Katie Macalister

Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie MacAlister spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. When she was contracted to write a nonfiction book about software, her editor refused to allow her to include witty dialogue or love scenes, so Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, in which she could indulge in world building, tormenting her characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and are regulars on the New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell. Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest. You can visit her website at KatieMacAlister.com.

Although this story is one among many in my favorite casual reading genre, which is urban fantasy (typically narrated by a woman in first person POV), I was pleasantly surprised by the originality of many aspects of the story and the characters. I've already bought the second book in the series.

Dragons. Demons in the form of big, slobbery, talking dogs. A handsome man insisting she's his eternal mate. People thinking she's something magical and powerful called a Guardian. And Aisling Grey, completely baffled by all of this.

This is typical Katie MacAlister: humor, found family, great characters.

Just what I needed, a light funny story with sexual tension. Love the Dragon, yahoo, what a cutie ! The demons and witches are great characters, laughable side kicks. The snotty French ? Maybe not, LOL ! I love Ashling Grey, fantastic, can't wait to read the next book, Bravo Katie MacAlister !
If you are looking for something light, quick, funny, with attractive men and a great story line, this is the book to read.

YOU SLAY ME, by Katie MacAlister, is an hysterically funny paranormal romance. Its been four years since I read a paranormal romance, as they are really not my style, but this one was highly recommended to me and I'm glad I took the bait!
The story centers on Aisling Grey, who, at 31, is just discovering that she is a "guardian" (a keeper of the gates to Hell) while on a job-related trip to Paris. Aisling discovers the murdered body of the customer she was supposed to deliver a package to, amid some occult symbols drawn on the floor. As she is mistakenly suspected of the murder, she takes it upon herself to uncover the real killer, and mayhem ensues, especially since she doesn't know much about the differences between the powers of demons, demon lords, dragons, wiccans, sexy wyverns, and venedigers. In her case, a little knowledge IS dangerous! Along the way she gets intimately involved with Drake Vireo, a seductively attractive dragon in human form, who also becomes a murder suspect.
Aisling's sidekick, Jim, a demon she naively conjured up in the form of a talking dog, provides just as much humor as Aisling herself. Their adventures together through the streets of Paris are great fun.
YOU SLAY ME would make a great addition to the libraries of paranormal romance fans.
I really enjoyed this light-hearted book as a diversion from my normally more serious reading, and recommend it highly for that reason.

A paranormal book that is part of a series with the same heroine so romance had a way back seat but Jim was so funny it upped my rating to 3.5* Courier Aisling is delivering a dragon statue to Paris and meets Drake, a real-life dragon, in his human form.

OK, yes, this is a formula we all know: there's a gateway to hell, a bad bad person on the loose, a bewildered yet eminently capable heroine, and a forbidding yet mouth-wateringly delicious supernatural hero.

But it's so good! It really is! Aisling Grey is great, full of foolhardy courage, totally able to take care of herself and yet not embarassed to ask for help, delightfully vulnerable to the charms of Drake Vireo while at the same time delightfully in control of herself.

And Drake Vireo? Oh, he is fabulous. He is one of the most convincing half-human half-animal characters I have ever read. It's not a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing; he is both human and dragon at the same time (vs. for example, stories about werewolves where there are only whiffs of beastliness intruding into the werewolf's human persona, or the human and wolf parts of the werewolf's nature are at odds, seemingly separate and making the werewolf a little schizophrenic).

And I have to say, the thing where Drake recognizes Aisling as his mate & it's fated and eternal and also super hot - but he doesn't necessarily like her, and Aisling doesn't necessarily want to attach herself to him - when done right, this is a very satisfying plotline. And it is done very well here.

Oh - and - can I just say that the incorporation of Paris and of French was for done well? For every twenty books I read that involve random slinging about of French phrases maybe one will get it right, and Katie MacAlister has had at least one good semester abroad in Paris. Goodness, I love those crazy idiomatic phrases and almost a whole chapter is set in the sewer museum! So if you are Paris-nostalgic or happen to speak French, you will be tickled rather than tortured.

My only objection? I figured out who the villain was at least a hundred pages before Aisling. Then I was frustrated with her for not figuring it out.

Aisling Grey had a lot of bad luck in her life. After her divorce, somehow she has to pay the alimony to her ex-husband. It does not unfortunately mean that she is filthy rich. Quite contrary she has to suck-up-to her uncle and work for him as a courier, just to make the ends meet. She gets her first big assignment - delivering golden medieval dragon statue to client in Paris, but... (and trust me when Aisling is concerned there will be a lot of buts...) Client is dead. Gorgeous hunk with green eyes steals the statue from her. She is accused for murder. And then things really start to get worse.
Aisling is my favorite type of heroine. She is confident. She does not freak out or panic, although she will meet dragons, evil mages, wiccans, demons and other things she did not even dream that exist. She always has some brilliant idea how to solve problems. And it so fun reading how her ideas back-fire. :)

What a fun book...I love how she kind of fumbles through and still kicks hiney!!

Frustrating read. I like the world and the secondary characters, but I hated the heroine and did not enjoy continually watching her make a complete ass of herself.

That sort of thing can be funny, a la the Pink Panther movies, but it requires the author to stick to it. I can't be expected to point and laugh at the boob at one point and then take her seriously at another. I think the first person narrative was also inappropriate. If I'm supposed to connect with her, don't make her an utter fool. Rather than laugh with her, I was cringing and skimming ahead.

Also, for something billed as "paranormal romance," it lacked romance. Aisling scarcely interacts with Drake in the book. There's no connection between them beyond the lazy Fated Mate trope.

Cute book, with steamy sex. Follows the basic formula for most Romances, but fun to read (or listen to in my case). Also the characters are great, some of the lines had me laughing out loud. I love Jim (the demon), I not sure if he comes off as lovable when reading, but the narrator of the audio book gave him such a cute voice...and who doesn't love Newfoundlands. I will definitely continue the series.

I am not a big fan of dumb, babbling heroines so this book was a little hard for me to get through. It also was not as funny as I expected it to be. Yes, there were some funny moments but those mostly came from the demon dog and not from Aisling. I didn’t like Aisling that much, yes, I know she didn’t know she was a Guardian and has a lot to learn but does she have to start out dumb as a box of rocks? Ok maybe I’m being too hard on her but she just annoyed me.There were some things I enjoyed about this book and the biggest one being Jim the demon dog he was the best part of this book. Wait maybe he is the only thing I liked about this book.Anyway, I won’t be running out to get the second book in this series, this book was just meh.

Meet Aisling Grey, she is new at being a courier, in fact this is her first trip to France. Arriving at Aurora Deauxville’s residence to deliver the item, Aisling was shocked to find that the woman was dead and suddenly Aisling was the prime suspect in her murder. Meet Drake Vireo, he portrayed himself as an Interpol detective, but that was not the case, he was actually a green dragon and a wyvern to top it all off. Discovering that she was also a Guardian, even if she didn’t know what that all entailed, she found a way of summoning a demon of her own to help her figure out who the real murderer was. Meet Efrrijim, Jim is a demon that had no master until Aisling summoned him, now he is in this world in the form of a Newfoundland dog and a strange sense of humor about his novice demon lord. With suspicion on both Aisling and Drake, the death of the venediger (a powerful mage) leads to Aisling making some unusual decisions. All while fighting the bond of being a wyverns mate.Book 1 ….. What a fun look at the otherworld. Between the dragons, the mages, the demons and the wiccans, the stereo-typical personalities of each seem to show through. While the French lesson was kind of funny, the catchy part was the relationship between Aisling, Drake and Jim. Naive as she was, she was able to stumble through it all. The humor definitely carried the story, the romance is abrupt and short and the mystery jumps around leading you in many different directions. In the end, it was a great distraction from everyday life, but it is not the greatest book I have read, fast and fun is good enough for me. Next up (Fire Me Up), I hope this one will be a light and funny.

This is the first book in the Aisling Grey, Guardian series by Katie MacAlister. This is the first book I have read by MacAlister. The book ended up being exactly what I though it would be. It is a cute, funny and sexy little book that was a quick read.Aisling is on a job as a courier delivering a golden dragon statue to someone in Paris. Only thing is when she shows up to make the delivery the recipient is deceased. To make matters more complicated someone else is on the scene with Aisling, his name is Drake and he is convinced that Aisling is a Guardian. This book is fun little romp. It is more of a romance than most of the paranormals that I read, but it was a quirky little book that I found myself enjoying as I read it. There is some sex in the book but I thought it was tastefully done and not too drawn out. Aisling isn't the normal type of heroine I am drawn to; she is a self admittedly dense and a little bit flighty. Drake is an overpowering male, with about as much sensitivity as a slab of concrete. Still I found these books to be amusing. I also liked the way the magical community was set up in Paris. I find the structure of the dragon culture and the inclusion of dragons as an immortal race to be interesting. The position of Guardian is also interesting and I hope in the next book we find out more about exactly what a Guardian does.If I had to compare this book to other series I have read I would say that it has a bit more substance and a less flighty heroine than the Queen Betsy series by Davidson but it is more flighty and less substantial than the Sookie Stackhouse series by Harris. Hopefully that will give you an idea of what type of book this is.I think this series is a bit of a jealous pleasure, it is pure candy, but it hooked me and I enjoyed it all the same. I am excited to read the next book!

I've read several Kate MacAlister books and have come to the conclusion that I don't need to read any more. I just don't get her humour, I don't find the situations or one liners funny. This was better than others that I've read but still not enough to sustain a complete book for me and I found my attention wandering. Then I started to skim. Aisling Grey wanders into a French murder scene with minimal understanding and seems to find the entire French poplulation well versed in dragon/demon lore. It's part of the joke that everyone accepts the supernatural is real but its not funny enough to hold the book for me. She also meets a powerful wyvern dragon, Drake, who kisses her an steals her artifact and the rest of the books she sort of stumbles around chasing him/it and facing the consiquences. The mystery is both silly and not that mysterious and the characters grate on me. No more dragons from Ms MacAlister for me!

Very cute, although I think that my favorite character was Jim, the demon/dog, and not the main character. Aisling finds out that she is something called a guardian, but has no idea what that is. Throughout the book, she gathers other titles, really without a clue what they mean. By the end, she is a guardian, wyvern-mate, venediger, and still trying to be a courier for her uncle's business. A good introduction to the series, but I am not sure that it grabbed my attention enough for me to read the rest of the series.

"You Slay Me" is the first book I have read by Katie MacAlister. I don't want to sound overly enthusiastic about singing this book's praises, because often the first book of a series stands out as being original and charming and the following feel like a letdown. (Kerryln Sparks "How to Marry A Millionaire Vampire" comes to mind) However this story grabbed me after the first five or six pages and didn't slow down. Ailsing Grey is innocently trying to deliver a courier package when she stumbles upon a murder which may have been caused by a demon summoning. As she finds herself immersed more and more deeply into the mystical, magical world she is visiting, I became more and more enraptured with the story. This book is non stop action. There were several good laugh aloud moments (a la early MJD "Queen Betsy") and Aisling never failed to be a fun and good hearted, if ditzy, character. The paranormal male leads tend to bore me. I think authors have a difficult time making them stand out from all the others, but dragon wyvern Drake Vireo holds his own. MacAlister does a good job keeping him from being too nice. I recently read a book where the main character's dog talks. It was horribly annoying and took stars off of its rating. Here Aisling summons a low grade demon in the form of a dog named Jim and he is a hoot! I loved Jim so much. The interaction between Aisling and Jim provides some of the story's best comical moments. The only frusterating part for me is the same as other's have mentioned. I wanted to know more about what it meant for Aisling to be a Guardian and we only found out little snippets of information. I think this series is going to be a unique and fun treat and I look forward to reading the others in this series. "You Slay Me" far surpassed my expectations.

Like a lot of this author's works, this is a silly book. The men are alpha and dominering, the women are just silly and at worse stupid.
The book was a quick read, and I had forgotten how much I like the demons in these sorts of books. The dragons ar great but again the lead character has me getting annoyed with her.
Better than most MAcAlister books but there are better similar novels

Fairly brisk narrative. The sex scene comes too early. The wonder of the paranormal is diluted when within pages of the beginning we are introduced to a whole society of paranormal creatures with little interaction with normal society.

Katie MacAlister is the ruler by which I judge all romantic fiction. Her heroines are real with flaws and her heroes are too hot for words. In You Slay Me, we meet Aisling Grey (Ashling) who is desperately trying not to lose her job as a courier. But murder, magic, and a sizzling hot Drake Vireo keeping thwarting Aisling in her attempts to deliver a priceless antique. With the French police after her and a cranky demon in tow, Aisling discovers that dragons really are HOT!

A good read, different from her vampire series though. I'm still not sure whether or not I like Aisling's character all that much though, she's a bit of a dunce at times, and the stupid-ness of her actions aggravated me sometimes. I tend to prefer a strong female like Anita Blake, to these ditzy ones, but that's just my preference. Most likely it doesn't bug others as much as it does me. And Katie's characters always seem to be somewhat ditzy in most of her books anyway, yet I still read them so there's obviously something I like that makes me overlook the annoying-ness of her character. I do have the 2nd in this series, Fire Me Up, which I plan to read shortly... hopefully Aisling has gotten a hold on some of her powers then and can learn to listen with her full mind instead of just what she can see right in front of her.

Aisling Grey is in France undertaking her first job as a courier for her uncle, delivering the aquamanile dragon statue. Unfortunately the job doesn't turn out so well when she finds the intended receipient murdered and hanging from the ceiling of her home in an apparent demon raising ritual sacrifice. In addition to the murder victim Aisling also encounters Drake Vireo, a sexy stranger who claims he is an agent of Interpol investigating the murder. However, when Drake steals the aquamanile and flees the scene just as the police arrive Aisling becomes suspicious he's not telling the entire truth. And, when Aisling becomes the prime suspect of the murder and has her passport and papers taken away she decides the best course of action is to find Drake and the real murderer (who she suspects may be one and the same). This course of action leads her to discover a sect of Otherworld creatures of France and to discover her own place within it.You Slay Me is the first book in the ongoing Aisling Grey Guardian Novels. I felt this book was written more like the Betsy, Queen of the Vampire series by MaryJanice Davidson than Katie MacAlister's own vampire series, but I enjoyed it much more. This is the first time I've read a story which is clearly the first in a single character driven romance series where I've been inspired to move on to the next story. I'm curious to see what new trouble Aisling and her dog/demon, Jim, will get into and doubly curious to see if her wyvern mate can actually turn back to his dragon form which will hopefully be revealed in her successive novels.

Slow start but get's hot, hot, hot, quick, quick, quick. Aislin (pronounced Ash-ling) Gray is a bit of a screw up with a lot of luck on her side. She finds out she is a Guardian, I'm still not quite sure what that is, something about guarding entrances to hell, but liked the book enough to forge on to the next title: Fire Me Up!
