills to remind readers of continuity without a data dump. For people newly come to the world, you really need nothing from the prior books to get vast enjoyment out of this one. There are some excellent action scenes but in the main the party is being assembled and launched upon a quest that only ends in glory or death. This is sword and sorcery the way it should have always been, a delicious mix of nostalgia and wonder.
